DEAR PAW’S CORNER:My Pom/Pekingese mix,“Debbie,” really scratchesand bites at her fur a lot, butwhen I inspect her, there areno fleas that I can see — noreven the flea “dust” you de-scribed in a previous column.I bathe her regularly, but itdoesn’t seem to help. Myhusband thinks she scratch-es just to spite us. Do youhave a solution? — DottieK., Irving, N.Y.

DEAR DOTTIE: Debbie’snot scratching to “spite” you;she’s scratching because sheitches. The cause of her itchdoesn’t have to be fleas. Shemay have allergies or dryskin.

Scratching and biting atareas that are bothering hercan make the problemworse, not better, especiallyin the case of dry skin (oreven a skin disease that’s de-veloping, unseen).

The first thing I wouldrecommend is to stopbathing her so frequently, atleast for a while. When youdo bathe her, use a bath soapspecifically made for dogs, and ideally for dogs withsensitive skin. The soap

should be unscented — per-fumes can cause all sorts ofmisery for a dog with dryskin.

You also should take Deb-bie to the veterinarian andhave her checked out notjust for fleas, but any possi-ble allergic reaction, dry skinor skin disease.

Foods can be a culprit inskin problems caused by al-

lergies. It’s sometimes hardto pinpoint exactly whichfood is causing Debbie’sproblem, but your vet canprovide information on howto narrow down the possibil-ities so you can adjust herdiet accordingly.

Page 6: Curry Coastal Pilot Dec 4 2010 B Section

Last year during Advent, abad thing happened to myfamily. I think I can talk aboutit now. For a year I shoved itinto a dark hole and refusedto look at it, because it hurtlike dull knives.

I had saved the requisiteseveral hundred dollars forChristmas shopping over a pe-riod of months — quite a featon our income — and we wereon our way, a rare trip withthe whole family, to Portlandwhere we would stayovernight, visit with relativesand shop for the perfectChristmas gifts.

Somehow, even though Inever carry my purse, I endedup leaving it in a gas stationrestroom along the Interstate5.

There is no happy endingto this story. The money wasnever recovered and I spentthe bedraggled, broken tripback home weeping like an in-

sane woman in the back seatof the mini-van. I have rarelybeen so angry at myself.

There is however a very joy-ful ending to this story. Atsome point my middle daugh-ter, Gemma said, “Mom, whathave you always said Christ-mas is all about?” She wasright, but it was so hard rightthen to accept.

Readers of this column willrecall that I usually write ananti-materialism rant aboutthis time of the year. Well, thisis all very fine to espousewhen the means to materialgoods are there. Having it allcompletely and irrevocably

stripped away put us to thetest, and my beloved childrenand husband scored muchhigher than I.

God eternal, all-powerful,all-knowing, all-present, purelove, immeasurable in allquantities, chose to become acompletely helpless infant, shivering on a bed of straw be-cause somehow His becominglike me would raise me up tohim, and I find it rather stun-ning that someone who be-lieves this could even blinkwhen the packages are takenaway. No wonder we Chris-tians have trouble convincingthe atheists.

St. Augustine said of God,“My heart is restless until itrests in you.” When our hap-piness is connected to things,we will forever be aching forsomething more.

Joy is different from hap-piness. Joy is knowing thatGod is in love with the humanrace. It does not depend onhaving lots of things, or moneyor power or friends or health. It depends on knowing whoyou are in God’s eyes — eter-nally important, just little you.

There is no true joy outsideof knowing God. Many peoplewant to know God on theirown terms — God you aregreat, but stay over thereplease, or God you are greatbut gimme the goodies now.

My youngest remarked ran-domly one day, “I wish I couldbe a fish eaten by God.” Shegets it. This intense desire forGod, to be completely con-sumed by God, is written onevery person’s heart. To fillthat God shaped hole withanything but a pure abandon-ment to the love of God, is tobe forever — wanting.

The program this year willinclude some old favorites, like “Silent Night” and “OHoly Night” as well as somenew numbers, like a jazzyversion of “Snowfall.”

“If our music can spark amemory, then we haveachieved part of our mission. What I really would like to

Fern Hannaford recentlycelebrated her 100th birth-day at the Ashland home ofher daughter and son-in-law,Signa and Jay Fischer.

The Fischers, whom Han-naford has lived with for thelast 10 years, recently movedfrom Harbor to Ashland.Twenty-four friends and fam-ily members, including herother daughter, Betty Flickof Cosmopolis, Wash., cele-brated the milestone.

Hannaford had threebirthday cakes: a chocolatecake with raspberry fillingand cream cheese frostingfrom the Fischers; her fa-vorite Kentucky bourbonfruitcake from granddaugh-ter Sharon Kanna of Brook-ings, and a deluxe chocolatecake from another grand-daughter, Dina Riepe of PortTownsend, Wash.

Hannaford was born Nov.19, 1910, in Medford andlived most of her childhoodin Reece Creek. When shewas 19, she married a Navyman, Ed Hannaford, in Med-

ford and subsequently livedmany places, includingWashington, Texas, Virginiaand China. But she livedmost of her life in Washing-ton and Oregon. She and Edlater divorced and she neverremarried.

When she was 25, she andher 1-year-old daughterSigna (Fischer) took a slowboat to China to be with herhusband who was stationedin Shanghai. Fischer saidwhen the Japanese attackedShanghai in 1937, they werekilling all the civilians.

“All the U.S. dependentswere evacuated out of thereonto Navy ships. Two miser-able weeks on the ship I wasseasick. I was 3; I rememberit very well,” Fischer said.

Hannaford said they werea little ways from Shanghaiso she wasn’t afraid. “But wewere glad to be getting outof there, I’ll tell you that.”

One thing Hannaford re-members vividly happenedafter the dependents hadbeen sent to a town up thecoast before they wereshipped out.

“There was bombing allover,” she said, “and I lookedup and saw this bomb, andit was just floating down, and then there was this bigeruption. There was no noiseat all, it was so far away.

“Next thing we knew, wewere on our way to good ole’America,” she said.

When asked how it felt toreach American soil, Han-naford said, “Wonderful! Ab-solutely. Best part of my life.”

She held several differentjobs over the years, but herfavorite was working as acook in a hospital in Shelton,Wash., for about 25 years, until she retired at 73.

Her family agrees she’s awonderful cook. She remem-bers making everything fromscratch: no instant mashedpotatoes, no frozen breadedfish, no canned pie filling.

She recalled the time sheknew a doctor who loved herpeanut butter pies, and howshe made one just for him.

“He and the women whoworked with him came downto the kitchen to thank mefor that, and he kissed meon the cheek,” Hannafordsaid.

Hannaford loved to knit, and made many afghans forfamily members and vestsfor her granddaughter,Sharon Kanna.

“It was a nice thing to do,just sit and knit away,” Han-naford said. She also madecolorful wool braided rugs.Kanna said she still uses oneher grandmother madeabout 40 years ago.

Hannaford’s favorite, among the many inventionsthat came into being duringher lifetime, is the car.

“They’re absolutely unbe-lievable — what a changefrom a horse and a buggyand a wagon,” she said. “Werode horses to school, andhere they have buses to pick

children up for school.”She remembered an inci-

dent from her childhoodwhen she and her olderbrother, Merle, rode theirhorse to school.

“The horse bucked mybrother and me off,” she said.“The horse came home alone;my dad came looking for us.”

She recalled the first carowned by her father, WilberJack, a 1920 Ford.

“When you needed to turnon the windshield wiper, youhad to do it yourself (manu-ally).”

When asked what shethinks about living to 100,she said,

“I’m just amazed, that’show I feel. I can’t imagine itreally happened. I certainlynever wanted to live to be100. Hah! 100 years old!”

She has no idea what shedid to live that long. But hergranddaughter, SharonKanna, said she eats prettywell.

“Until recently,” Kannasaid, “she cooked her ownoatmeal, and she eats it mostevery morning. She eats cot-tage cheese, prunes andother fruit. She faithfullysprinkles flax seed on herfood.”

Also, Kanna added, theFischers (Kanna’s parents)have taken good care of Han-naford the last 10 years.

“And my dad,” she said,“does the cooking and makeswonderful meals for them,”Kanna said. “He’s a greatcook, so my grandma’s verylucky to live there.”

“And until very recently, grandma walked regularlyup and down their long drivein Harbor with her walker. And she’d stand by her bedand jog in place,” Kannasaid.

“Everybody who meets hersays she’s an amazingwoman, both physically andmentally.”

Hannaford is a voraciousreader and always has afresh stack of books next toher chair. She also doescrossword puzzles and wordsearches.

“She loves clam chowderand was always on a questfor the best clam chowder intown,” Kanna said. “I tookher to many restaurants onthat quest. She liked Smug-gler’s Cove’s. She was alsofond of The Hungry Clam’s,so my mom would pick herup some and bring it homefor her to enjoy.”

She loved living on theocean in Harbor. Her largebedroom window gave her aspectacular ocean view,Kanna said.

Hannaford said, “It nevergot too cold or too hot — itwas just an ideal place inevery way...

“I sure had a nice timewhen my family came downon my birthday,” Hannafordsaid. “It was so nice to seeeverybody. Some relatives Ihaven’t seen for ages, so itwas a real treat.”
