the development and effectiveness of modules associated with the National Science Foundation (NSF) Transforming
Undergraduate Education in Science (TUES) Phase 2 project “Improved Learning for Undergraduate Engineering
Programs Using Finite Element Learning Modules” funded for three years (Ash Brown, PI). This project built on
the Course Curriculum & Laboratory Improvement, CCLI, project originally directed by Professor Brown.

August 1998 – May 2000. Statistical Consultant: Analyzed assessment data collected for the Alternative Education
Program Division to gauge student learning and inform instructional practice. Data were collected two times each
year in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics performance. Analyses focused on investigating differences
between groups based on several factors including: (a) length of time in the program, (b) residence, i.e., the student's
original school district, (c) site, (d) grade level, (e) age, (f) gender, and (g) ethnicity. An item analysis of the
mathematics multiple choice exam highlighted curricular strengths and weaknesses.
CALIFORNIA PHARMACISTS ASSOCIATION SACRAMENTO, CA
June 1999 – April 2000. Statistical Consultant: Developed a survey for use with licensed pharmacists in California
to determine their continuing education needs and preferences. Analysis will be used to inform the CPhA as it plans
its continuing education program offerings.

CURRICULUM MATERIALS DEVELOPED
As a post-doctoral fellow at Vanderbilt University’s Learning Technology Center I worked on a team funded by the
National Science Foundation to develop curriculum materials to promote useful assessment practices in middle
school mathematics classrooms. The “SMART” programs (Special Multimedia Arenas for Refining Thinking)
serve to complement episodes in the “Jasper Woodbury Problem Solving Series in Mathematics” produced by the
LTC and distributed through Lawrence Erlbaum Associates. Further information can be found in the publication by
