Isabel Garcia, D.D.S., M.P.H., Co-Chair

Nick Place, Ph.D., Co-chair

Dean of Veterinary Medicine Search Committee

University of Florida

Gainesville, FL 32611

Dear Dr. Garcia, Dr. Place, and Search Committee Members:

Please accept this letter and the attached curriculum vitae as an application for the position of

Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at The University of Florida. I hope I can offer the

benefit of a broad range of relevant experiences, and that I have the characteristics you seek in a

new dean.

Currently, I have a job that I love, and I am dedicated to my college and the wonderful people

who inhabit it. When I heard of the dean position at the University of Florida, however, I could

not ignore it. Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine is clearly a World-class organization

moving towards even better and brighter things. With its broad research expertise, innovative

teaching programs, and legendary clinical services, I consider your College to be one of the very

best. The aspects of the college that are so compelling to me are the amazing faculty, the history

of research success in areas that are crucial to the future of the planet, the collaborations within

the UF Health system umbrella that lend themselves so well to translational medicine and One

Health, the rich clinical caseload, and the innovative DVM curriculum. I honestly, cannot think

of a college I would be more proud to support as its dean.

Although I do not really like talking about myself, please let me tell you a few things that will

help you get to know me a little better. I am an administrator and academician with considerable

experience in teaching, research, clinical service, business development, budget management,

programmatic and strategic planning, curriculum development, public outreach, public-private

partnerships, fund-raising, legislative lobbying, and faculty leadership. As the Dean of

Midwestern University’s new College of Veterinary Medicine, I have learned a lot about building

a team of diverse and talented faculty and staff that are capable of extraordinary

accomplishments. Getting a new college up and running, complete with teaching hospitals and

clinics, obtaining full accreditation, and producing proficient, day-one-ready graduates has been

the opportunity of a lifetime.

Below are some of the highlights of my academic career to date:

I have a track record of funded research productivity that has been collaborative and relevant,

and has given me the opportunity to help train numerous graduate students.

I have gained an international reputation as a veterinary clinician/scientist/educator, and have

given invited clinical presentations at universities and conferences throughout North America

and abroad.

Page 49: Curriculum Vitae Thomas K. Graves, D.V.M., Ph.D.21. Graves TK. Feline Hyperthyroidism: an update (part 2). Feline Health Topics for Veterinarians (Cornell Feline Health Center), 12:5-6,

I was honored with the university-wide award for teaching of graduate and professional

students at the University of Illinois in 2010, and received college-wide teaching awards four

times during my tenure at Illinois.

I conceived the original plan, and served on the team that developed and implemented the

Illinois Integrated Veterinary Medical Curriculum, a concept in medical education that

distinguished the University of Illinois as a leader in innovative veterinary education at that

time.

I helped plan and led the Chicago Center for Veterinary Medicine, first as a teaching

laboratory for veterinary students to learn primary care, and eventually as an innovative

business model that supported the development of emergency and specialty services, training

of undergraduate and high school students, and outreach into the under-represented and

under-served communities in the City of Chicago.

I led a talented team of faculty in achieving full AVMA-COE accreditation for our new

veterinary college, with no deficiencies in any standards, and with no delays in planning or

implementation of programs and facilities.

I have managed capital, salary, and operating budgets for our new college, and have

significantly exceeded pro forma and budget projections each year.

My team’s fund-raising and partnership efforts have resulted in more dollars raised for

students and programs at the College of Veterinary Medicine than for all other colleges at

Midwestern University combined.

My outreach efforts have led to fruitful collaborations and relationships with veterinary

associations, other colleges and universities, agricultural organizations, community groups,

business leaders, private industry, and government officials in Arizona.

I have recruited, led, and supported an unusually diverse and highly functional team of

faculty.

Although I did not set out on my veterinary path with the goal of being a dean, I have discovered

that this work is extremely satisfying when it involves service to the diverse missions and many

stakeholders of a veterinary college. Veterinary medicine faces many significant challenges, and

I truly believe your college can solve them. I would very much like to explore the possibility of

bringing my ideas, my skills, my energy, and my productivity to the University of Florida.

Sincerely,

Thomas K. Graves, DVM, PhD, DAVCIM

Dean and Professor
