Details - Chair, Department of Pathobiology (Sep 2008 to Aug 2013)
Represent the Department within the College and broader University in all research, teaching, and service activities, 26 faculty, 4 administrative staff, 20 research/technical staff, 70 graduate students in Diploma, MSc, DVSc, and PhD programs, approximately $4 million annual research funding, annual departmental budget outside of research including salaries approximately $12 million. Meet with all faculty members annually regarding promotion and tenure and lead the departmental meetings making recommendations to the college committee. Internal review of the department’s undergraduate teaching program. Successful review. External review of the department’s graduate & research programs by the Ontario Council of Graduate Studies. Hosting of external reviewers. Very complimentary review.
Completed the design phase of the new Pathobiology AHL building ($65 million) started by the previous Chair and orchestrated the implementation phase (approximately 1 year). Worked with faculty and staff to choose, order and put in place new equipment (approximately $2 million). Lead the move and settling-in of approximately 400 individuals to the new building. Took an additional 2 years of effort to work with engineers, contractors, and architects to overcome building deficiencies. Worked closely with the AHL Director to resolve many building issues. Conceived and initiated Pathobiology’s Poultry Health Research Network (PHRN). Transitioned the leadership of this program to Dr. S. Sharif, a prominent poultry immunologist/virologist. The PHRN is a College initiative and has start-up funds to further build the program. Wrote the text for departmental programs for the Program Prioritization Process (PPP). University-wide program aimed at rating academic and non-academic programs/units. Member College Curriculum Review Committee

Service From January 1996 I was a member of a joint committee looking at the amalgamation of the laboratory services offered by the OVC and the Veterinary Laboratory Services Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs. The committee met almost weekly. The merged lab began operation in April 1997. In January 1995, I became the Laboratory Co-ordinator for the College and in that role I meet once a week or once every other week for two hours with the Joint Veterinary Teaching Hospital Executive Committee. From Spring 1986 until April 1997, I was the Service Chief of the clinical pathology laboratory. In this capacity I was responsible for all facets of the day-to-day operation of the laboratory.
I served as supervisor of the Clinical Immunology Laboratory during July/August 2001 to assist during vacation.
International involvement and research leave
I have been invited to speak and interact with researchers and professional organizations in Australia, Indonesia, United States, Mexico, Middle East, and Korea. This has often been for my interests in the area of the bovine retroviruses and various areas in clinical pathology. I have co-operative research programs with researchers in Canada and the United States in the areas of the bovine retroviruses and hereditary nephritis. My research in BVDV involves collaborators in Canada, United Kingdom and the United States. I was on research leave from the beginning of January 1994 until the end of June 1994 as a Visiting Research Scientist at the Kimron Veterinary Institute
-50-
and the Koret Veterinary School which is part of the Faculty of Agriculture at the Hebrew University. The time was primarily spent in preparing manuscripts and grant applications and interacting with pathologists and research scientists at the Institute and the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot in the field of the bovine retroviruses.
I had a research leave from 1 July 2002 to 1 July 2003. I remained on-site at the University of Guelph. This was spent attending conferences, writing manuscripts and grant applications and updating teaching materials.
