Research Interests

1. Design and synthesis of anti-cancer prodrugs having targeting properties which are

determined on the linker’s type and nature. The variability in the pHs of the cancer

and normal cell’s media plays a dominant role in the selection of the linker

(promoiety). The design of these prodrugs will be executed using DFT, Ab initio

and molecular mechanics methods.

2. Design, synthesis, characterization and in vitro and in vivo kinetics of pro-prodrug

systems to be used for the delivery for certain drugs that have poor water solubility

or/and have low bioavailability using ab initio, DFT, semiempirical, molecular

mechanics as well as molecular dynamics and conformational dynamics methods.

The in-vitro studies will be conducted in media mimics that of stomach (pH 1.2),

intestine (pH 6.8) and blood circulation (pH 7.4). The in-vivo studies will be

conducted in certain animals and the pharmacokinetic parameters will be

determined using advanced technology such as, HPLC and LC-MS.

3. Design and synthesis of linkers to be used for masking bitter taste of drugs that

contain a hydroxyl or amine groups (antimalarial, anti-hypertension, anti-bleeding,

antibacterial and anticancer drugs) using DFT calculation methods. The synthesis

will be carried out using standard organic methods and the kinetic rates of the

intramolecular processes will be determined by HPLC monitoring.

4. Design and synthesis of bitter taste antagonists for inactivation of the bitter taste

receptor 14.The design will be accomplished using molecular orbital and molecular

mechanics methods.

5. Pharmaceuticals removal from wastewater using clay micelle complex, hollow

fiber, spiral wounds, charcoal and other adsorbents.

6. Pharmaceuticals removal from wastewater using photodegradation methods such

as light/TiO2.

7. Stability of Pharmaceuticals in wastewater and isolation and characterization of

degradation products (metabolites).

Teaching Philosophy

Generally, students are inquisitive. The main goal of my teaching philosophy is to

encourage seeking answers. By adopting such way the students advance. I seek to

facilitate and accelerate this advancement of knowledge, and the main theme of my

teaching philosophy is reasoned thought. My goal is to encourage thinking in rational

ways, so that this can be applied in other, unfamiliar situations. I particularly

emphasize learning to think about trends and directions rather than rote memorization

of facts.

In order to further encourage seeking answers to the questions around us, I try to

encourage the questions themselves. One way in which I have done this during my

whole teaching career is to design a course based on answering questions. The class is

based on first asking the questions, and then developing the principles to explain the

concepts as needed. This is just the reverse of most science classes where principles are

Page 5: CURRICULUM VITAE Rafik Karaman€¦ · 1 CURRICULUM VITAE Rafik Karaman Address: Work: College of Pharmacy, Al-Quds University, Jerusalem. Tel. and Fax +970-2-2790413. Cell. phone

5

presented and then a few examples are added at the end.

Furthermore, I aim to encourage a sense of wonderment in the world around us. We

all wonder about the world around us. We must continue to ask the "how?" and

"why?" questions in order to advance.

Another important element of my teaching philosophy is encouraging reasoned written

and oral work, especially in developing logical arguments. A major factor of this is

spending my time making suggestions, as students can only learn to present their ideas

more effectively if someone shows them how and why modifications could be made to

their natural style to make it clearer.

Personal contact with students is essential to my approach. Many need encouragement

to talk to their teachers, so I emphasize my availability for informal discussion and my

willingness to help them sort out any problems they have with what they are learning.

My experience as a teacher is greatly enriched by this contact with students.

The teaching philosophy that I have applied during my teaching career involves the

following main keys:

I- Recall main key concepts learned earlier.

II-Posing a question

III- Solving or answering the question, asset of tools is developed

IV-Examples are given on tools and how they can be utilized.

V-Problems are raised and solved on the board.

VI-Further questions are asked to gain a feed-back from the students.

VII-In concluding the lecture, an overview revision of what was established is given.

Clue on the materials that will be covered during the next lecture is given.

In short, the lecture consists of a sequence of questions for every student to think

about, and explanation of the possible answers and tools will be given.
