I injected mice with cultured tumor cells, sampled the resultant tumors, and studied the


microscopic features of the tumors.

Sputum Cytology

I was the P.I. of this grant. I produced experimental pulmonary infections in dogs and studied changes in the bronchial cells. Later, I extended the research to human subjects and published the original observations. The following publications resulted from this project:

I was the pathologist studying the guinea pig placentas infected with cytomegalovirus (CMV). This work was done with the Department of Pediatrics and the Division of Infectious Disease.

It has an ISI impact factor of 1.527 and ranks 5 out of 29 head and neck journals. This article has had 27 citations.

2. Virmani R, Bewtra C, McAllister HA, Schulte RD: Intrapericardial giant lymph node hyperplasia. American Journal of Surgical Pathology 1982; 6:475-481.

I did most of the work on this paper with other authors being responsible for clinical contributions. The American Journal of Surgical Pathology is the main surgical pathology journal in North America with an ISI impact factor of 4.269 and ranking of 4 out of 67 journals. This article has had 7 citations.

3. Reznicek SB, Hayes DF, Campbell AS, Bewtra C: Cytological changes induced by pulmonary infarction in a canine model. Journal of Surgical Research 1982; 33:443-455.

This article deals mainly with my original laboratory research of pulmonary infarctions in dogs, and the studies were extended to humans in the following article. The Journal of Surgical Research publishes original articles regarding clinical and laboratory investigation relevant to surgical practice. It ranks 33 out of 141 surgical journals and an ISI impact factor of 1.674. This article has had 3 citations.

4. Bewtra C, Dewan N, O’ Donohue WJ Jr.: Exfoliative sputum cytology in pulmonary embolism. Acta Cytologica 1983; 27:489-496.

This study extended to humans the previous research (article #3 above) in an experimental model. Acta Cytologica is the oldest international cytology journal with an ISI impact factor of 1.391 and a ranking of 28 out of 67 journals. This article has had 12 citations plus citations in major cytopathology textbooks.

This is the pathology description of a complication following bypass surgery. I was the principle author and described of the pathologic features. I am the primary author of this pathology paper coauthored with the electron microscopy technologist. This is a detailed description of uses of electron microscopy in diagnostic cytology. Acta Cytologica is the oldest and best known international cytology journal with an ISI impact factor of 1.391 and ranking of 28 of 67 pathology journals. This article has been cited 11 times.

metastasis. Nebraska Medical Journal 1986; 71:126-130.

This is a case report in which I mentored the Medicine resident, Martha Arouni, and performed the pathology evaluation myself. Nebraska Medical Journal was, at the time, the official journal of the Nebraska Medical Association.

10. Emmert GM, Bewtra C: Fine needle aspiration of mucinous cystic neoplasm of the pancreas: a

case study. Diagnostic Cytopathology 1986; 2:69-71.

This is a case report of a relatively new entity. I mentored the first author who was a cytotechnologist at Saint Joseph Hospital. I was the principle author. Diagnostic Cytopathology is the major American cytopathology journal with an ISI impact factor of 0.937 and ranking of 42 out of 67 similar journals. This article has had 18 citations.

11. Lynch HT, Bewtra C, Lynch JF: Familial peritoneal ovarian carcinomatosis - a new clinical

entity? Medical Hypothesis 1986; 21:171-177.

This is a hypothesis article about a recently described entity and our experiences with it. Medical Hypothesis is a journal of general medicine, statistics and editorial reviews. This is a surgical article describing a rare condition and evaluation of appropriate therapy. My work on the pathology of this condition constituted about one-third the effort of preparing this article. Surgery ranks at the top 3.6% of all scientific biomedical journals indexed by Science Citation Index. It is sponsored by the Society of University Surgeons and is the premier peer-reviewed journal covering all aspects of surgery. It has an ISI impact factor of 2.456. This article has been cited 11 times.
