IV. Administrative Activities A. My activities at Oklahoma State University are directed 100% toward administrative activities. While

I intend to publish remaining data sets from my work in Texas, my role at OSU is to manage and

provide direction for a department of 21 faculty, 6 administrative support staff, 3 research associates, 8

post-doctoral associates, 55 graduate students and 260 undergraduate students. Post-doctorates and

graduate students are mentored directly by NREM faculty, but I am responsible for facilitating that

process. I also occasionally guest lecture in some of the NREM courses and give presentations to

various audiences that promote the department. I also am responsible for the OSU collaboration with

the South Central Climate Science Center Project administered by the University of Oklahoma.

V. Research Activities A. My research interests while with Texas A&M AgriLife were focused on rangeland vegetation ecology

and developing sustainable strategies for managing woody plant invasions on Southern Great Plains

(SGP) grasslands and rangelands. Specific goals were to:

1. Quantify the processes associated with woody plant expansion on SGP rangelands

2. Quantify the competitive interactions between woody plants and grasses

3. Determine the most sustainable management options for mitigating the negative effects of

woody plant invasions

4. Determine potential of rangeland woody plants for bioenergy uses

Goal 1 included documenting rates of invasion of species such as mesquite and juniper, and

determining the mechanisms by which they have successfully invaded into grasslands. I have studied

mesquite and juniper water use and photosynthesis, mesquite root growth in response to different soil

moisture regimes, mesquite seedling ecology, and the effects of animals as consumers and distributers

of mesquite seeds. Collaborators: Steve Archer, Bill Pinchak, Tom Boutton, Pete Jacoby, Bill Dugas,

Greg Asner, Keith Owens, Rod Heitschmidt, and Jeff Slosser.

Goal 2 measured herbaceous growth and species composition responses to different densities

and growth forms of mesquite and juniper species. Collaborators: Bill Pinchak, Richard Teague, Tom

Boutton, Mike Castellano, and Harold Wiedemann.

Goal 3 compared effects of seasonal fires on brush, grasses, soil carbon and CO2 flux. Herbicide

research determined effects on target and non-target species and wildlife habitat. Collaborators:

Richard Teague, Pete Jacoby, Tom Boutton, Bill Dugas, Charles Hart and Tim Steffens.

Goal 4 has included development of biomass prediction models for mesquite and juniper, use of

remote sensing to quantify woody biomass at pasture scales, harvesting trials, gasification and

torrefaction of wood chips, and development of bioenergy economic models for rangeland woody

plants. Collaborators: Soren Popescu, Ben Wu, Kalyan Annamalai, Travis Whitney, John Walker,

Srini Ale, Seong Park and Tong Wang.

An unusual feature in my publication record is that I was senior-author or the primary mentor of

the senior author on over 70% of the refereed journal articles I published. This trend was mostly the

product of working at a remote off-campus research station where it was difficult to recruit graduate

students and develop collaborations with campus faculty. Off-campus faculty that provided

inspiration were Dr. Darrell Ueckert, Dr. Rod Heitschmidt, and Dr. Bill Dugas.

VII. Teaching Activities

A. My appointment at Texas A&M AgriLife in Vernon was 100% research. In this capacity I co-

chaired several graduate students and served on several graduate student committees. In addition,

from 2011 to 2015 I had the opportunity to teach as an Adjunct Instructor the Introduction to

Biology class at Vernon College, a 2-year community college in Vernon, TX. This activity

allowed me to interact with undergraduate students and fulfill a desire to introduce students that

had very little exposure to science in high school to science and biology. The Fall semester (Biol-

1406) covered biological molecules, cells, photosynthesis and respiration, DNA and RNA,

genetics, the scientific method and evolution. The spring semester (Biol-1407) covered

taxonomy and classification, a comparison of animal organ systems, plant anatomy and evolution,

population growth and the basics of ecology.
