CAREER PROFILE AND INTERESTS
Presently, senior researcher at Noragric, Dept of International Environment and Development Studies,
University of Life Sciences, Norway.
30 years working experience in applied research, teaching, assignments and consultancies with focus on
rural development, agriculture, food- and livelihood security, sustainable use and management of natural
resources in a climate change perspective, institutional and community development, mainly in the semi
arid, food insecure and conflict affected areas of Africa and Asia. Special competence on regions and
countries: West Africa: Mali, Niger Eastern Africa: Tanzania, Ethiopia, Sudan. Central Asia:
Afghanistan, Nepal.
Extensive leadership and management experience from academic institutions, civil society organizations
in Norway and in developing countries. Member in several national and international boards. Extensive
field experience from Mali and Afghanistan, and extensively used as consultant for different international
organizations, NORAD and Ministry of Foreign Affairs for project evaluations and reviews, training
workshops, short term studies, project planning, implementation and monitoring.
Main vision: Bridging gaps, and create synergy between different stakeholders to improve relevance,
impact and sustainability of research and development activities, projects and programmes, to improve
food security and livelihoods. Thematic fields of interest: the relief and long term development
continuum, participatory, interdisciplinary and multi stakeholder approaches, mainstreaming of socio-
economic and gender variables into agricultural research and development.

MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE
35 years working experience, 16 years in leadership and management positions
2004-2009: Head of Department, Dept.of International Environment and Development Studies,
University of Life Sciences, Norway. Administrative and academic strategic leadership in daily
management of the department in a multicultural and interdisciplinary environment - with links to
numerous local, national and international actors, mainly in developing countries. Main highlights:
Development of a new strategy for the department (2008-2013), reorganization of the research groups
into research clusters, renewal of the educational programme to include a new MSc programme in
International Relations in collaboration with NUPI (Norwegian Policy Research Institute).

2004-2008: Resident representative, Norwegian Church Aid, Kabul, Afghanistan,
Peshawar/Pakistan.
Responsible for a 70 mill NOK rural development programme, involving administrative and program
staff in Kabul and program implementation through 17 recognized local Afghan NGOs in 5 provinces,
Uruzgan, Bamyan, Dai Kundi, Ghazni and Faryab. Overall responsible for management of relief –and
development projects in Peshawar and Lahore implemented by Pakistani local NGOs until end 2006.
Main achievements: Strategy development for the period 2004-2009. Initiation, design and
implementation, monitoring and evaluation of a new integrated rural development programme, focusing
on agriculture, water, energy and health in close collaboration with the Afghan government and civil
society organisations. Piloted and successfully implemented a rural water and energy programme,
focusing on community ownership and control, training and empowerment of rural women in close
collaboration with the Community Development Councils( CDCs). Initiated, and administrated a new
program office and program activities in Maimana, Faryab, province from 2006, in close collaboration
with the province and district government authorities and local NGOs. Implemented numerous training
workshops for capacity building of staff, and local NGOs mainly with regard to project management and
monitoring.
2000-2004. Head of International Education, Noragric, Dept of International Environment and
Development Studies. Heading the Educational Committee at Noragric and international education
program development. Renewed the existing MSc programme in Management of Agriculture and Natural
Resource Management from a NORAD funded programme to a self financed new MSc programme 2003,
“Development Studies- Poverty, Environment and Collective Action”. Initiation and design of new field
courses in Uganda and Nepal in close collaboration with Faculty of Forestry and Natural Resources at
Makerere University Kampala, Uganda, and Trivhvan University , Kathmandu, Nepal. The course
development included joint development of research based course curricula to address interdisciplinary
approaches to sustainable management of natural resources. Initiated and designed the MSc courses
Project management, Exercises in Field Research Methods, Rural Development (5 cr) and Sustainable
Rural Livelihoods (10cr).Integration of the new courses to the UMB university structure, extensive
networking with University partners in the South. Promoted collaborating institutions as regional centres
for teaching and training of natural resource management. Lead the development of a new BSc
programme in development Studies, approved by the University in 2004.
Heading Noragric’s contribution to the triangular cooperation with EARTH University in Costa Rica and
the Salzburg Seminar in Austria. The joint project,”Sustainability, Education and the Management of
Change in the Tropics”, targeted agricultural institutions of higher learning in Central and Latin America,
in Africa and in Asia (see: www.changetropics.org). Hosted the mid-term planning meeting in Norway in
June 2001, contributed to regional conferences in Africa and in Asia in 2002, and hosted the final seminar
in Norway in September 2003.
