B. BIODATA

Prof. Kiama Gitahi is the Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Human Resource and

Prof. Kiama has acquired 15 years uninterrupted hands-on administrative experience at

senior level in the basic and higher education Management in Kenya. He has been a

member of University of Nairobi Senate and University Executive Board since 2003 and 2016

respectively. In 2003, he was appointed as the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary

served until 2010 when he was appointed the Director of Wangari Maathai Institute for

Peace and Environmental Studies. He served as Director of the Institute until 2016 when he

was appointed as Principal, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences. Prof. Kiama

played a key role in conceptualizing and actualizing the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace

vision of the Institute. Unfortunately, Prof Wangari Maathai passed on in 2011 just about 3

years after the Institute was approved by the University of Nairobi Council.

In order to hone his strategic leadership skills, Prof. Kiama registered and successfully

completed a senior management course in Strategic leadership and Development Program

at the Kenya School of Government in August 2014. Besides offering leadership at the

University Prof. Kiama has good experience in governance of Basic Education in the country.

He is currently serving as the Chairman of the Board of Management of Gatugi Girls

Secondary School in Nyeri County (2015 to date) and Utafiti Primary School in Makueni

County (2016 to date). He has served as a member of Board of Governors of Gatugi

Secondary School for several years.

In October 2018, Prof. Kiama was elected to serve as the Chairman of Deans and Principals

of the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM). The

mission of RUFORUM is to strengthen the capacities of universities to foster innovations

responsive to demands of small-holder farmers

Prof. Kiama is an accomplished scholar with proven track record in formulating and

managing academic programs as demonstrated by his publications in peer review journals;

supervising and mentoring Master and PhD students and serving as academic head in the

14 Masters Students to completion and co-authored over 140 journal and conference

publications.

University of Nairobi upon graduation in 1990 as an assistant Lecturer and later promoted to

Lecturer (1995), Senior Lecturer (2002), Associate Professor (2012) and Professor (2016). He

has a cumulative 29 years of research and teaching experience at various institutions of

higher learning including University of Nairobi, St. Andrews University in Scotland, Free

University of Berlin, Germany, University of Bern, Switzerland, University of Witwatersrand,
