For 11 years, I was clinically and administratively responsible for all psychological and
neuropsychological services to the three inpatient units in the Neuropsychiatry Program at a provincial
psychiatric hospital (approximately 75 beds). As a new consultation-liaison service, we developed and
conducted psychological and neuropsychological evaluations, and we developed behavioral programs for
the management of agitation and aggression. I supervised a staff consisting of one postdoctoral fellow,
one three-quarter-time psychological assistant, and varying numbers of graduate students and interns
(usually 1-2 at a time). For approximately 18 months, I also supervised a masters-level staff psychologist.

Clinical Innovations
Improving the Methodology for Identifying and Quantifying Mild Cognitive Impairment, Across
the Lifespan, in Psychiatry and Neurology: For nearly 20 years, I have conducted research relating to
the reliability, validity, and clinical accuracy of neuropsychological assessment. Since 2006, I have led a
programmatic research effort relating to developing and evaluating new evidence-based psychometric
criteria for mild cognitive impairment in psychiatry and neurology. This research program has resulted in
a new methodology for how to interpret neuropsychological test results in day-to-day clinical practice.
The new methodology improves accuracy and reduces false positive diagnoses of mild cognitive
impairment. I have implemented this new clinical methodology in programs in Canada, and am beginning
to implement the methodology in Boston. I have trained interns and post-doctoral fellows to use the new
approach. Between 2009 and 2014, I presented at numerous national and international conferences on this
new methodology and how to use it in clinical practice (including conferences in London, England;
Helsinki, Finland; Oslo, Norway; Vancouver, Canada; and Washington, DC). The methodology is
summarized in the book chapters below. This methodology will be the topic for my Presidential Address
at the National Academy of Neuropsychology conference in 2015.

Narrative Report
I joined the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School in January of
2013 on a half-time basis, moving to full-time in early 2014. I spent the first 18 years of my career in the
Faculty of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, at the University of British Columbia. I was recruited in
1995 as a clinician-scientist under the Strategic Academic Plan of Riverview Hospital, the Provincial
Psychiatric Hospital. The hospital fully externally funded my University of British Columbia Department
of Psychiatry faculty position. I was recruited to develop new clinical services, develop and implement
program evaluation, and lead a program of research in the Neuropsychiatry Program. As the hospital
downsized (Neuropsychiatry closed in 2006) and eventually closed, my faculty position was then
externally funded by the British Columbia Mental Health and Addictions Services Agency (BCMHAS).
Over the years, I was provided additional provincial funding through the hospital and BCMHAS to
support a small clinical, administrative, and research staff.
I am a clinician scientist. I am a registered psychologist in British Columbia and Ontario, and a licensed
psychologist in Massachusetts. My primary area of practice is clinical neuropsychology. Clinical
neuropsychologists specialize in the assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of people who have
medical, psychiatric, neurological, or neurodegenerative conditions that affect their cognition, mental
health, or behavior. I am deeply committed to improving evidence-based clinical care in
neuropsychology, and I train graduate students, interns, post-doctoral fellows, and colleagues in new
clinical approaches. I serve as the Director of the MassGeneral Hospital for Children Sports Concussion
Program. In this program, I am developing, implementing, and evaluating new neuropsychology and
rehabilitation services for young athletes. I also serve as the Associate Director of Traumatic Brain Injury
for the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Home Base Program. In this program, I
am developing, implementing, and evaluating new neuropsychology and rehabilitation services for post-
911 military veterans.
My teaching activities are primarily through local, regional, national, and international invited lectures,
seminars, and workshops. I also provide individualized training, supervision, and mentoring of the clinical
work and research of graduate students, interns, and post-doctoral fellows. I have been providing clinical
and research mentorship, supervision, and training since 1996. I served as the Director of a Canadian
Psychological Association approved internship in clinical psychology from 2003-2009, and I coordinated
and supervised the longest-running post-doctoral fellowship in clinical neuropsychology in Western
Canada (1998-2013).
I have an internationally-recognized research program in two broad areas: (i) outcome from mild
traumatic brain injury (across the lifespan, in athletes, civilians, military service members, and veterans),
and (ii) improving the methodology for assessing and identifying mild cognitive impairment. I have
published more than 310 empirical articles, reviews, and book chapters. I am involved in numerous
studies relating to sport-related concussion, mild traumatic brain injury in civilians, and outcome from
injury in service members and veterans. We approach our research from a broad biopsychosocial
perspective, and we use diverse technologies and outcome measures such as genomics, structural
neuroimaging, microstructural neuroimaging (i.e., diffusion tensor imaging), cognitive testing,
psychological assessment, and balance testing. For nearly 20 years, I have also been conducting research
relating to the reliability, validity, and clinical accuracy of neuropsychological assessment. I am the lead
investigator in a multi-year, programmatic research effort relating to developing and evaluating new
evidence-based psychometric criteria for mild cognitive impairment in psychiatry and neurology.
I have had leadership positions in numerous national and international organizations and groups. I served
as the Chair for the Canadian Psychological Association Section on Clinical Neuropsychology from 2003-
2010. I served as Vice Chair of the Policy and Planning Committee of the National Academy of
Neuropsychology from 2007-2013 (in the US). This committee is responsible for writing position and
education papers for the Academy. I was a Member of the Board of Governors of the International
Neuropsychological Society from 2008-2011. I am currently a member of the Board of Governors of the
International Brain Injury Association. I am the President of the National Academy of Neuropsychology.
I am routinely asked to serve in an advisory capacity on matters relating to sport-related concussion and
mild traumatic brain injury in the military. I served as a consensus panel member for the 3rd and 4th
International Conferences on Concussion in Sport in Zurich, Switzerland in 2008 and 2012. I served as an
Advisor to the Neurocognitive Disorders Workgroup (Traumatic Brain Injury) for the Diagnostic &
Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-V). I also served as a founding member of the
Traumatic Brain Injury Subcommittee of the Defense Health Board, a civilian advisory board to the
United States Secretary of Defense.
