BRIEF BIOGRAPHY
Karen is a registered nurse, academic and researcher with extensive experience in teaching, curriculum development, internationsation, strategic planning and team development. She was appointed as the inaugural Professor Rural Nursing at Monash University School of Nursing and Midwifery in October 2003. During the succeeding 7 years she has demonstrated research leadership that has culminated in the establishment of a robust PhD program and the growth of a research culture within the school. Karen draws from her considerable experience as a senior academic and school head. She was previously the head of a multidisciplinary school that employed 50 academic staff and 7 professional support staff. This role, while challenging provided an opportunity to engage in inter-professional teaching and research. In her current position of Head of the rural Monash School of Nursing and Midwifery Karen has been instrumental in the development of innovative new models of pre-service nursing and midwifery curriculum including graduate entry pre-service and double degree undergraduate programs. Ensuring that curriculum is contemporary, clinically useful and underpinned by best practice is a priority for Karen and the teams she leads. Joint appointments between local health care services and the School is one strategy that has been adopted under her leadership to achieve this aim. Karen has also led teams and developed, marketed and implemented award and non-award programs internationally most notably in Malaysia, Thailand and Papua New Guinea. Karen has taught undergraduate and post graduate students from varied professional backgrounds such as nursing, midwifery, medical imaging, nutrition and dietetics, nuclear medicine, medicine, psychology, physiotherapy, paramedics, policing and teacher education. She has extensive teaching experience in a broad range of modalities namely: face-to-face, distance education, and flexible delivery. Her approach to teaching is guided by adult learning principles and she is committed to ensuring students have a quality educational experience irrespective of the program delivery modality. Karen is an experienced higher degree research supervisor and is frequently involved in PhD and professional doctorate examination. Her own research program targets rural health, chronic disease management, and rural nursing and health workforce in a broad range of contexts. Karen has strong research partnerships nationally and internationally. She is currently working with a group within Monash and from the United Kingdom interested in developing a research program targeting chronic disease management, ageing and palliative care. Locally she is involved in a number of intervention studies involving teams of interprofessional academics and clinicans and is also working with a group of health and social care researchers in Australia and the USA interested in child protection. Karen has been an invited speaker at many national and international conferences and participated as an invited guest in state and national forums concerned with rural issues. Karen is nationally and internationally recognised for her contribution to the development of rural nursing as a specialist discipline. She is a fellow of the Royal College of Nursing Australia (RCNA) and the current chair of the Faculty of Rural Nursing and Midwifery. She held the position of President of Australian Rural Nurses and Midwives (the predecessor organisation) for a period of 7 years, a contribution that was recognised in 2008 when she received the President’s award for outstanding service

and made a fellow of the RCNA for her contribution. Karen is also a fellow of the Joanna Briggs Institute and holds a Clincal Professorship with the JBI, Faculty of Health Sciences Adelaide University. In her role as Head of School she has established professional relationships locally, nationally and internationally. She facilitated the establishment of a Joanna Briggs Institute Collaborating Centre for Chronic Disease Management in partnership with the Monash Graduate Medical School, the Monash Department of Rural Health and Indigenous Studies, Latrobe Regional Hospital and Latrobe Community Health Services. This Centre aims to promote the use of evidence based practice and engage in primary research targeting chronic disease management. Karen is the inaugural Director of this centre. This qualitative, exploratory descriptive study reports on a research project that sought to investigate students’ experience of undertaking research higher degrees. The study is underpinned by a belief that both the student and supervisor share the experience. The author contends that it is incumbent on supervisors to critically evaluate their practice as supervisors. This study provides the mechanism for students to describe their

1992 Masters Thesis into the Mainstream This study examined the issues surrounding the transfer of severely/profoundly
intellectually disabled senior students from a Special Needs School to a mainstreamed local high school (University of Western Sydney, Hawkesbury)
1991 Masters Course Work Project Aboriginal Health, A Local Study This study was undertaken utilising a primary health care framework to identify the
health problems and needs of Aboriginal people living in a rural community in NSW. (University of Western Sydney, Hawkesbury)
1991 Masters Course Work Project Aboriginal Youth Rehabilitation Program: An Evaluation In response to the increasing number of Aboriginal deaths in custody the local
