I am currently employed as a Consultant Anaesthetist with sessional responsibilities in Intensive Care. As a Trainee I have a cumulative experience of over 3 years in critical care, which includes Paediatrics and experience abroad. My final year was spent as the advanced trainee, where I joined the consultant rota, leading ward rounds and overseeing the clinical duties of junior staff. I am familiar with the use of the latest technologies including High Flow Oscillatory Ventilation and PiCCO monitoring. In my most recent post as advanced trainee, I have become familiar with the use of activated protein-c as part of the treatment in the early stages of sepsis. I have been extensively involved in research including multicentre trials and regular attendance of research meetings. My research projects include prokinetics in the critically ill and the use of splancnic blood flow on admission as an indicator of response to resuscitation. I have extensive experience in the transport and retrieval of the critically ill patients whilst in Australia and in stabilization and retrieval of Paediatric patients. My interests include nutrition in the critically ill and non-invasive ventilation. I will complete my training with a CCST in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine.

Anaesthetic ExperienceMy anaesthetic career in the U.K. was started in the South West, although I had some experience in South Africa. I joined a 5-year training program in South Wales in 2000. I have a special interest in anaesthesia for the critically ill and multi-trauma patients, as well as the patient with the difficult airway. My experience in South Africa included working in a peripheral hospital in a third world environment, with limited resources. I was extensively involved with teaching of nursing staff involved with anaesthetics. During my time as a SPR, I completed a M.Sc(Dip) in clinical science, which enabled me to be extensively involved in teaching of medical students as well as on other M.Sc courses.

RESEARCH Current 2002-2003 I am the chief collaborator for the FIRE (Fungal Infection Risk Evaluation) and SWINEFLU studies at York Hospital Enteral feeding in the critically ill. I looked at the effects of prokinetic agents on the absorption of feeding in critically ill patients using the Paracetamol absorption test I researched the effects of splancnic blood flow on morbidity and mortality on admission to ITU using indocyanine green I was involved in the recruitment of patients for the ADDRESS multicentre trial into Activated Protein-C as well as recruitment for the multicentre Surfactant trial. 2002 1991 MSc module in research statistics and trial designs Final year project medical student: Effects of Magnesium on PIH and essential hypertension in pregnancy

AUDIT 1997 2000 2001 Whilst in Australia I looked at the complication rate of central lines on the ward, which led to a centralized service. Pre-operative ECHO requests led to a standardized protocol for requests whilst I was in Newport. I looked at the most common reasons why patient were re-admitted to ITU following discharge to HDU. This contributed to the eventual amalgamation of ITU and HDU. I conducted a major audit into the management of severe Pancreatitis on ITU, which led to a consensus on use of prophylactic antibiotics and a standardized feeding regimen. Welsh Intensive care society presentation 2002 Why do patients die after ITU discharge? I investigated the possibility of adverse events after discharge that could have led to death on the ward. Welsh Intensive care society presentation
