• We are planning to go to Kartchner Caverns this year, and it is quite expensive. We APPRECIATE any donations!

• Friday Choice Time (Fun Friday) is for taking responsibility for all class work and homework during the week

Snacks

• Healthy snacks may be brought in for individual consumption, or to be shared with the class

• Water in water bottles only

• All food must be store bought

• Birthdays: You may provide a healthy snack that your child will pass out at regular snack time.

Reading• Children learn to read by reading and

by being read to by an adult• Classroom reading groups to read

stories, discuss vocabulary and literary elements, (author’s purpose, characters, setting, problem and solution)

• Write summaries and take tests on comprehension

• Writing and language integrated with reading

• Focus is on comprehension and fluency

Writing• Students will write on a daily basis• The 6 Trait Model is used in conjunction

Homework• Homework sent home on Fridays,

including spelling and vocabulary words.

• Due back by the following Friday

New Assessments for 2014-2015• The AIMS test, which is not aligned to the existing

standards, was used for the last time in Spring 2014.• Arizona State Board of Education is devoted to the

selection of a rigorous assessment to measure student learning and inform the State’s accountability measures.

• The State Board of Education’s final selection and adoption of a new statewide English language arts and mathematics achievement assessment is expected to occur in early October, 2014.

• This new statewide achievement assessment will be aligned to Arizona’s College and Career Ready Standards and will be administered beginning in the spring of 2015.
