Term 1 Week 7 - Tuesday, 10th March 2020 Issue 7
7 weeks of school have flown by in 3A!
This term we have been busy writing narratives, sending our
favourite Australian animals on big adventures. Our vocabulary
is thriving as we use our senses to describe our characters and
settings with astounding adjectives. In maths, we have been
expanding our understanding of place value to the thousands,
and have learnt some handy new strategies to use when we are
adding and subtracting. We are scientists on a mission in 3A,
and our latest mission was to discover if a giraffe and a camel
could be grouped together based on their features. Did you know
these animals have so much in common?
This term we are working hard to regulate our emotions and
communicate clearly. We use our Zones of Regulation to identify
how we are feeling and have created some strategies to use
when we feel ourselves moving out of our green zone. What we
have learnt so far in our AUSLAN lessons is also helping us
expand the way we communicate.
In 3A we are patient, persistent, polite, positive and passionate
learners who strive to work as a team to achieve our best. We
can’t wait to
achieve our
learning and
behaviour
goals as we
grow and
change this
year!

3A and
Miss Hunt

Sound out and blend words Practice sounding out and blending words with your child. For example, you could say “What sounds can you hear in the word ‘chop’ – What is the first sound? What sound is in the middle? What sound is at the end?” Play word and sound games Games based on recognising sounds are great for developing phonemic awareness. ‘I Spy’ is a good example, or just taking turns thinking of words that begin or end with a particular sound, or that rhyme with a particular word. Remember to focus on sounds rather than letters – for example, if your child is coming up with words that start with the sound /c/, both ‘cup’ and ‘kitchen’ are correct, even though the sound is made by different letters.
Learning to Read: Phonemic awareness
Use songs, nursery rhymes and tongue twisters Keep singing songs, reading nursery rhymes and poems, and reciting tongue twisters, especially those that are built around sound patterns. Most children love learning them, and they’re a great way to strengthen phonemic awareness. Praise Remember to praise your child’s efforts as well as their successes – this builds their confidence to keep trying, and makes them a more resilient learner. Children learn by making ‘mistakes’, so take the same approach as when your little one was learning to walk – praise their effort, then encourage them to try again, or give them a bit of help, or move on to something else. Use your home language If your home language is not English, you can also apply the same ideas in your own language. This will develop your child’s phonemic awareness skills and help them learn to read English (and your own language).

REPORTING
Term 1, Week 6 overall class attendance: Prep – 92.11% Grade 1 – 93.54% Grade 2 – 94.66% Grade 3 – 90.97% Grade 4 – 94.05% Grade 5 – 90.39% Grade 6 – 90.00% Target: 95% Please ensure you are contacting the school every day that your child is away from school. Please make sure you contact the school by 9:30am via telephone: 4672 9266 to leave your absence message, text message: 0426 305 434 or email: [email protected] if your child/ren are going to be absent from school. Please make sure you leave your child/rens name, reason for the absence and when they will be returning.
The job of a teacher has 3 main parts. Firstly, it is a teacher’s job to organise a sequence of learning activities (called the curriculum). Secondly, to design tasks and evaluate student responses to these tasks that allow children to show what they have learnt from the learning activities (assessment). Thirdly, it is a teacher’s job to organise the results of the assessments and provide that information to parents, along with an evaluation of the child’s progress (reporting).
Parent / Teacher Interviews are scheduled for the first three weeks of Term 2. Shortly, you will receive a request from your child’s class teacher to indicate times which you are available for a Parent/Teacher Interview. The school will confirm a day and time with you by the end of Term 1. 3-way reporting for students in Years 1 to 6 will be used again this year. In 3-way reporting the child is included in the interview. This child’s portfolio of work becomes the central focus with the child showing his/her parents the work that has been achieved so far. The teacher acts as facilitator. Learning goals are set for the rest of the year. Feedback from parents in previous years on this form of reporting has been positive.

This week has seen the School Improvement Unit interview many members of our school community including teachers, teacher aides, cleaners, admin staff, students, parents, P&C members and community members outside our school. The initial feedback from the review team was extremely positive and they were very complimentary of our school and the work we have done around “Teams” and “Wellbeing”. Within a few weeks I will have their report which will outline the next steps for improvement and begin to develop our action plan for the next four years. I look forward to sharing this with you.
Over the last few weeks, I have been keeping you informed about our plans to improve student “Achievement” levels. The reviewers have suggested we focus on one area (English, Maths, Science or Reading) and continue our ongoing work with Dr Lyn Sharratt. As part of her evidence based work our leadership team go on a walk around our school fortnightly that is focused on questioning children in classrooms to gauge a detailed understanding of how the teaching and learning cycles across the school are going in terms of consistency from room to room.
Over the years I am sure as parents we have all heard of Explicit Instruction, and would have seen the WALT (We are Learning to) , WILF (What I’m looking for) and TIB (This is because....) posters in our classrooms. Dr Sharratt uses a similar model that involves a two-step process (Learning Intent – What is the actual intent of the curriculum and my lesson?) and (Success Criteria – What do children of all ability levels need to be able to demonstrate to show they have been successful and do they know?).
The questioning process asks these five questions:
What are you learning today? Why?
How well are you doing?
How do you know that’s how you are going?
How can you improve? and finally,
Where will you go for help?
These five easy questions are vital for ongoing school and classroom improvement. Does the child actually know what he or she is learning, and have they fully understood my instructions? Can they articulate how they are going and how they know they are being successful and why? Is the feedback I am giving to the children strong enough to ensure they fully understand the learning journey, and do they have enough strategies to seek assistance in the classroom beyond simply putting up their hand?
As parents we all question our children at the end of the school day with a simple, ‘How was your day?’ Generally, we get a, ‘Good,’ ‘Ok’ or ‘Alright’ response. As we move forward in 2020, I encourage our parents to try and dig deeper so that our students learn to really articulate themselves and use oral language with high level vocabulary to enhance their learning.

This week’s value: Responsibility This week’s rule: Be in the right place at the right time A respectful, orderly, and safe school is the foundation for a successful learning environment. Children and adults have a right to expect standards of behaviour which allow teaching and learning to take place, and which make school a happy and secure place for all. This week’s Value lesson will help students to develop self- control and problem solving skills by following the be in the right place, at the right time expectation. Successfully, this expectation will help them to manage a situation and to make a better decision on being in the right place at the right time. Students will learn that as individuals we do have control over our own decisions in order to prevent the safety risks associated with them. Students will engage in lessons that will also reiterate to students the expectations of them throughout the school day. It is important as a school we ensure students are accounted for from the moment they arrive at school to the moment they leave. Teachers will explicitly teach students what the expectations of them are before school, during lunch times and after school. Chinchilla State School’s P&C Association supports the PBL program in the school.
PBL UPDATE

Students can support themselves getting through some of the tough times by learning and practicing useful skills and habits. There’s a wide range of apps out there that can help build these positive approaches by helping young people to:
develop resilience and coping skills track and manage their mood and thoughts improve their learning and communication skills track physical health, including sleep, movement and nutrition.
Useful resources and apps include:
Smiling Mind A modern meditation for young people. It's a unique web and app-based program, designed to help bring balance to young lives.
Wellbeing Week: This week there will be a variety of activities on offer at lunch time to promote mindfulness, kindness and general wellbeing for students. Please see below for details.
Wellbeing Week- Community Kindness Rocks
This week is Wellbeing Week for staff and students at Chinchilla State School. Please see some of the
activities on offer below to support and promote kindness and wellbeing for students. As a part of this Term’s
“Wellbeing Week” students at Chinchilla State School will have the opportunity to participate in The Kindness
Rocks Project. This amazing initiative was started in 2015 by an American, Megan Murphy to spread a moment
of kindness for unsuspecting recipients through randomly placed inspirational rocks. This initiative is all about
spreading kindness one rock at a time and has been underway for some time in the Chinchilla Community.
The Kindness Rocks Project has two goals:
1. Inspire others through randomly placed rocks along the way…
2. Recruit every person who stumbles upon it to join in the pursuit of inspiring others through random acts
of kindness
As a part of this term’s Wellbeing Week at Chinchilla State School students will have the opportunity to make
their very own rock over lunch breaks in the library with staff to bring kindness into our Chinchilla Community.
Once Students have made their very own kindness rock there are just two instructions:
1. Take your rock out of the school grounds and share within our community to inspire others
2. All rocks made will be marked “CSS”. We would love to see photos of any “CSS” rocks you may find on
your journey by sharing on our school P&C Page or other social media outlets.

School Procedures and Routines For new parents and as a reminder to all parents, there are a number of procedures and routines to help our school run smoothly. Listed below are some school routines:- Lunch Breaks: During lunch breaks, year levels are assigned to various eating areas that are supervised by a rostered staff member. At the conclusion to the eating time, the staff member on duty will check that the area is clean and tidy and then release the children to play. Children are required to play safely, sensibly and in a friendly manner. Caps are not to be worn. Wide brimmed hats are to be taken with children at breaks. A ‘NO HAT, NO PLAY’ rule applies in the playground. Children without a hat are required to remain in the library or an undercover area. On the first siren at the end of play, children return to their classes and wait outside in an area designated by their teacher.

What a big few weeks it has been from District Swimming, Basketball and now getting children into District Soccer, Rugby League and Netball trials. Good luck to all students involved with these trails and we hope to mention your names in the upcoming newsletter articles.
As mentioned last week in the newsletter, Run Around Australia is beginning in week 8 and we urge all students to participate and work as a team to run around the country (in terms of kilometers) together as one. We will have a slight change in the modelling of R.A.A so look out for what happens in this space.
Swim shirts must be worn by all students during all water-based activities including swimming lessons. If a swim shirt is unavailable, students can wear a t-shirt. All classes are issued with a pump bottle of SPF30+ water-resistant sunscreen which is available for use during all outdoor activities.
