(DRFT-35) were pulled by Luis Flores. Luis inquired on the removal of the Limitation on Enrollment (LOE) for these courses. James Thornburgh stated that for continuity and that the LOE was no more than a class cap amount. Dee Near asked what the status was of the Class Cap Task Force. Patrick Mitchell stated that they are in the Discussion phase.

BUS 56A is a hands-on class designed to integrate the Merced College chapter of the national CEO Club with administrative and managerial activities designed to increase students' skills in business leadership and management. Students in BUS 56A will focus on improving their team building and communication skills.

(2) MAT-101 (College Prep Math I: Operations of Whole Numbers) Course duration: 45-63 hours; open entry format. Advisory: ENG-121

This is an introductory course of the whole number system, including counting, notation, and the number line. Particular emphasis is placed on the basic computational skills, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

(3) MAT-102 (College Prep Math II: Applications of Whole Numbers) Course duration: 45-63 hours; open entry format. Advisory: MAT-101; ENG-121

This is an introductory course of the whole number system, with an emphasis on application problem solving. Particular emphasis is placed on the area, volume, and perimeter of geometric figures. Items 6A.2 (MAT-101) and 6A.3 (MAT-102) were pulled by Dee Near. Dee

stated that on the “Justification” page in CurricUNET it refers to MATH-91 not MATH-90. After examining both courses it appeared to have been fixed

already. Dee inquired on the ability to track student success. Julie Clark stated that not all the bugs have been worked out yet. Julie also stated that at the Northern California Curriculum Meeting in October it was stated that completing the certificate can be a part of the multiple measures used to place students into MATH-91. Greg Soto stated that students would fill out a “Prerequisite Challenge” and attach a diagnostic report to the challenge and then the faculty can determine if the student is ready for MATH-91. Dee Near stated that we need to make the college aware of the changes forthcoming in non-credit English and mathematics courses.

12. BUSINESS

A. Information: Program Investigation Update Julie Clark stated that the Program Investigation Committee for Corrections met on

November 21st and voted to discontinue the program. The first reading at the Academic Senate is not until January 22nd due to the holidays. The only Corrections course that will remain is CORR-01 which was on todays agenda to be renamed to CRIM-11 and this because it is in the Administration of Justices A.S.-T. and there is a C-ID for this course.

Julie Clark stated that the only program investigation left is Real Estate and we hope to get this investigation underway at the start of the Spring 2015 semester. Julie stated that they plan to offer a 2 course certificate that is required for state licensing and eliminate the current A.A. and Certificate for Real Estate.

B. Discussion: Special Topics Senate Resolution

Julie Clark stated this item was pulled from the agenda and will be relisted on a future agenda.

C. Discussion: Computer and Information Literacy Competency (CILC) Julie Clark stated that Kathy Kanemoto requested to include this on the agenda.

Kathy wanted to discuss making modification to the requirement and making an exam that students can test for competency. Kathy was not present to discuss the topic.

Dee Near stated that there are changes forthcoming in 2015 for the Information Literacy Competency at the federal level.

Lou Ferguson reported that she submitted 30 courses for CSU-GE and IGETC Breadth request and we should get those results on around April 1, 2015.

Patrick Mitchell stated that next semester Valerie Albano and Julie Kehoe will be splitting the SLO Coordinator position. Patrick also mentioned that currently there is discussion regarding the need to do a comprehensive program review and possibly only doing an annual program review.

Kinesiology

A.A.–T.– Kinesiology (12400-AAT)

Current Proposed The Associate in Arts in Kinesiology for Transfer degree (AA-T) is designed for students who are planning on transferring to a California State University (CSU). Upon completion of the transfer associate degree, the student is eligible for transfer with junior standing into the CSU system. Students will be given priority consideration when applying to a particular program that is similar to the student’s community college area of emphasis. The goal of the Associate in Arts in Kinesiology for Transfer degree (AA-T in Kinesiology) is designed to prepare students for transfer into the CSU system to complete a baccalaureate degree in Kinesiology or similar major. For an Associate in Arts in Kinesiology for Transfer (AA-T), students must complete the following: (1) 60 semester CSU-transferable units. BUS 49SF – Strengths Based Management Special Topics

(To Become MGMT 50S) 0.5 unit of college credit – 9 hours

Pass/no Pass only Advisories: READ-81, ENGL-84. Course Description: This course is designed to help participants understand their unique strengths and how applying their strengths can give them their best opportunity for success. Participants will take Gallup’s Strengthsfinder 2.0 assessment and learn strategies to apply their strengths in the workplace and in everyday life. The connection between strengths and employee engagement will be explored. Participants will also learn how to recognize the strengths of others and how to apply this knowledge to help teams work effectively together. Pass/No Pass only. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

A. Analyze the research on the Strengths Based Philosophy and understand why managers should invest in employee’s strengths.

B. Examine the connection between employee engagement and one’s opportunity to use their strengths in the workplace and in everyday life.

Whereas, historically the Merced College Curriculum Committee with approval of the

Academic Senate exempted Special Topics/Experimental courses from the local approval

process;

Whereas, local approval of degree-applicable credit, nondegree-applicable credit, and noncredit

courses must include review by an established curriculum committee according to Title 5,

section 55002;

Whereas, AP4020 states that it is the Curriculum Committees responsibility to approve new and

revised curriculum including all credit and non-credit courses and programs; BP4020 states that

all new programs and program deletions as well as all new courses and course deletions shall be

approved by the Board.

Therefore be it resolved that the Merced College Academic Senate supports the approval

process for Special Topics/Experimental Courses set forth by the Merced College Curriculum

Committee:

Once the discipline faculty has decided they want to offer a Special Topics/Experimental course

with their Deans approval, they notify the Curriculum Chair with a rough draft of the Course

Outline of Record (COR) in either Word format or on CurricUNET. The COR must include the

following information:

Be it further resolved once the course is approved by the Curriculum Committee it is then

forwarded to the Board of Trustee’s for approval before the course can be offered.

Be it further resolved the Chancellor’s Office has set guidelines on how many times a Special

Topics/Experimental course can be offered before it must be submitted to the Chancellor’s

Office as a permanent course, therefore every time the Special Topics/Experimental course is

going to be offered the course must come through the curriculum committee to ensure the

number of offerings do not exceed the guidelines set in the lasted edition of the Chancellor’s

Offices Program and Course Approval Handbook.
