On June 25, Component Fabrication and Assembly’s (CFA) leadership team hosted its mid-year “Leadership, Engagement And Diversity” (LEAD) Business Forum. Matt Needy, director of CFA, briefed attendees on results from the first two quarters of 2012, introduced engagement champions, and celebrated positive division news.
Virginia Supreme Court Justice S. Bernard Goodwyn served as the event’s keynote speaker, and addressed the audience on diversity and inclusion. “Diversity is more than simply acknowledging differences in people,” said Justice Goodwyn. “It also involves recognizing the value of differences, combating discrimination and promoting inclusiveness.”
Chavis Harris, director of EEO, Diversity, and Corporate Citizenship, moderated an interactive audience practice session focusing on diversity and inclusion and why both are important to performance. Members of NNS’ Diversity and Inclusion Council were in attendance along with Becky Stewart, vice president of Manufacturing, and Bruce Hawthorne, Corporate Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary.

Come join fellow shipyard military veterans and guests on Aug. 7 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in the VASCIC Auditorium. Attendees will learn about VERG and how it will add value to NNS and the community. Shipbuilders interested in attending the VERG meeting should contact Marcia Downing (O36) at 688-2152 or via email for meeting details.

Newport News Shipbuilding’s (NNS) Career Pathways Program and The Apprentice School were co-sponsors of this year’s Peninsula K-Next Summer Camp. The technology-focused camp, hosted by Thomas Nelson Community College, is designed to expose 9-11th grade students to advanced manufacturing. More than 30 students from the local community attended the four-day camp.
Students were divided into five groups and tasked with building 20 clocks of three varying designs. The clocks were then judged on safety, organization, teamwork, assembly process production, quality, and cleanliness.
“I was one of the judges,” said Career

Pathways Manager Jennifer McClain. “Each group came with a creative team name and logo, and worked well with each other to assemble the clocks. Overall, it was a great experience. The plan for next year is for the camp to be a full week and perhaps have the students come to NNS for a tour.”
Listed below are the most recent winners of the On-The-Spot Ethics Recognition Program Award. The purpose of the program is for employees to recognize other employees who demonstrate ownership of company values and high standards of ethical behavior in their everyday work activities. Congratulations to the following employees:
Debbie Adams (X88), Joe Tayman (X89), Tanesha Lockett (X89), Gloria Roundtree (X33), Allen Blount (X33), George Williams (X33), Jean Thompson (O14), Michael Wachowiak (E88), Reginald Neale (E84), and Arthur Correll (E46).

The Apprentice Alumni Association was a sponsor of the 17th Annual Children’s Fishing Clinic on July 21. More than 15 shipbuilders attended this year’s event on the James River Bridge Fishing Pier. The event is devoted to teaching children how to fish in hopes that they will learn and enjoy a new outdoor hobby.
“Volunteering at the Fishing Clinic was a fun and enjoyable way to give back to our community,” said Marine Design Apprentice Ashley Ober. “Wonderful memories are made when mingling on the pier with the children and other volunteers.”

Newport News Shipbuilding is now offering departments the opportunity to store records in an electronic record repository. Using the repository will allow shipbuilders to store electronic records directly from their desktop as well as manage and access the files whenever needed. Significant cost savings are possible versus handling and storing paper.
Departments interested in utilizing the electronic records management system should attend one of the sessions listed below. Each session will include a live demo of the storage repository and a Q&A session.
Got Electronic Info? Want Electronic Records Management?
Register for the sessions via the Learning Exchange (course name: “Electronic Records Management - Getting Started”). For more info, contact Dan Longo (O14) at 688-7542 or Darlene Barber (O14) at 380-4340.
