A Guide for Contributors to Current: The J ournal of Marine Education
Current: The J ournal of Marine Education focuses on the aspects of marine education on subjects ranging from
marine science, maritime history, and marine conservation to marine literature, teaching materials, and activities
Currentsaudience is diverse: classroom teachers of all levels; administrators; zoo, aquarium and museum directors
and educators; libraries; staff from state and federal marine programs and organizations; and many others.
ARTICLE CONTENT
Current will consider articles on any marine subject. We are not interested in highly technical research reports or in
extremely subjective, undocumented narratives of personal experiences. Articles explaining teaching techniques and
curriculum design should include specific data to indicate the usefulness of the program. We encourage you to use
charts, graphs, photographs, and other graphic elements.
Current publishes only previously unpublished work. Your submission should include a statement indicating that the
manuscript has not been published elsewhere and that you are not concurrently submitting it to any other publication.
MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION AND FORMAT
We prefer copy and graphic submissions sent via e-mail, but a CD can be mailed to the Managing Editor. Please use
files compatible with Microsoft Word for Windows. Text should be left justified, single-spaced, and use a singlespace after all punctuation with a space between each paragraph. Remove tabs, columns, and other related formatting
to keep the format clean, since the designer will be laying out the text within the journal format. Adding an
introduction that is separate from the body of the text is appreciated, since the design lends itself to this format (see
past issues ofCurrentas samples). Also include two to three brief lines of biographical information, as you would like
it to appear at the end of your article. We will acknowledge receipt of manuscripts and then send out for peer review
The review process usually takes a minimum of three weeks, and authors are notified of the outcome as quickly as
possible. Authors receive three printed copies of the issue in which their submission appears.
The average length of an article is 1,500 to 3,000 words. We will consider somewhat longer or shorter manuscripts
Your article should include your name, title, address, telephone number, and email address.
Please note: the author can suggest location or placement of graphic elements, (i.e. reference to figures, charts
photographs, etc.) within the article by denoting location of graphics in brackets. But, once the article and graphics are
released to the Managing Editor, it is the Managing Editors responsibility to review the layout and design.
GRAPHIC SUBMISSION AND FORMAT
We prefer photographs and other graphics to be sent in a high resolution, digital format (360 dpi or higher, 3 x 3 size
format), sent via email (send to [email protected]), or mailed and placed on a CD. Please do not send PDF files,
we prefer original InDesign files so the designer can manipulate the graphics and text within the graphics. Do no
embed photographs within Word files (quality is lost when graphics are placed within these files); please send all
graphic files as separate JPG or Tiff files. Graphic elements greatly enrich the articles as well as the issue. Please sendproper photo credits and captions for all graphic elements. The style ofCurrent includes captions for all graphic
elements.
We also encourage authors to include a Resources section within their article/activity that provides links to
websites, books, and/or curriculum.
Please note: Model release forms need to be signed by a parent/guardian for any photographs of minors.
