Defending Jacob by William Landay

This is much more than a legal thriller It is more than a story about an Assistant DA and his teen-age son Jacob It goes beyond the portrait of Jacobrsquos family in crisis It exceeds mere descrip-tions of the local judicial system It makes you wonder what actually happened at the crime

scene but primarily it poses questions that are troubling It asks the reader ldquoWhat would you do to defend your child What would you do if your genetic inheritance affected your childrsquos actions This novel reviews the time-worn dilemmas ldquoAre behaviors defined by

nature or nurturerdquo ldquoAre we masters of our own faterdquo

Jacob is fourteen and is implicated in a crime involving a classmate Andy Barber his father is the Assistant District Attorney who with wife Laurie mother of Jacob live in a suburban

New England town

Ethics parenting teenage problems the me-dia friendship marriage and justice all play a

role in this riveting story
