President’s Message
Hello Fellow Dolphin
Divers,
A month has already escaped
us in this new year and many
of you are planning where
you will dive next. If in your
adventures, you decide it
was a trip worth sharing,
please schedule some time to
present during one of the
upcoming general meetings.
We would love to hear what
you experienced.
As for club business, we
have started off the new year
strong. Thank you very
much to Mr Craig Brookey
for his assistance leading the
January meeting in my
absence. The board has
planned numerous events in
the upcoming months, so it
is important to watch the
calendar, email and website
for updates and your
participation.
Several members and their
guests participated in the
past AED/ First Aid/ CPR
and Rescue classes taught by
Mitch Evenson at Dolphin SCUBA. Thank you for your
participation and continued efforts to making diving
safer and being better prepared in the event of an
emergency.
During our February meeting, Jack Millard will be
presenting to the club in a non-formal manner techniques
used with the equipment the club own's and brings to its
events to familiarize yourself with it.
Did you know, we have already nearly filled the boat for
our next Channel Islands trip? Last report we have
already booked two thirds the spots. If you are
interested, place a deposit to reserve your space.
I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting!

President’s Day February 17th thru February 20th
Casini Ranch President’s Day Weekend (Friday the 17th to Monday the
20th) will be at Casini Ranch located on the beautiful
Russian River. We will plan on the usual for the
weekend. Please plan on sharing hors d'oeuvres both
Saturday and Sunday in the early afternoon. Currently, the
plan is to head into Bodega Bay (the Tides) Saturday
morning to purchase oysters - so bring those dollar
bills…(last year they were about $1.25/oyster) for BBQ'd
oysters. We will have our potluck dinner on Sunday night.
I will being making the traditional clam chowder to
contribute to that night’s potluck dinner; please plan on
bringing your own favorite dish to share at the potluck. It
is always a fun and relaxing weekend and we look forward
to spending time with those of you who can join us.
Fred and I have reservations and will be in site C13 this
year. I checked with the reservation desk and there are
other sites around us that are currently open. There were
still some spots in the A row, B row and C row. There
were also quite a few spots in the F row…even though we
may not be right together, the rows are pretty close to each
other and easy for us to get together at a central camp site.
Some members have already made reservations so call
soon to get your spot. If you plan on going we suggest
you make your own reservations soon. Let them know you
are with the Dolphin Dive Club and want a spot as close as
possible to C13. You can make your reservations via
phone at 1 (800) 451-8400 daily between 8 and 4 PM. Or
you can make your reservations on line at:
https://v3.bookyoursite.com/casini/reservation.
If you need any additional information, please visit
Casini’s website at: http://www.casiniranch.com/index.php
We are looking forward to seeing those of you who can
join us!! ~Fred and Lisa Knoles
SAFETY
Tom Oja, DDS Safety Officer
Safety Message and Local Dives: Mistakes. Yea we all make them and they generally cause
a problem of some type. So here is my question for you.
How long does it take for you to admit you have made a
mistake?
Why you ask would I ask such a question. Here is why.
We all know when we are making a questionable
decision. We all know when we are taking a risk. But
what about when you make a mistake. How long till you
realize it. I ask this question because once you realize
that you have made a mistake or even suspect you have
you can now move forward towards resolving the
problem.
So using diving as an example. No I am not referring to
learning to dive as a mistake but as an example. Let say
you are doing a shore dive and realize that you are not
exactly where you planned to be. That nice square
pattern you planned on diving took you further around
the corner then you planned. Guess what now you are
running out of water and getting thrown against the
rocks.
What do you do. Try and crawl out on the rocks or turn
around and go back the way you came. Good question.
In this case, you were safe up till now. So, that makes
me think that if you just turn around and go back the
way you came you will get back to a safer place.
When do you turn around? How about before you are
low on air. Better yet, when you have used about ⅓ of
your air. Then if you have to turn back again… you still
have air. What does that do. Keeps you alive and…
You are drastically less stressed because you don’t have
to worry about how much air you have left. You
planned on having excessive amounts of air available.
And now you still have enough. Yea it is a little
wasteful but it is a whole lot safer and your odds of
coming home are significantly better.
----
Upcoming Dives.
I have a few people who really want to spend time in a
pool somewhere nearby. I had hoped to do this in
January, but that is not going to happen. So, I need your
help. I need to know that you also want some practice
time in a pool. Please email or contact me, if you have
not already done so, so I know you are interested. We
will try this again in either late February or March.
Probably either a Friday evening or over the weekend.
Once it warms up a bit we will again resume local lake
dives too. I am open for suggestions on locations there
too.
Thank you to all my safe dive buddies out there. ~Tom
Channel Islands 2017 There are 15 12 spaces left on our 2017 Channel Islands dive
trip on the Conception. This trip will again be for 4 days from
Sunday, July 23 to Wednesday, July 26. This year we will
head back to Catalina for the warmer water and (hopefully)
the Giant Black Seabass and dive sites at Ship Rock and
Farnsworth Banks. There are always a few hunters and
photographers/videographers on our trips, but this is a trip for
everyone so we will go where the conditions are best for
general diving.
Member cost is still only $625.00. This annual trip is our
biggest fun(d) raiser for the year and an excellent time for
great diving and to get to know all your Dolphin buddies a
little better. Bottom time is limited only by your nitrogen
loading and how many times you want to dive. If you are a
new diver this is probably the best way for you to hone your
skills while diving with your more experienced club buddies.
The scenery along the islands is so beautiful we are often
joined by non-diving family members. The crew takes
excellent care of us and it is unbelievable how good the food
is coming from the tiny galley.
You can make deposits, payments or payoffs any time, but
hurry because space is limited. I’ll tell you more at the
meetings and in the “Bubbles”. When you sign up I’ll also
send you information about the specifics of the trip and what
you can expect. You can check the club website for previous
trip reports in our archived Bubbles. Jack Millard

EASTER EGG HUNT Saturday March 25
Our annual Underwater Easter Egg Hunt in Monterey will be on Saturday, March 25. As always we’ll have lots of GREAT prizes, one for every egg and some for our raffle too! The hunt area will be at the west end of San Carlos Beach, opposite the breakwater and down the stairs from the restrooms. Everyone will need to be on the beach between 9:00 and 9:30 a.m. to sign in and receive a dive orientation. The area of the hunt will be cordoned off underwater with yellow rope and there will be floats on the surface marking the area from above. Boats may be moored outside of the hunt area BUT ALL contestants must remain ON THE SURFACE until the whistle is blown. At 10:00 sharp we will blow a whistle to signal the start of the event, at which time you should descend. If you are floating over the hunt area and descend when you hear the whistle you are almost assured of finding an egg. If you have not yet reached the hunt area when the whistle is blown the easy ones will be already found and you will have to work much harder to find them. There are usually egg numbers that are not found so don’t give up too early! There will be extra weights and a safety diver in a boat, anchored in the center of the area with a safety diver. We will have children’s activities organized on the beach while parents are searching for their eggs underwater. If you, or someone you know, would be willing to help with the children’s activities please let us know. Prizes for the adults and children will be awarded at the evening buffet and awards ceremony at Crazy Horse Restaurant, located above the Bay Park Hotel, near Hwy
101 & Munras Avenue. The menu selections will be the same as last year with tri-tip, halibut, hot vegetables, soft drinks, the Crazy Horse signature salad bar, and even Chocolate mousse for desert. Social hour will start at 5:00 followed by dinner at 6:00 p.m. and the prize presentations
immediately after dinner. Be sure to
bring money for some GREAT raffle prizes! I will post the sign-up form on our web site and send a map and directions in an e-mail to everyone who has signed up for this event. If you do not have access to the internet, or a printer, the forms will also be available at the January, February and March general meetings. Even though our cost has gone up for the meals the club is subsidizing the increase to keep your member cost the same. There are many motels and campgrounds in the area. Here are a few contact numbers for some places to stay: BAY PARK HOTEL 800-338-3564 We have a group rate of $99.00/night at Bay Park Hotel, regularly $130.00. Ask for our club rate.
