RETIREMENT:SECURE YOUR FINANCIAL FUTURE
This past spring and summer, retirement series were held
in Woodbury, Monona, Dickinson and Plymouth counties
in Regions 1 & 5. Sponsorships were from Community
Credit Union, Security National Bank, Telco-triad and NW
Iowa Credit Union as well as local ISU Extension and
Outreach Councils. with additional retirement programs.
Many people who think they're prepared for retirement
learn the hard way that they weren't ready. Individuals who
attended our programs stated that they did not realize you
must pay tax on Social security and that they thought
Medicare was free—when in fact, you do have to pay. Our
participants learned that eyes, ears and teeth are not
covered by Medicare. You have to pay taxes on your
Social Security, traditional IRA's, IPERS, annuities and
other pension plans.
Another participant expressed "I have been through
bankruptcy. I will continue on the retirement road." Their
impact was that debt occurred, then bankruptcy, now they
are looking forward to a financially secure future as they
look toward retirement. They were realizing that they could
learn from their past mistakes and move forward. (cont’d)
