The annual installation of the Cupertino
Chamber Board Officers and Board Members
was held on Wednesday, January 5th, 2012.
New Mayor Mark Santoro recognized the
Chambers important role in the community and
did the honors of installing John Zirelli as the
Chambers 2012 President.
I would like to thank Paula Davis for serving
as the Chamber President in 2011 and her
generous contributions of time to staff and the
members during this past year, said Zirelli.

2012 Installation of Chamber Officers and Board Member
The Cupertino Chamber of Commerce in
cooperation with the City of Cupertino and the
Rotary Club of Cupertino will host its annual
State of the City Address featuring Mayor Mark
Santoro, on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 from
11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Quinlan Commu-
nity Center, 10185 N. Stelling Rd., Cupertino.
The cost of the luncheon is $25, and
reservations are recommended due to limited
seating availability. The reservation form is found
on Page 3.
The program will also include presentations
of Public Safety Officer of the Year Awards.
These annual awards recognize public safety
officers for making a difference. The recipients of
the awards are selected by the Santa Clara
County Fire Department and Santa Clara County
Sheriffs Department.
Mayor Mark Santoro will talk about the
financial health and recent accomplishments of
the city and some of the steps that the city
taking to improve resident and business acce
to services and information.

The California Chamber of Commerce
released a list of new employment laws sched-
uled to take effect in 2012 or earlier that will have
an impact on businesses in California. The entirelist can also be viewed at, www.calchamber.com/
newlaws2012.
In addition to the new employment laws, an
order by the National Labor Relations Board
(NLRB) is also impacting businesses in Califor-
nia. By January 31, 2012, most private-sector
employers must begin displaying an 11x17
poster that provides information to their employ-
ees about unionizing and their right to strike.
Administrative Penalties: AB 240 allows an
employee that alleges a minimum wage violation

PresidentsMessageI would like to thank Cupertino Chamber of
Commerce members for electing me as your
president for 2012. 2011 was a successful year,
and I believe 2012 and the Year of the Dragon will
be another year the chamber will excel. The
chamber staff and board of directors look forward to
working with our members, the City of Cupertino
and the business community this year.
The chamber is excited about new buildingprojects that are currently under construction and
will be opening in 2012: The Crossroads Plaza at
De Anza and Stevens Creek Blvd with new anchor
tenant, TJ Maxx/Home Goods, the new hotel by Shashi Development Corporation
at De Anza Blvd and Alves and the Western Athletic Club on the corner of Wolfe
and Stevens Creek Blvd in Vallco Mall.
On January 25th in partnership with the City of Cupertino and Cupertino
Rotary , Mayor Mark Santoro will give the 2012 State of the City Address. At this
event, the mayor will highlight milestones achieved in 2011 and visions of what is
in store for the year. Also at the State of the City luncheon, employees from Santa
Clara County sheriff and fire departments will be presented with achievement
awards who help keep the residents and business in Cupertino safe.
February 17th is our annual Lunar New Year lunch at the Dynasty Restaurant
in Vallco Mall. The Year of the Dragon lunch is hosted by the Chambers Asian
American Business Council. Please make your reservations early as this popular
event sells out fast. You will not want to miss this 7 course Chinese feast.
March 24th is our annual Star Awards Gala held at the Cypress Hotel. This
event recognizes businesses and citizens whose contributions have made a
significant impact to the Cupertino Community. This years recipients are: Co -
Citizens of the year: Dolly Sandoval and Tom Dyer; Small Business of the Year:
Picchetti Winery; Medium Business of the Year: Hobees Restaurant; Large
Business of the Year: KRTY/KLIV Broadcasting
Please mark your calendars for our upcoming events and monthly mixers held
on the second Wednesday of each month. These events are great opportunities for
members to network with local businesses, city staff and our council members. I
look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events.

Cupertino residents are encouraged to apply for
City Commissions with openings in January 2011. On
January 24 and 25 beginning at 6 pm, the City Coun-
cil will interview applicants for these groups:
Bicycle Pedestrian Commission; Fine Arts Commis-
sion; Housing Commission; Library Commission;
Parks & Recreation; Planning Commission; Technolo-
gy, Information, and Communications Commission.
Commissioners are interviewed and appointed by
the City Council, and may serve a total of two consec-
utive 4-year terms. All meetings are open to the pub-
lic.
*Update* Notice is hereby given that the City of Cu-
pertino is accepting applications for one unscheduled
vacancy on the Library Commission. The vacancy
occurred when Commissioner Ron Miller resigned.
The term of this unscheduled vacancy expires in Jan-
uary of 2013. The commission consists of five mem-
bers appointed by the Council to four-year terms.

Kiddie Academy of Cupertinofamilies have spent the last the last
few months collecting un-opened
toys for the San Jose Childrens
Shelter located at 4455 Union
Avenue.
Kiddie Academy of Cupertino
students, Infant to School Age,
decided to help give back to the
community by collecting new toys
for children, after the 4 Year Old
Teacher, Ms. Kathy, was discussing
community service projects to the
children in her class.

Classroom stood at the
entry of Kiddie Academy
for three months. Ms.
Angie, the director, said
each morning you could
hear the children remind
their parents we have to
get a new toy for the
shelter.
The day before
Christmas Eve the school donated
the toys to the shelter, they had
collected over $400.00 worth oftoys. Ms. Angie said they did such a
phenomenal job in the way the
children wanted to give back to their
community, but specifically to
children who were their age. We are
so proud and very grateful to all of
our Kiddie Academy families in our
accomplishment together.

2012 Board Installation

to recover liquidated damages pursuant to anycomplaint brought before the Division of Labor
Standards Enforcement (DLSE). This new law
would allow the Labor Commissioner to also
award such damages. Under the new liquidated
damages provision, the employee would be
entitled to recover an amount equal to the wages
unlawfully unpaid, plus interest.
E-Verify: AB 1236 allows employers to continue
to choose to use E-Verify, but prohibits California
state agencies and local governments from
passing mandates that require employers to use
E-Verify. Several cities in California passed local
ordinances requiring the use of E-Verify in certain
circumstances. This new law prohibits such stateor local mandates, unless required by federal law
or as a condition of receiving federal funds.
Gender Expression: AB 887 amends the Fair
Employment and Housing Act to further define
"gender" to include both gender identity and
"gender expression," as defined by the new law,
and to make clear that discrimination on either
basis is prohibited
Insurance Non-Discrimination Act: SB 757
prevents employers that operate in multiple states
from discriminating against same-sex couples by
not providing the same insurance coverage for
domestic partners as they do for spouses.
Notice of Pay Details: AB 469 requires employ-
ers to provide nonexempt employees, at the time
of hire, a notice that specifies: 1) The rate of payand the basis, whether hourly, salary, piece
commission or otherwise, including any overtime
rate; 2) Allowances, if any, claimed as part of the
minimum wage, including meal and lodging
allowances; 3) The regular pay day designated by
the employer as required under the Labor Code;
4) The name of the employer, including any
doing business as names; 5) The physical
address of the employers main office or principal
place of business and any mailing address, if
different; 6) The telephone of the employer; and
7) The name, address and telephone number of
the employers workers compensation carrier.
Pregnancy Disability Leave: SB 299 requires all
employers with five or more employees to
continue to maintain and pay for health coverage
under a group health plan for an eligible female
employee who takes Pregnancy Disability Leave
(PDL) up to a maximum of four months in a 12-
month period.
State Contracts: Gender or Sexual Orientation
Discrimination: SB 117 outlaws the state of
California from entering into contracts of more
than $100,000 with companies that discriminate
against the employees on the basis of gender or
sexual orientation with regard to benefits.
Wage Penalties: AB 551 increases the maxim
penalty from $50 to $200 per calendar day f
each worker paid less than the determin
prevailing wage and increases the minimupenalty from $10 to $40 per day for violations

Rashel Yadegari is the branch manager of First

Meet Mayor MarkOn January 9, 2012, the
Santa Clara Valley Transporta-
tion Authority (VTA) will be intro-
ducing new express buses that
are sure to transform your com-
mute from a stress-filled burden
to a comfortable, convenientand hassle-free ride. VTA will
begin operating new diesel-
electric hybrid commuter buses
designed specifically for VTAs
Express Bus Service. These
new buses are outfitted to better
accommodate longer commutes
and feature amenities such as
high-back seats, free on-board
Wi-Fi, luggage racks, footrests
and reading lights.
The new coaches will oper-
ate on VTA Express Lines 102,
103, 120, 121, 122, 182 and
183. Express Line 183 is new to
VTA and will travel from Aborn
& White Road to Fremont BART
serving Evergreen and East
San Jose area residents. Ex-
press Bus Line 120 will also
offer extended routing from
Fremont BART to the Shoreline
area in Mountain View.
