Principal’s
Message
Farewell Year 12
As we make final preparations for
our Year 12 Graduation
Ceremony, I would like to take
this opportunity to thank all Year
12 students and families for their
exceptional contribution to
Cumberland High School over the
past six years.
As I watched all of our Year 12
students grace the Curzon Hall
venue for their Year 12 formal
last night, I felt truly privileged to
have shared the schooling
experience with these charming
and elegant individuals and seen
them blossom into dignified and
accomplished citizens. What has
also impressed from this cohort is
the commitment to others and
their community-minded spirit.
I am very excited about the future
of each individual student and
hope, in years to come, that they
visit the Cumberland High School
grounds – always smiling and
with fond memories of those
relationships and experiences
that helped them carve out a very
bright future.
MAD 2016
Our MAD night provided again a
spectacular demonstration of the
talents of our Cumberland High
School students. We enjoyed the
artworks of our creative students
and musical talents of our concert
band, rock bands, musical
ensemble and vocal ensemble
groups. Congratulations to the
fabulous Mr Andrews, Ms Son,
Ms Kitson and Ms Roots for their
wonderful work together with
our Hip Hop choreographer,
Hernan Yoia who had our
students perform together with
Burnside Public School for the
first time! Congratulations to all
students involved for the
splendid night of entertainment!
Congratulations
Congratulations to Rim Manafikhi
(Year 11) who received the
prestigious Lions VET Award for
her outstanding achievements in
Hospitality.
Congratulations also to our
exceptional School Captains, Luke
Salt and Leonida Najdovska who
were the recipients of the
Minister’s Award for Excellence at
Parliament House on Tuesday 20
September. The Honourable MP
Piccoli acknowledged our school
leaders for their exemplary
leadership qualities and
contribution to our school and the
broader community.
Have a wonderful and restful
break and we look forward to
another enriching term,
commencing Monday 10 October.

MAD 2016
Every year in early September,
the Faculty of Arts goes a little
MAD! This year was
Cumberland’s 10th MAD and next
year we will be looking back on
10 years of MAD.
MAD is our annual Creative Arts
showcase. Over 150 students
took part this year. We featured
numerous soloists (from Years
7-12) and all of our ensembles.
This included: Concert Band,
MAD Choir, Vocal Ensemble,
String Ensemble, Stage Band,
Junior Rock Band, Rock Band,
Girls’ Rock Band and Senior
Rock Band. We were thrilled to
have our Hip-Hop dance group
perform! This was a combined
item with the dancers from
Burnside Public School.
The MAD Choir (which was open
to all Year 7-8 students) sang
everything from 80s Rock to
Opera. Our amazing stage crew
ran the sound, lights and staging
elements. A huge ‘thank you’
goes to Mr. Tony Moffatt who
donated his time and lent us
some amazing equipment to
make our show look even better.
The Hospitality team served up
delicious hot drinks and our
wonderful P&C served food and
refreshments during the
intermission.
Congratulations to the staff and
students who made MAD2016
such a big success! We look
forward to seeing you all next
year.

Visual Arts
Our many talented artists in Visual
Arts were hard at work this year
creating some wonderful and
expressive artworks in
printmaking, drawing, painting
and mixed media. They explored
ideas from their world and the
world of artists, learning not only
some new techniques but different
ways to represent the world
through their art.
Shown are a selection of artworks
from some of our talented HSC and
Visual Arts students in Year 7,
Year 8 and Year 9.

Anpachi Junior High School visit 2016
On August 4th, a group of students and teachers from
Anpachi Junior High School in Japan visited our school to
exchange knowledge and experience of both Australian
and Japanese schools and culture.
Our year 9 Japanese class assisted with the visit
throughout the whole day and were excellent buddies for
our Japanese visitors. They were able to spend time
together during recess, lunch as well as joining in a
normal classroom and meeting other Cumberland
students.
Our Japanese visitors also showed us a series of
performances and demonstration of various aspects of
the Japanese culture such as calligraphy writing, origami
and kirigami (folding and cutting of paper), traditional
Japanese dancing and martial arts. All Year 7 classes and
Year 11 Preliminary Japanese beginners’ students were
able to learn and participate in the cultural activities.
We received great feedback from our visitors and
congratulations to all students and staff for assisting with
this memorable cross-cultural experience.

Drama Night 2016
The 2016 Drama Night was
another wonderful evening for
our talented students to
showcase their talent and hard
work. With performances from
the HSC Drama class, Year 10
Drama, and Drama Club, this year
proved once again that our
students are creative, driven
individuals who consistently
strive to be a part of the
community. Theatre is a vital
part of community and these
students who have written
original pieces and performed
solo, and as ensembles, have
demonstrated their humanity
and connectedness to their
community at its best. These
students give up their time to
create and rehearse and finally
perform in front of an invited
audience.
As the eighth performance
evening I have run here at
Cumberland I am happy to
announce that although our
nights do not get any bigger, they
constantly improve and the
students are forever surprising
me with their enthusiasm and
drive. I would like to thank these
great young performers as well
as the backstage, sound and
lighting crew for their incredible
efforts, without which this
evening would not happen.
Thank you also to the parents
and teachers who supported the
event.

2016 Australian National
Chemistry Quiz
Over 120000 students from 1463
schools of 17 countries took part
in this year's Chemistry Quiz.
Among thirty-eight Years 11 & 12
students from Cumberland High
School sat the Quiz on 21th July
2016, nineteen of them were
awarded Certificates of Merit.
Our Year 11 students also
achieved results above the
national average for Australia.
It is hoped that the Quiz will
interest students in the further
study of Chemistry and will
indicate to students the
important role Chemistry has to
play in our society. Other
students who like to share the
success should participate in the
2017 Australian National
Chemistry Quiz on 1 August
2017.
Congratulations go to the
students listed below.

Library News and
New Reading Lists
Many high school students spend
much less time reading than they
did during primary school years.
Sadly, this has led to a decline in
literacy standards. There are just
so many distractions to temp our
teens away from reading a good
book. So here are 5 tips to
encourage your students to keep
on reading in their high school
years.
2. Provide books that your student will enjoy reading. Finding the right book is more difficult in High school years as students become more particular about the books that they like to read. Books that are childish in content may no longer engage a teen reader. To assist with this challenge your school library has created suggested reading lists for all years in stages 4 and 5 and a special gifted and talented reading list with books that may appeal to the advanced reader. These reading lists are found on the Oliver Library webpage accessed via the student portal.
3. Model reading by reading a
good book yourself and
discussing what you read with
your son or daughter. Another
option is for you to read the
book that your student is
reading so that you may
engage in conversation about
the book.
4. Encourage the reading of non-
fiction books. Provide books
about the sport or hobby that
interests your student.
5. Visit the local library.
Parramatta library and its
branch libraries provide many
physical and online resources.
Parramatta library has a
brilliant collection of e-books
for members to download
onto reading devices. The
library provides access to
online videos, magazines,
encyclopaedias and journal
articles. There is also a free
online homework help service
where university students will
provide tutoring from 3pm to
10pm Sunday to Friday.
1. Set aside some time just for
reading. Reading is a great
way to wind down before
going to bed. Many studies
have shown that better sleep
is achieved if people have a
non-screen time before
attempting to sleep. Another
suggestion is to have one day a
week with minimal screens as
this allows students to focus
on other pursuits such as
sport, exercise, cooking and
reading. In my home we have
a “NO TECH TUESDAY” for my
high school student.
