What is the program about?

The group will partner with The Vijiji Foundation, a local non-profit organization to learn the principles and practices of Community Based Research and to work alongside community members to develop and implement a variety of sustainable VolunTourism programs in bio-intensive agriculture and the environment, education and English-language literacy, and sustainable community development.

Coursework ANTH 409: Community-Based Research

The goal of CBR is to develop a process and a product that are useful to the community in creating positive social change

ANTH 490: Anthropological Perspectives on Voluntourism examines the potential and

pitfalls of Voluntourism through

both theoretical and applied

perspectives

Activities & ExcursionsOur days will be a mixture of classroom and “hands-on” experience, with the majority of the time spent working directly with the local Meru people.

Weekends are free to explore the many nearby attractions and will include a number of day trips to places such as Lake Manyara National Park, Tarangire National Park, Crater Lake Challa, and Maasai territory.

Activities & ExcursionsOptional additional week at the end for a wildlife and culture safari to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Olduvai Gorge and the villages of the Datoga, Iraqw and Hadza of the Lake Eyasi region (if you choose this option, there is an additional cost)

AccommodationsWe will live and work in Nguruma Village, an agricultural community of about 4000 people situated on the lush, lower slopes of Mount Meru, just 10km east of Arusha, the largest city in the area.
