CULTURE / REMIX / JAM

A Tate Digital Learning Project

First, what is digital literacy?…and how can we use it to empower?

Coding, webmaking, software development… how can these be connected to the arts?

And how can open source methods inspire web users to become web creators?

It all started with a brainstorm

And then used Xray Goggles, Mozilla’s open source tool

Which lead to a hands-on training…

And a public workshop at the Tate launch party

using Object Oriented Programming approaches

Followed by remixable teaching resources

And a lot of sharing our process in the open!

Then Mozilla Festival Art of Web, a new collaboration

Involving many groups interested in digital making

Where we were able to work with new kinds of audiences…

To produce a variety of creative pieces

all sharing different voices, ideas and experiences.

And now, we are bringing together audience needs

While continuing to use + remix open source methods

To help audiences become more digitally literate, merging the gallery’s collections and data in creative new ways.

Our continuing question: How can we remix open source methods to promote digital literacy in the arts?
