It is the responsibility of the City to provide a safe work environment. While each agency is responsible for its own safety efforts we are all united in basing our programs and systems on one common safety philosophy. The philosophy and its success is the prevention of workplace injuries is grounded in the following 3 fundamental principles: 1. the City holds safety as the highest core value, 2) all city employees are responsible and accountable for preventing injuries, 3) the city will extend its safety efforts beyond the workplace.Managements fundamental safety responsibilities include leading the safety effort in a sustained and consistent way, and training employees to work safely. Safety shall be a core personal value and is a key measure in the assessment of individual performance.Employees roles The citys employees play a significant role in the success of its safety programs. The employees fundamental safety responsibilities include participating actively in training, identifying and alerting others to potential hazards, and following procedures. The focus is to work together to address issues through creative and productive problem solving.

By adopting this philosophy the foundation is laid for effective safety programs, which contribute to making the City of Columbus the best city in the nation in which to live, work and raise a family.Executive Order 2005-02. The purpose of the Occupational Safety and Health Programs Section (OSHP) within the Dept. of HR is to reduce the incidence of occupational injuries and diseases, protect employees against hazards and risk of hazards and control identified hazardsEmployees are the most important asset and valuable resourcePer Idaho H&S Program, Every year, about six million people get hurt at work. And more than 400,000 are just like you...they work in offices. This Trainer's Toolkit shows how working in an office is a lot like being in the jungle the dangers are hidden and subtle. Idaho H&S program says: Studies show that over one-fourth of office injuries are caused by falls. One-third of the falls incurred by women are due to wearing high heels, which make falls more likely. Consider wearing lower, wider heels.Other things Cant prevent recurrence or get folks to work if incident is unknown. Challenge individual that collects reports to turn them around in a timely manner set a time frame.Make sure safety committees are meeting that all dept. are represented AND attending regularly. Minutes are published, corrective action is designed, tracked with timeframe and responsible party. Prevent being a gripe session.Hazard recognition reporting program by employees make sure follow-up is make, someone do audits to assure hazards are eliminated.

Safety Training each job category should have minimum training established with periodic refresher. How current is it?Track incidents, report things that are measured, reported are the things that get attention.Enforcement we often hesitate to discipline injured workers, but if procedures were violated we need to reinforce the need.New projects/purchases office equipment better designed? Office arrangements safe for design, egress, fire?
