The popular cultural walk through the town of Telfs takes you

past captivating frescoes, artistically elaborate fountains

with fascinating stories behind their origins and historically

interesting buildings. Starting point is the town hall (Rathaus)

in the centre of Telfs.

1 . T O W N H A L L The former inn „zum Steinbock“, which used also to contain a beer brewery, was built in 1706. In 1939/40, the town hall was rebuilt. The arms of various Tyrolean communities and the carved figural separating posts of Johannes Obleitner decorate the two oriel windows on the side. The wedding and assembly hall remains of the interior, which Obleitner also designed, and into which the carvings of the entrance door of the council chamber that was canceled in 1982 were built. The southern windows were designed in 1997 with glass works of Reinhold Waldhart. On the north side of the building there is a notewor-thy Gothic oriel window.

2 . C O U N C I L C H A M B E R The popular event centre in the heart of Telfs was given a new face in 2008 with a striking glass-aluminum construction. The council chamber is the dominant building in the extensive and interestingly configured Eduard-Wallnöfer-Platz. The „piazza“ named after a former Telfs governor is a popular meeting place.

3 . F A S N A C H T S C U L P T U R EA few steps from there stands a 3.5 metre tall bronze sculpture of the „lantern-bearer“, one of the main figures of Telfs’ Fasnacht. On the edge of the circular basin are 16 bronze reliefs installed by Professor Martin Gundolf. They depict the various groups of Telfs’ “Schleicherlaufen“, a unique and centuries-old Tyrolean Fasnacht custom. Whoever takes the time to look closely will see the se-quence of the entire Fasnacht procession, which begins with the rising of the sun. Thereafter follows the heralds, the four seasons, the wild beasts, the lurkers, the bears, “Laninger” and many more.

5 . C H R I S T O P H O R U S F R E S C O The eastern face of „Hotel Munde“ is decorated with the fresco of St. Christopher by Professor Andreas Einberger. St. Christopher is one of the 14 Auxiliary Saints and is frequently depicted. It is said that whoever sees him will not die in sin.

6 . D O L L I N G E R H A U SIt is one of the oldest buildings in Telfs. In earlier times there was also a coppersmith accommodated here. Of note are the „Rauchkuchl“, the arched portals and the artistic wooden gable construction. In the south-west corner stands a bust of Josef Schöpf. The painter (1745-1882), born in Telfs, is one of the more significant Tyrolean artists in the epoch of rococo and classicism.

7 . F O U N T A I N M A R I A - I M M A C U L A T AThe fountain originates from the 19th century. Maria is portrayed here as the Mother of God, untainted by Original Sin. Her attributes include the lily as the symbol of purity, the Serpent of Paradise, the globe as well as the twelve stars that shine around her head. Both houses behind the well are decorated by interesting facade paintings. Of note is the large three-kings fresco on the savings bank, which however is a copy. The original was transferred to the Franciscan church in order to protect the monument.

4 . J O S E F F O U N T A I N The fountain with the statue of St. Joseph was founded in the 18th century. The beautiful wooden sculpture is one of many fountain figures that in earlier times could be found every-where in the „fountain village“ of Telfs. Many of these figures have been preserved; we will encounter some of them on our tour.

9 . Z E I S E L E - H A U S : D I S T I L L E R Y K R A N E W I T T E RThe Zeisele-Haus originates from the 16th century. „Zeisele“ (Tyrolean for „siskin“) is itself an old Telfsian house name. Above the arched doorway is a baroque sandstone relief from the time of 1700, which shows the Mother of God with the Christ Child. Both frescoes depicting saints on the facade are worth seeing. The distillery Kranewitter has for years been an insider‘s tip among those who value real quality with their brandy. Just as impressive and least as old as the Zeisele-Haus is the Zobl-Haus, located to its left. Both buildings are equipped with imposing wooden gable constructions and contain inside ancient beam ceilings and other crafted treasures from earlier times.

8 . F A S N A C H T & L O C A L H I S T O R Y M U S E U M „ N O A F L H A U S “ In 2001, in the renovated „Noaflhaus“ („Noafl“ was the house name of an earlier owner), a museum and cultural centre was established on 845 square metres of floor space, which includes the Fasnacht and local history museum, the public library, a chronicler library and an event hall. The glazed wooden construction in the attic and the facade with plaster fragments and a modern mosaic combine with the decorative gables and wall paintings of the old neighbouring buildings. The Gothic pointed arch on the frontage, the vault inside, and

the masonry work displayed in several locations, are relics of the historical structural fabric.A central theme of the museum in the Noaflhaus is the impressive and life-like presentation of Telfs’ previously mentioned Fasnacht, the Schleicherlaufen. Additionally, the museum provides insights into Telfs’ artistic production in the past and the present, into the craft and industrial history of the town, into farm and religious life, and many other aspects. The contemporary history of the former industrial town of Telfs is also displayed in pictures.

1 1 . P A R I S H C H U R C H P E T E R & P A U LThe parish church in Telfs, Peter and Paul, is a monumen-tal, neo-romantic basilica with three naves and two facade towers. It is relatively young and was built between 1859 and 1863 using parts of the previous building. During the last renovation in the beginning of the 1980s, some of the original frescoes were uncovered. The wall and altar paintings depict, in the pathetic style of the 19th century, scenes from the lives of Peter and Paul and other saints. Worth mentioning are also the Pirchner Organ in the loft and the beautiful baroque figure of the local Telfs’ saint, Sebastian, in the right side altar. Every year, this statue is carried in a ceremonial procession through the town on the 20th of January – St. Sebastian‘s Day. Left from the entrance door can be seen the slightly raised remains of a wall fresco from the year 1570, with which the pious Telfs family preserved their memory. That this picture remains preserved may be attributed to the fact that during the reconstruction of the church, the tower of the earlier Gothic church was left standing and integrated

1 0 . G O O D S H E P H E R D F O U N T A I N The wooden sculpture from the 19th century depicts the motif of the „good shepherd“, known since early Christianity: Christ as a shepherd with sheep and crook. The stone trough was produced in 1898. The fountain is located at a fork into the picturesque Rosengasse, which leads north and is one of the oldest streets in Telfs. In Rosengasse, too, there are many centuries-old houses.

into the new building. Even when today‘s parish church essentially derives from the 19th century, Telfs remains a very old site for churches. The medieval origin of several Telfs churches and chapels is proven by documentation. In Telfs’ parish archive, there is a consecration document from the year 1113 - the oldest in northern Tyrol - even though it is not completely clear which church of this town the document is referring to.

1 2 . F R Ü H M E S S E R H A U SThe small „Mittelflurhaus“ with its four-sided oriel windows on the upper floor, Bundwerk gable and high-quality frescoes is a jewel of Telfs, full of cultural history and a beautiful example of the rural Tyrolean architecture of earlier centuries. The wall pictures on the gable side depict St. Peter as Pope, Johannes Nepomuk under a canopy, and on the western side the Annunciation of Maria by Josef Schöpf. The house once accommodated the „Frühmesser“ - an older priest who was responsible for the early morning mass - and was from time to time also a school house.

1 3 . F R A N C I S C A N M O N A S T E R Y & C H R U C HThe powerful complex of Telfs’ monastery is a plain, functional building of Franciscan simplicity. The monastery was built in the years 1703 to 1706, the monastery‘s Church of the Immac-ulate Conception from 1704 to 1706. The church is in essence built onto the monastery and faces north. The nave supports a steep gabled roof with a small bell tower. On the gable on the southern facade is a mosaic of Maria by Josef Pfefferle (1903/04). Inside the church, the side-chapel emerging from the nave stands out. The altar picture from the year 1710 displays the church‘s patron, Mary Immaculate, surrounded by four Franciscan saints, who symbolise the four continents that were known at that time. On the wall to the right can be seen the Three-Kings fresco, which was taken from the savings bank in Untermarktstraße in the course of the most recent renova-tion, and transfered to the monastery church. In the (unfortunately inaccessible) interior of the monas-tery, there is a cloister and an extensive garden with a gar-den-house, decorated by a series of frescoes about the life of St Francis. The monastery, originally intended for a much greater number, presently accommodates only a few brothers. The war memorial is attached to the right of the forecourt of the monastery church. It consists of a group of figures and bronze tablets made by Professor Andreas Einberger, which list the names of the fallen of Telfs from both world wars and earlier wars.

1 4 . V I L L A & B U S T A N D R E A S E I N B E R G E RProfessor Andreas Einberger (1878-1952) was an important Tyrolean artist. He was born in Kramsach in Lower Inn Valley (Unterinntal), but after his marriage with bourgeois Maria Pöschl of Telfs, in the year 1919 changed his permanent res-idence to Telfs, which became his home. As a painter, graphic artist, woodcutter and sculptor, he had his most fruitful years of productivity there. In the picturesque villa with its large fruit garden and light-flooded studio, he found an ideal place for his artistic development. Stylistically, Einberger stood in the Tyrolean artistic tradition of the early 20th century, which was shaped by the names Franz Defregger, Albin Egger-Lienz and Alfons Walde. The master became known above all by his inimitable oil portraits and his life-like depictions of animals. In the street in front of the villa, which in his honour was named Prof.-Andreas-Einberger-Straße, there also stands a bronze bust in memory of the artist.

1 5 . F A S N A C H T F I G U R E „ W I L D E R “As part of the repeatedly mentioned Schleicherlaufen, the traditional Fasnacht custom occurring only every five years, the „wild men“ play a special role for the Schleicher group as vigi-lantes. The fearful figures are encased in garments made from „tree beard“ - that is, tree lichen - and carry gnarled wooden masks. In the middle of the roundabout in Obermarkt-straße, a giant „wild man“ cast from aluminum sits enthroned. The figure was made by the sculptor Bernhard Dietl. When you go a few steps north from the roundabout where the „wild man“ sits enthroned, some important buildings from the industrial history of Telfs emerge. The multi-storey building to

the left of the street, which today accommodates, inter alia, a music school, is the oldest factory building in Telfs and stems from the 1830s. Opposite this to the right, a monumental, pa-latial complex rises on a hill - behind the more recent adminis-trative building. It is from the 1880s and was once the central factory for the textile producers Jenny & Schindler. Today the complex houses the company Thöni.

1 6 . S E B A S T I A N I F O U N T A I NAbove a round fountain basin stands a high-quality rococo bust of St. Sebastian, enthroned on a wooden column. In his hand he carrys an arrow - the weapon by which he was martyred. The statue comes from a lost baroque altar from the time around 1760. St. Sebastian is the patron saint of Telfs and is honoured every year on the 20th of January with a procession and a festive mass. This goes back to a promise from the plague year of 1634, in which the people of Telfs praised their guardian for his help and intercession with especial veneration.

1 7 . S C H L E I C H E R F O U N T A I NAnd once again we come across Telfs’ Fasnacht: The modern fountain figure, made by the Telfs artist Professor Heinrich Tilly, originated in the year 1960 and was made of Untersberg marble. It depicts a Schleicher from Telfs, who carries a sun motif on his tall, expansive hat. Tilly‘s early work, whose marked forms and angles make interesting light and shadow games possible, betrays the characteristic style of the artist, which is characterised by expressive power and dynamism and at the same time simplicity.

1 8 . F L O R I A N I F O U N T A I NSt. Florian is the guardian of the fire brigade and many professions that have to do with fire and water. Particularly in Tyrol, one often finds the popular saint in artistic or local depictions. Here too in the form of a dignified and lovingly restored fountain figure. According to legend, Florian died a martyr‘s death in the water for his Christian convictions: He was drowned. It was only in the 15th century that the tradition emerged that he had apparently saved a burning house through his prayer. It is in allusion to this that he has his status as the patron of firemen and his attributes - a water tub and a burning house.
