This form of criticism was established in 1964 in order to expand the literary range beyond traditional approaches.

It arose quite self-consciously in the 80s to provide a means of analysis of the rapidly expanding global culture.

A primary goal of this type of criticism is to understand the nature of social power reflected within the text.

Literature is judged according to its role or use in the daily life of a given culture.

It follows the somewhat familiar tone and style of other critical discipline.

Cultural studies critics are notorious for using literary jargon and its complexity in analyzing oherwise mundane properties within a piece.

They do not limit themselves to analyzing literary works, but also advertisements and other form of media.
