Something to read - Children need to play sport – Why is that? - Playing a Sport involves a huge time commitment and is often a logistical effort from the whole family, the player, the parents (aka drivers and number one supporters). Anyone who plays and or supports Sport tells us it is worth it. It is worth seeing the smiles on their child’s face. Children tell us that they play sport to have fun, to be with or to make friends and because they love to move but signing your child up for a team sport will do a lot more– it can arm them with some valuable skills they all use both on and off the field.

Sport NZ says: “Kiwi kids love sport and starting young will ensure they develop a life-long habit of being involved and active”. A habit that brings with it a multitude of benefits. The Physical benefits are obvious but, if we think about it, we can also add social and emotional benefits to that list. In a recent article on children in sport a Clinical psychologist says

“Skills such as commitment to training, being on time, encouraging your team mates and winning or losing graciously are all part of being a good team person, and skills kids will need to call on throughout their lives.” He says sport can also lead to friendships outside their school group which can be very valuable for kids, while also teaching kids how to work towards a common goal. The list of benefits is endless, he says, adding that team sports provide structure and routine and can give kids access to positive role models outside the immediate family, like coaches and managers. So What Sport will your child play?

JUST A REMINDER WE LOVE RECEIVING PHOTOS OF OUR CHILDREN BEING ACTIVE AND ENGAGED IN SPORT. Send them either via email at [email protected], or drop them to the school office to be displayed on the Sports Noticeboard.
