The Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA) is a non-collecting art museum located in the heart of downtown Richmond, VA. The building’s dramatic structural form of zinc and frosted glass serves as a flagship space for VCU’s #1 ranked public art school.

The first floor includes a 4,000 square foot gallery, café, bar and concept shop, which radiate from the ICA’s central forum and frame an outdoor garden. The first floor also features a state-of-the-art, 240-seat auditorium for film screenings, performances, lectures and other programs. The second floor includes two galleries and an adaptable “learning lab” for interactive engagement. It also includes a publicly-accessible terrace, featuring one of four green roofs on the facility. The third floor features a gallery with soaring, 33-foot-high walls and houses one of the administrative suites and the boardroom.

Incorporating many energy efficient and environmentally-conscious design elements, the project was designed to meet LEED® Gold certification standards.

This outdoor performance and event complex is capable of servicing more than 17,500 patrons and includes a vendor/festival area, recreational trails and other customer-friendly amenities. In addition to the back-of-house (stage-house) and loading dock, there are three outer buildings, two restroom facilities and a box office. Associated infrastructure encompassed access roadways and site utilities including power, water, sanitary sewer, drainage, and data/communications. The amphitheater project was a component of a larger community revitalization initiative for the western shore of Onondaga Lake, the Village of Solvay and Town of Geddes.
