The University of Georgia is pleased to host the 2020 joint annual conference of the Agriculture, Food, and Human Values Society and the American Society of Food Studies in May 2020. This conference will bring approximately 500 scholars to campus from an influential cross section of institutions and organizations across North America. This is the first time this conference is being held in the Southeast, and we have an exciting opportunity to showcase our commitment to environmental and socially sustainable food systems.

The 2020 conference theme, “Cultivating Connections: Exploring Entry Points Into Sustainable Food Systems,” is an invitation to envision a more sustainable and equitable future by critically engaging with the histories and legacies that have framed agricultural food landscapes over time. Cultivating connections means that we are active participants, called to dig in for the preparation of building fruitful relationships with one another to foster greater sustainability within the food system. The food system is an intricate web of social connections, with each node of the web shaping how food is regarded, how it’s grown, how it will be distributed, who will buy it, and what its overall significance is within communities. These elements provide entry points for conversation, reconciliation, and action toward building stronger, more sustainable connections within the food system. Participants are invited to engage in conversations about changes to the current agri-food paradigm to better represent and advocate for a more just and equitable food system – from farm to fork – that strengthens community viability, food security, and the sovereignty of all people.

Please join us in welcoming AFHVS/ASFS to Athens!

ABOUT THE ANNUAL MEETING AND CONFERENCE

Page 4: CULTIVATING CONNECTIONS AFHVS/ASFS

The University of Georgia, a land-grant and sea-grant university with statewide commitments and responsibilities, is the state’s oldest, most comprehensive, and most diversified institution of higher education. Its motto, “to teach, to serve, and to inquire into the nature of things,” reflects the University’s integral and unique role in the conservation and enhancement of the state’s and nation’s intellectual, cultural, and environmental heritage. For 234 years, UGA has been a catalyst for social change. The 762-acre Athens campus is a city-within-a-city of more than 35,000 students and over 10,000 employees.

The University is nestled in a historically agricultural region that primarily grew cotton and has transformed over the years into a bustling community of both residents and small, sustainable farms, with nearly a hundred small farms and gardens located in and around Athens who share a dedication to community, environment, health, as well as the environmental and social benefits of sustainable agriculture.

The UGA Sustainable Food Systems Initiative (SFSI), is an interdisciplinary group of faculty members from across campus whose express purpose is to provide opportunities to create an expanded network of scientists and practitioners from numerous universities, federal agencies, non-governmental orga-nizations and private sector partners in food systems work. SFSI members draw from the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences; Department of Health Policy and Management; Department of Geography; and Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communication.

We are working with additional UGA partners, including the Georgia Center for Con-tinuing Education & Hotel, UGA Office of Sustainability, Foodshed UGA, UGArden, UGA Campus Kitchen, UGA Cooperative Extension, UGA Special Collections Library, Grow It Know It. We further anticipate working with community partners, including the Athens Farmers Market, Athens Land Trust, and the Food Bank of NE Georgia. We look forward to showcasing Athens and surrounding com-munities as an epicenter for locally-sourced food, educational programs in sustainable agricultural practices, and opportunities for community involvement in the food and agricultural scene.

For more than twenty years, these two societies have worked together to hold a vibrant, cutting-edge meeting on campuses across North America. These meetings give seasoned researchers a glimpse into how the field is progressing, and allow young professionals an opportunity to meet their peers, develop their presentation skills, and learn about other campuses. Community partners meet with researchers so that research better responds to their needs. Tours, exhibits, sponsorships, and advertising in the program book are ways that the community can meaningfully connect with researchers. We also invite the community to participate in the conference events that are free and open to the public, and to participate in sessions as presenters.

ABOUT AFHVS & ASFS

The Agriculture, Food,& Human Values Society (AFHVS) is a profes-sional organization which provides an inter-national forum to engage in the cross-disci-plinary study of food, agriculture, and health, as well as an opportunity for examining the values that underlie various visions of food and agricultural systems. From a base of philosophers, sociologists, and anthropolo-gists, AFHVS has grown to include scientists, scholars, and practitioners in areas rang-ing from agricultural production and social science to nutrition policy and the human-ities. AFHVS encourages participation by the growing community of researchers and professionals exploring alternative visions of the food system from numerous perspectives and approaches, including local and regional food systems; alternative food movements; agricultural and food policies, agricultural sustainability, food justice, issues of local and global food security, and food sovereignty. The organization publishes the journal Agriculture and Human Values.

The Association for the Study of Food and Society (ASFS) was founded in 1985, with the goals of promoting the interdisciplinary study of food and society. It has continued that mission by holding annual meetings and working with Routledge Publishing, the organization produces the quarterly journal, Food, Culture and Society. Members explore the complex relationships among food, culture, and society from nu-merous disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences, as well as in the world of food beyond the academy. ASFS encourag-es vigorous debate on a wide range of topics, such as cross-cultural perspectives on eating behaviors, gender and the food system, rec-ipes, cookbooks, and menu as texts, politics of the family meal, malnutrition, hunger, and food security, comparative food history, and the political economy of the global food sys-tem.

The program will be available on the conference website before and after the conference, and hard copies will be made available to all attendees for a small additional fee. Recognizing that many participants will not opt into receiving a hard copy conference program, we will in-clude sponsorship flyers in the conference folders.
