Mission and Objectives

CENTRAL UNIVERSITY OF GUJARAT

Established by Parliament of India through the Central Universities Act (2009), Central University of Gujarat

(CUG) considers its main objectives to be dissemination and advancement of knowledge creation and

sharing. The University is committed to make special provisions for integrated and interdisciplinary courses,

to educate and train human resources for the country's development, to initiate appropriate measures for

promoting innovation in teaching and learning and to pay special attention to improve the social and

economic conditions and welfare of the people, especially pertaining to their intellectual, academic and

cultural development.

Vision

The vision of CUG is to establish itself as a centre of excellence with social commitment by integrating

modern, scientific and technological knowledge and skills with the basic human ethos and values. The

University shall set forth a model in teaching, research and personality development and create skilled

human resource with a sense of responsiveness towards society, the country and the world at large.

Mission

The mission of CUG is to provide access to quality education and create opportunities for encouraging

students to effectively engage with emerging innovations and technological challenges, international

competitiveness and leadership in thought as well as in action. CUG is also conscious of the importance of

developing entrepreneurial and scholastic abilities for creation of knowledge, wealth and prosperity for the

Objectives

The objectives of CUG are:

Dissemination and advancement of knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities in

various branches of learning.

Making special provisions for integrated courses in humanities, social sciences, science and technology

Taking appropriate measures for promoting innovations in teaching-learning methods and

Ways to Achieve Objectives

CUG will strive to achieve the stated objectives by providing access to quality education and training to its

Nature of Academic Courses

The University offers academic courses that are specialized as well as interdisciplinary. Following are the

kinds of courses offered across the disciplines:

Core Courses are in the subject of specialization in undergraduate/postgraduate programmes,

including their status of national and international knowledge.

Elective Courses are chosen by students as per their aptitude from any Centre/School of the University or

even outside of the University.

Supportive Courses are in soft skills, such as communication skills in English, personality development, etc.

Social Orientation Courses are offered to add value to orientations of students on issues like national

integration, environment and conservation, democratic and secular values.

the humanities. In the near future, the University plans to establish Schools of studies in the fields of health,

Prospectus and Application Form

Prospectus and Application Form of Central University of Gujarat (CUG) for admission to various

programmes of study can be obtained or downloaded from the following sources:

1. Online Applications

Students can fill up the application form online. The online application form is available on the

University website (www.cug.ac.in). When filling an online application, students should mention the

mode of payment that they have opted for in the application itself. Candidates are advised to mention

the payment details in the online application failing which the application form may be rejected.

2. Application Form Downloaded from University website

Application Form and Prospectus can be downloaded from University website

www.cug.ac.in. The filled in application form along with fee details can then be sent through post.

SCHOOL OF SOCIAL SCIENCESThe courses offered by the School of Social Sciences aim at imparting and generating knowledge on

emerging issues and problems of contemporary society, economy and polity.

The course structure is choice based, flexible and is interdisciplinary. The pedagogy and didactics are

interactive and based on field learning. The academic format places great emphasis on student initiative.

The evaluation is continuous and grade based. Assignments, tutorials, seminars, projects carry equal weight

as semester exams.

At the end of the course, a student would be equipped with analytical skills, social science theoretical

knowledge based on empirical and field-based learning. Thus a student with this kind of learning can look

forward to careers in teaching, management, research, policy making, development sector, media and

administration.

The thrust areas of the M.Phil.-Ph.D. programme would be Development

Management Institutions and Governanceand .


The Centre for Studies in Social Management offers a 5 years integrated programme in the field of Social

Management. The ten semester programme aims to equip its participants with the requisite skills of both

social work and management discipline, embedded in social sciences, that ensures a multidisciplinary

approach. This would help in critically understanding issues in the development sector. The field work

component (which is around 40 percent of the course) would ensure that the students would gain an

exposure to a diverse range of organizations from grass root level to public institutions. On completion of the

course, the students would find gainful employment at various managerial positions in social organizations

& development sector.

Social Management as an academic programme also envisages taking up research programmes that seeks to

understand and develop theoretical and applied knowledge and skills with respect to policy issues, so as to

act as a catalyst for change. Given the diverse actors in the policy domain, the Centre for Studies in Social

Management would open up a platform for dialogue between academia, government, civil society and

NGOs at various levels. The core idea is to have professionals and researchers who will contribute in

innovative and critical ways to the development sector.

Centre for Studies in Society and Development

Centre for Studies in Society and Development is anchored to the disciplines of sociology, anthropology and

social work in articulating perspectives on development. The Centre aims to generate and disseminate

knowledge on theoretical and applied aspects of society and development and the interfaces between

them. Its courses introduce and engage with different theoretical formulations and debates concerning local

as well as global social development. It tries to analyse different processes, actors, structures and power

relations as constructed and contested by the state and different institutions as well. Teaching and research

activities in the Centre have been oriented towards contemporary questions pertaining to theoretical and

applied dimensions of society. The Centre engages in teaching courses like Theories of Society, Perspectives

on Social Development, Research Methodology, Understanding Indian Society Rural and Urban, Social

Stratification, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Human Rights, Marginalisation and Social Exclusion, Political

Economy, Globalisation, State and Social Justice, Health and Development, Migration and Diaspora,

Corporate Social Responsibility and Social Entrepreneurship, at both M.A and M.Phil. levels. The pedagogy

is based on interactive teaching and reflexive exercise.

M.A. in Society and Development

M.A in Society and Development is a two-year, full time course, consisting of four semesters.

The students are mandated to take 16 courses, comprising of both core papers and optional

papers. During the vacation the students are encouraged to take up internship programmes with

NGOs, research institutions and other institutions working in the area of development.

M.Phil.-Ph.D. in Society and Development

M.Phil.-Ph.D. in Society and Development is a full-time, integrated programme. However,

before getting promoted to the Ph.D. programme the students are mandated to fulfill the

minimum grade points in the M.Phil. course. Students admitted to the programme are required

to do two semester course work; followed by one semester dissertation work, which is

extendable by another semester (but without fellowship). However, students have to secure

minimum grade points in their course work to write their dissertation; and the required to CGPA

to proceed further to the Ph.D.

Centre for Studies in Science,Technology and Innovation policy (CSSTIP)

Centre for Studies in Science, Technology and Innovation Policy (CSSTIP) focuses on the social and cultural

dynamics of science and technology from an interdisciplinary and comparative framework. The centre

specialises on a wide range of themes and concerns at the interface of science and society, dwelling upon

theoretical insights offered by the emergent academic field of Science, Technology and Society (STS)

studies. The centre endeavours to study philosophical, historical, sociological, developmental and cultural

dimensions of S&T in India and equips students to critically analyse science, technology and innovation

policies.

The Centre offers excellent academic environment that gives students international exposure and

possibilities to interact with academicians, policy makers, S&T departments and agencies, civil society

organisations and movements, entrepreneurs, innovators and technocrats. Scholars who finish M.Phil.-

Ph.D. from the Centre have wide employment opportunities in academics as well as governmental

departments/agencies and civil society organisations.

M.Phil.-Ph.D. Programme on Studies in Science, Technology and Innovation Policy

Currently the Centre offers an integrated M.Phil.-Ph.D. programme on Studies in Science,

Technology and Innovation Policy. The objective of the programme is to equip students to

critically analyse science, technology and innovation in specific disciplinary, sectoral and

institutional contexts of South Asia to enable the shaping of socially robust and ethically

committed knowledge production practices and inclusive policies. Students will be exposed to

the academic debates in the field and rigorous training will be offered in both quantitative and

qualitative dimensions of research.

Centre for Studies in Economics and Planning under the School of Social Sciences offers an

integrated and it intends to introduce an M.A.M.Phil.-Ph.D. programme in Economics

programme very soon.

The main objective of the CSEP is to impart quality education/teaching in different branches of economics,

and promote theoretical and empirical research on various emerging socio-economic issues that are faced

at regional, national and global levels. The Centre would like to contribute to the better policy making

aimed at inclusive development and improvement of welfare of people at large. The Centre

comprehensively focuses on the areas of regional economic growth and human development, informal

Centre for Gandhian Thought and Peace Studies

Centre for Gandhian Thought and Peace Studies is an interdisciplinary teaching and research centre.

Keeping in view the challenges of violence, conflict and wars in societies in India and elsewhere, it is

imperative to study peace as an interdisciplinary subject of social sciences. Peace research includes a range

of topics, including questions relating to mediation and negotiations, third party involvement in civil wars,

peace processes, electoral violence, military reintegration, political economy, and communal conflicts and

their resolution. In this backdrop, the Centre undertakes research on Gandhian philosophy, political theory,

human rights and critical philosophical traditions that inform methods of non-violent resistance and social

change. The Centre also studies social movements happening across the globe, peaceful transformation of

societies and the challenges of post-conflict peace building.

SCHOOL OF INTERNATIONAL STUDIESIntroduction to the School

The School has been conceptualised to encourage diversity in the constitution of knowledge of

international affairs in India. Its current focus is on creating new and relevant knowledge in the core IR areas

such as International Politics and Security Studies. In the coming years, the School intends to pursue

research in history, theory and sociology of modern India's international relations and all areas of Security

Studies. Aware of the Gujarat's historical connections with the larger world, it will pursue research on

maritime influences on India's trade, culture and security. These relatively new areas would be pursued

alongside more conventional research areas such as International Relations Theories, International

Organisations, International Trade and Development, International Law, and Globalisation. Among

geographical area studies, the School's immediate area of focus is the India immediate and extended

neighbourhood. Programmes and the Centres of the School are interdisciplinary to the extent possible in

the Indian context. All programmes of the School equally emphasise theory and policy and train students to

contribute meaningfully to the society, country and the world at large.

M.A. in Politics and International Relations

The programme introduces students to core debates in politics and international relations through a

minimum of sixteen core and optional papers spanning across four semesters. The time between these

semesters is to be utilised through field-work and internships. The School is in the process of building

linkages with groups and organisations that could provide on-field and in-house practical training to

students enrolled for the programme through internships and research project associations.

The MA in Politics and International Relations has been designed to encourage the study of international

affairs in western India. The School seeks to leverage its unique location in the state of Gujarat to facilitate

critical understanding of and linkages with global forces. The MA programme prepares students for career in

the academia, niche journalism such as defense, security and foreign affairs, entrepreneurship in new

media, civil services, advocacy groups and non-governmental organisations. Students appearing for the

entrance exam of the MA programme are expected to have basic understanding of Indian politics, modern

Indian and world histories, current affairs and India's foreign policy. The MA programme is taught by faculty

of the School with regular lectures by guest faculty who have expertise in specific areas of politics and

international relations.

Centre for Security Studies

Centre for Security Studies (CSS) at the School of International Studies attempts to impart theoretical,

empirical and critical understanding of the changing notions of security encompassing a complex and

frequently interconnected set of issues. The integrated M.Phil / Ph.D programme offered at the Centre

address key elements of both traditional and non-traditional security issues ranging from national defence

and security, international security, terrorism, security in the cyber age, ethnic, religious and ideological

conflicts, as well as threats to human security and the stability of states from environmental degradation,

infectious diseases, cross-border migration and the activities of non-state actors.

The Centre views security as a multidisciplinary issue that should involve the widest spectrum of individuals

and benefit from the contribution of all sectors in society. The Centre's integrated M.Phil / Ph.D program is

designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills relevant to understanding both traditional and

emerging security challenges, drawing on a wide range of disciplinary fields including defence, international

relations, strategic studies, political science, economics, demography etc. The focus is not only on strategic

thinking and analysis, regional and country knowledge, but also to equip students with skills to pursue a

career in academics, diplomacy, journalism, humanitarian and non-governmental work.Students

appearing for the entrance test are expected to have an understanding of Indian politics, world history,

world geography, international affairs, contemporary social, economic and political issues at the national

and international level.

SCHOOL OF LANGUAGE, LITERATURE ANDCULTURE STUDIES

School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies (SLL&CS) runs post-graduate and research

programmes in various subjects related to Humanities such as the study of Indian and foreign languages and

comparative study of literatures and cultures. Issues related to gender, caste, race and processes of exclusion

and marginalization in society, questions related to migration and identity of diaspora communities form

some of the core areas of study in the courses offered by the School. All the programmes are interdisciplinary

and innovative in nature and prepare students for employment in teaching, research, print and visual

media, administration, publishing, editing and emerging areas such as technical writing and content

development.

The programmes offered in the School follow Choice Based Credit System. Attendance in the classroom is

compulsory for under-graduate, post-graduate courses as well as the course work of the M.Phil./Ph.D.

programme. Class-room lectures are designed to ensure students' participation and involvement. Teachers

also use seminars, workshops and films to impart instruction. Students have to submit assignments, projects

and papers regularly as part of their coursework. They are also required to make presentations/give seminars

on topics related to their subjects. Students' participation in the class-room is given special weightage

in evaluation. In each semester there is a mid-semester examination and an end-semester examination. All

the centres of the School arrange lectures by learned experts and hold workshops and seminars on new

fields/areas of the subject.

Centre for German Studies

Five year integrated M.A. Programme in German Studies

The Centre for German Studies offers a Five-year integrated M.A. Programme in German Studies. The

Programme focuses on intensive language learning in the first year. Students are trained in the skills of

writing, reading, speaking and comprehension according to updated pedagogy in Foreign Language

Teaching. In the succeeding years, language teaching is combined with the study of literature, cultural and

political history of German speaking countries, translation, linguistics and other subjects. The Courses are

designed to familiarize students with the culture and society of Germany. Several optional courses are

available that will lead students further to interdisciplinary research areas like Translation Studies, Culture

Studies, and Literary Theory. The Centre emphasizes student-centered interactive learning that allows

students enough space for their personal development.

After successful completion of three years the students are eligible for B.A. (Hon's) degree in German. In

Five year integrated Programme in Chinese StudiesM.A.

The Centre for Chinese Language and Culture started functioning from the academic year 2012-13. The

centre offers a five year integrated (UG/PG) M.A. programme in Chinese language to students who have

completed their 10+2 in any stream. The programme consists of a total of ten semesters, whereas after

successful completion of six semesters' courses students are eligible for B.A. (Hon's) degree in Chinese.

Chinese Studies has emerged as a major academic discipline in today's world. India and China both have a

long history of cultural association as important ancient civilizations of the world. The interaction of both

civilizations can be traced back to the level of people through commerce of silk route to the introduction of

Buddhism from India and even much before that. As neighbours they have much in common in terms of

values and world-views. Of late, China has emerged as a major economic and defence power and India has

close trade associations with China. There is a felt need to have experts on China who can help relations

between both countries and serve the need of society at large. The students who join the course will find job

The Centre for English Studies offers an M.A. English program consisting of four semesters of course work.

The course content reflects the changed contours of the discipline of English Studies. In addition to the core

Centre for Diaspora Studies (CDS)Diaspora Studies is a new interdisciplinary area that has emerged in Humanities and Social Sciences dealing

with the study of migration and its cultural, literary, social, political and economic impact. It is an established

fact that the contribution of overseas communities of Indians to Indian economy has been substantial. Also

the Indian overseas community has emerged as the 'soft power' promoting India's international relations,

being its global ambassadors and contributing immensely to the social and intellectual capital of India. But

what is less known is the mourning and trauma of losing the protection of home and homeland, challenges

of alienation, assimilation, acculturation and reconciliation encountered by people who migrate to foreign

countries. A sizeable body of literature now exists both in the forms of novels, biographies, autobiographies,

diaries, short stories, dramas, poems (not to mention films) and also scholarly writings on issues related to the

historical, anthropological, sociological, political and economic aspects of the process of migration of

people. The history of Indian migration goes back to ancient and pre-modern times though it has become a

subject of study only in recent times. The Centre takes a multidisciplinary approach to study the variant

aspects of diaspora.

Center for Comparative Literature and Translation Studies

Comparative Literature is an interdisciplinary area of studies that has gained importance in the academic

programmes of Humanities in the last few decades. As a subject it has great relevance to a multi-lingual

society like India. Comparative Literature allows students to explore research areas in the core subjects of

thematology, genealogy, literary history, literary influence, and reception, besides related fields of

performance studies, theatre studies, film studies etc. It goes beyond mere comparative study of texts to

include issues of nation, caste, race, gender, region, culture etc. in the analysis of texts. The relation between

orality and literacy as well as issues related to the history of print and publishing also form topics studied

under the rubric of Comparative Literature.

The School of Chemical Sciences (SCS) is a unique centre of learning that fosters innovative scientific

ideas through interdisciplinary and interacting teaching and research in frontal areas of the natural

sciences. The School pursues research in applied and green chemistry, textile and polymer chemistry,

petroleum products, supramolecules and macromolecules, kinetics and catalysts, physical organic

Nanoscience and Nanotechnology are fast growing areas of Science and Technology which span the entire spectrum

have published widely in the field.

Central Library

The Central Library has a wide collection of resources taking into consideration the course contents and

research needs of the university. Library's learning resource collections are developed aiming at providing

the highest level of research and teaching support to the programmes and research thrust areas. Collection is

reviewed every year in order to be relevant to the emerging and developing areas of research. The Library is

growing in its breadth and depth it holds about 22500 books, and subscribes to over 66 print journals and

magazines and over 7497+ e-journals. The Library has SOUL software and computerized library facilities.


The Cyber Library provides seamless access to e-journals available at the university. Its main aim is to

provide access to computers and internet to the students coming from economically weaker sections who

are not able to buy computers/laptop individually. It has over 25 Pentium workstations with broadband

internet access. CUG has successfully migrated towards the internet age by adding 7497+ online journals to

its collection. The Library also provides access to several databases.

Wi-fi and ICT Facility

The University is wi-fi enabled and students can access the internet on the basis of a personal id and

password provided by the University. The University also has a CyberLab that enables students to access a

large variety of resources on the web that includes journals, databases, and books.

Hostel Facility

Limited Hostel accommodation both for men and women is available on a first come first allotment basis.

The hostel fees are stipulated as per the norms of the University. Private accommodation on a shared basis is

available in the city of Gandhinagar at reasonable rates.

Health Facility

Government medical facility is available adjacent to the University Campus where the students can avail of

medical help during medical hours. In addition, the Government Civil Hospital is located near the

University. The University also has a medical consultant whose services are available to students on

subsidized rates.

Earn While You Learn Scheme

The Earn While You Learn Initiative is a unique scheme in the Central University of Gujarat for aiding

students of the undergraduate and postgraduate level programmes of the University who do not receive

fellowships. The initiative is particularly meant for those students who come from financially and socially

disadvantaged sections of the society to support them during their stay at the University. As a part of the

initiative, the students are assigned duties in the University Cyber Library after the classroom hours. The

University intends to increase the scope of this scheme to include other University duties as well. Special

care is taken for women students who are allotted convenient timings.

Rs. 3000/- and Rs. 5000/- respectively, and contingency amount of Rs.8000/- per annum through the UGC

Appearance in More than One Entrance Examination

Candidates can apply for more than one course through the same application form provided they meet the

minimum eligibility criteria. A candidate may opt for a maximum of three courses for entrance examinations

of her/his choice. Before opting for this choice, though, the candidate should see the schedule of

examination in the Prospectus and ensure that there is no clash in the three examinations opted for (opted

examinations should not fall in the same session).

Concession for the Wards of Kashmiri Migrants in the Matter of Admission

The following concessions to Kashmiri migrant students in the matter of their admission would be provided

as per the guideline of MHRD Ref. D.O. No. F.10-1/10-Desk(U) dated: 02.02.2011:

(I) Extension in date of admission by about 30 days

(ii) Relaxation in cut-off percentage up to 10% subject to minimum eligibility requirement

(iii) Course-wise increase in intake capacity of up to 5%

(iv) Reservation of at least one seat in merit quota in technical/ professional institutions

(v) Waiving of domicile requirement

(vi) Facilitation of migration in second and subsequent years

Course Code: For various Academic programmes / courses for the Academic year 2014-15, course

codes are given in the prospectus. Select the Course Code/Codes given and fill the same in Course Code

box /boxes in the application form. A candidate can apply for more than one but maximum of three

subjects for entrance examinations of his/her choice in the same application form provided he/she is

eligible. But before opting for this choice the candidate should see the schedule of entrance examination

and ensure that there is no clash in the three opted Entrance Examination Schedules (opted

examinations should not fall in the same session).

Reservation of Seats for

Final Admission

The University follows the reservation policies of the Government of India/UGC as issued and amended

from time to time.

Seats in each Programme of Study for Other Backward Classes/Scheduled Caste / ScheduledTribe /

Differently - abled are as given below:

Reservation of Seats for Differently-Abled (PH category) Candidates

Three percent of the seats are reserved for the physically differently-abled candidates in all the programmes

of study within each category i.e. General, SC, ST and OBC. Differently-abled candidates, who have passed

the qualifying examination, are eligible to appear in the entrance examination irrespective of their

percentage of marks. Such candidates would be considered for admission only to those fields of

study/disciplines where their physical disability is not considered a hindrance in pursuing the course of

study.

A candidate, in order to be eligible for any concession/benefits offered for the differently-abled, should have

a minimum degree of disability to the extent of 40 percent. The certifying authority on disability in all such

cases will be a medical board at the district level consisting of the Chief Medical Officer/Sub-Divisional

Medical Officer in the District and another expert in the specified field viz. Ophthalmic Surgeon in the case

of visually differently-abled and ENT surgeon or an Audiologist in case of speech and hearing differently-

abled, and Orthopedic Surgeon or a specialist in Physical Medicine and re-habilitation in case of a

locomotor challenged person. A person with physically challenged certificate for hearing & speech abilities

may be referred for verification to government hospital. The degree of the disability of the candidates

applying under this category may also be verified by the Medical Board detailed by the University.
