By Joan Olson Hello to all of our Curly members! Fall is coming and soon we will be riding in our winter jackets. Make sure you are prepared for the cold and that your horse is ready too. We do not blanket our Curlies in Nevada unless there is a lot of wet rain with the snow. If the weather stays wet for more than two or three days we check to make sure we do not have any runny noses. Just like having kids! The newly elected Board of Officers of the ABC wish to give to Melinda Martino a very big THANK YOU for all the work she has done with all of our transitions the office has made in the years that she was President of the ABC. The Registry could not have done it without her. Melinda will still be the Registrar and will be running the office in Kentucky. Let’s all give her our full support and help with any information she needs. Our 2013 Annual Convention in Kaufman, Texas was hosted by Angie Gaines, an At-Large Board member. Wow, what a great time we had meeting new Curly People! The demos and food were great; we especially liked seeing the Curly Horses perform. Our 2014 convention will be hosted by Marion Huurman-de Roos of Hidden Cave Curly Ranch. We hope to see you all there!! Look for information to be posted on the ABC website in the future. That address is www.abcregistry.org if you did not know. We also want to give a Big Thanks to Caren Schumann for dragging us into the Tech age. Computers are not fun for the older people who did not grow up with them. We are learning to adjust and do need help with having to do everything online now. Please have patience with our registry office when awaiting any certificates. We are updating our database as we go and want to make sure everything is correct before you get your ABCR certificates. If any member would have a problem, do not hesitate to call or email your district representative with your questions. That is what they are there for. You will find their email addresses and phone numbers on the website. Good Bye for now and enjoy your Curly Horses! Joan

ABCR Convention 2013
By Angie Gaines & Sue Davis
43rd Annual Convention, American Bashkir Curly
Registry
Wahoo, we were so excited to share our Golden Curly
Horses and Mustangs with friends from around the
World October 3-6th. We had 17 ABC members,
breeders and friends attend. The convention started out
Thursday evening with an educational update on the
progress made in finding the curly gene with Dr. Gus
Cothran, DVM of Texas A&M University, College
Station. We are making progress but it seems the gene
is a bit more elusive than originally thought and there is
still more research needed to find it.
When asked specifically for what his definition of a
breed is he stated that "...it is a closed group of
individuals that are being bred specifically for a trait or
traits...",
thus agreeing with us that the closed book Full Curlies
do indeed qualify as a breed
On Friday, the weather was perfect and we had a full day
of riding demonstrations and presentations including lots
of ABCR registered Curly Horses and Curly Mustangs.
Adena Warner and Cody Killingsworth shared the
history of roping and western side saddle riding with
their stallion, Warrior Seek Justice and Shaw Mead.
Our Lakota and student, Brianna Glascox shared their
trail pattern freestyle and our Stallion Chester was quite
content to lend a great body for a Chiropractor
demonstration with Dr. Joe Parrish.
Golden Curls Ranch veterinarian, Dr. Brian Ator shared
updates with us about the do’s and don’ts about equine
vaccinations and our Curly Mustang, Copper D's Golden
Red was great in a natural barefoot trimming
demonstration with new member Natalie LaBelle.
Our grand finale of our ranch day presentations was our
BLM gather Curly Mustang Stallion, ABCR #CM-1,
O'Sparky and our in-house trainer, Frank Wilder sharing
gentle partnering with your Curly Mustangs.
True to Texas style fun we had great Boot Scootin' music
while munching on lots of slowed smoked BBQ and
fixings

A Romantic Curly True Tale
By Sue Davis
Early this year I received a phone call from a young man
named Lee. His girlfriend, Erin loved horses and he
wanted to take her on a trail ride and propose to her! The
only problem was that she was very allergic to horses.
Erin had ridden as a young girl but had gotten so allergic
she was no longer able to be around horses. Lee knew
that it would make her so happy if she would ever get the
chance to ride again, so he set out on a quest to find out if
there was such a thing as hypo-allergenic horses. In his
research he found the American Bashkir Curly! Lee then
set about trying to track down Curly ranches that might
be able to accommodate his desire to propose
marriage…on a trail ride. Sadly he was met with much
disappointment as everywhere he called, he was told that
they were unable to help him.
Finally, on one of his calls, the ranch owner suggested to
him to call High Desert Equine in Reno, NV. Thus he
called us! Of course we specialize in trying to provide
well trained Curlies, so we were more than happy to
accommodate his needs! Noticing that the phone number
was long distance I asked where he was phoning
from….New York!!! You can only imagine my surprise!!
We decided on a mid-May date and Lee went about setting
up their “vacation”, where they planned to fly into Reno,
visit Tahoe, then head to Napa and on to Southern
California. Of course Erin knew nothing of the surprise he
had planned! Fortunately Lee arranged it so that he was
flying out ahead of her and was able to come out, visit the
ranch and make a plan for the next day!
He had even worked out that he would bring along a bottle
of anti-histamine, “just in case”, and of course that was
where the ring would be hiding!! The next morning, they
arrived as planned and the horses were saddled and ready to
go. They were taken on a beautiful, scenic 2 hour ride,
where at the top of the mountain they “stopped to check out
the scenery”, at which point Lee suggested that morning
maybe, just to be on the safe side she might go ahead and
take an allergy pill. Of course, much to her delight she
found the ring, and much to his delight she accepted! And
much to OUR delight she had absolutely NO reaction to the
horses! They had a wonderful time, as did we and we were
thrilled to get the opportunity to be a part of such an
important step in Lee and Erin’s future! We want to
congratulate them on their upcoming marriage and wish
them joy and success for their future! And maybe, just
maybe, they will come back and visit us again….or even
buy a Curly!
