Welcome to Cuba Absolutely’s Havana What’s On Guide to the best in Havana entertainment produced inassociation with Cubaism travel agency.
This month we have highlighted the Santiago Carnival which takes place between July 24-27, 2010. This isCuba’s premier carnival and is extremely hot. Sweltering temperatures, dancing, music combine with a partyattitude make this Cuba’s premier carnival. This may be rough and raw around the edges (perhaps not for thefaint hearted), but it is certainly real and an experience not to forget.
Enjoy.

Alluding to director Humberto Solás’s well-known Cuban film Lucía, which tells the story ofthree women in three different periods in Cuba, this fourth Lucía--one-woman show written by Maikel Chávez and Eduardo Eimil and whichearned the actress the 2009 Caricato Prize--has one principal thing in common with itsantecessors: the force with which she defendsher dreams against adverse fate. In this case, the play deals with an actress who lives thesame anxieties and anguishes as any otherordinary Cuban and who goes from casting to casting in search of a character that will lift herout of anonymity.

La gran tirana is based on the life of thelegendary Cuban singer Guadalupe Yolí, whoafter a brief yet successful career in her owncountry, obtained fame and fortune in NewYork to later die in poverty and anonymity.According to the playwright and critic Amadodel Pino, with this play, “Carlos Padrón revealshimself as a writer who delves into the roots ofnationality, into the deepest recesses ofpopular culture. His close examination of thiswoman is credible, familiar, representable…itis more than an emblematic role or a time-wornpattern.
After two months of performance to a packedhouse, Mefisto Teatro continues this monthwith Chicago, which first opened in Broadwayin 1975. Deliberately drifting away from the2002 film version, the director, Tony Díaz, has formed a cast of bright young hopes andexperienced actors.
