In keeping with its motto, “To Read is to Grow,” the Havana International Book Fair is designed to promotedomestic and international literature to people of all ages and preferences. Probably the most importantevent of its kind in LatinAmerica, besides the exhibition and sale of books from Cuban and foreign publishinghouses, the fair includes book launchings, authors’ readings, art exhibitions, museum events, eveningconcerts and recitals, and screenings of films based on literary themes, all of which draw huge crowds. Forthe enjoyment of the youngsters, the fair has the famous children’s pavilion, Paper Treasures. So, if you’re inHavana, check the fair out. It’s definitely worth it!

What began as a modest book fair founded bythe famous Cuban writer, scientist andphilosopher, Alejo Carpentier round Havana’sCentral Park, eventually became the mostimportant literary event on the island. The 20thedition in 2011 will be dedicated to NationalPrize-winners Jaime Sarusky and FernandoMartínez Heredia, etc.—for Literature andSocial Sciences, respectively—and to thecultures of ALBA countries and thebicentennial of the wars for independence in

LatinAmerica. Every year, during the International Book Fair, tensof thousands of people pack the San Carlos de la CabañaFortress in Havana, attracted by book launchings of all genresand topics from Cuban and foreign publishing houses, along withpanel discussions, lectures by guest authors and editors, poetryreadings, concerts, children’s events, and a crafts fair. This year,the organizers have extended points of sale to the Pabellón Cubaand lectures and a number of launchings to Centro de EstudiosMartianos, Casa de las Américas and UNEAC, all in the ElVedado district. The City Historian’s Office publishing house,Ediciones Boloña, will exhibit and launch its beautiful books to thegallery of the Rubén Martínez Villena Public Library right acrossthe Plaza de Armas in Old Havana. Festival del Monólogo Cubano

Sponsored by the Tomas Terry Theatre inCienfuegos, the Cuban Monologue Festivalwas launched in 2003 with the aim of validatinga genre, which by nature demands intensecommitment of both playwrights and actors.Despite being one of the newer events in thedomestic cultural scene, this festival hasalready achieved a standing in the Cubanstage, and at present the most renownedCuban playwrights, directors, actors andactresses compete in the beautiful Terrytheatre. Twelve companies from six Cubanprovinces plus five companies from Argentina,Peru, Puerto Rico and Spain will be performingthis year. An anthology of monologues whichhave been staged in previous festivals will bepresented this year. The event includes thelaunching of specialized magazines andbooks, lectures and workshops.

The play, which successfully combinesmusic, dance and acting, was first produced bythe Washington DC-based Teatro Latino in2010.

According to Lilian Susel Zaldívar, La pasiónde Juana de Arco, by Rubén Sicilia, “takesplace…is a monologue for two voices. Organized by composer Juan Blanco, apioneer of electroacoustic music in Cuba, theVaradero Spring Festival--as it was first called--gathered important figures which included JonAppelton, Max Matthew, Leo Kupper, AhmedMalek, Nicola Sani, Lejaren Hiller, ManuelEnríquez, Ricardo Dal Farra and AndrewSchloss. In 1998, the event moved its venue toHavana's Historical Centre. It is now theHavana Spring International ElectroacousticMusic Festival.

The International Pepe Sánchez TrovaFestival began in 1962 in homage to localSantiago de Cuba composer José (Pepe)Sánchez (1856-1918), considered the father ofCuban trova (the troubador genre of voice,song and poetry that is usually accompaniedby a guitar). Several generations of musiciansfrom different musical trends within trovaparticipate in this event, including exponents ofmore traditional trova, of filin (an evolution ofbolero and trova), and of nueva trova (the veryCuban genre of personal commentaryinfluenced by British, US and Brazilian popularmusic). Santiago de Cuba—the cradle oftrova—hosts this festival which takes the city’sstreets and parks by storm in a celebrationwhere musicians and singers from abroad jointheir Cuban counterparts. The closing of thefestival on Troubador Day, March 19th,commemorates the anniversary of the birth ofPepe Sanchez.

Created in 2000, the Internat ionalDocumentary Festival Santiago Álvarez InMemoriam aims at highlighting the prominentrole of the documentary, a film genre that hasbeen somewhat consigned to oblivion by thepromotional mechanisms of the larger moviefestivals, yet with a tradition of significantquality and acknowledgement in Cuba, amongother factors, thanks to the work of the lateprize-winning Cuban film-maker, SantiagoAlvarez. Although the festival began as anational event dedicated to the memory of themost relevant Cuban documentary maker of alltime, throughout the years it has attracted theattention of a number of filmmakers from LatinAmerica, Europe and the United States. Founded in 1980, orchestras and soloists fromCuba and other countries get together to singand dance in homage to a legend of Cubanmusic, admired by Cubans not only for histalent as singer, composer and bandleader, butalso for his warmth, unpretentiousness and atouch of eccentricity: Beny Moré. The festivalincludes tours to Beny’s hometown, SantaIsabel de las Lajas, and to which he dedicatedone of his most popular songs. Lectures andexhibitions also accompany the good musicplayed by famous Cuban bands, which turnLajas and the nearby city of Cienfuegos intogigantic dancing floors.

Organized for the first time in 1993, thisInternational Meeting of Ballet Academies hasmade it possible for dancers, teachers andstudents to become familiar with the technicaland stylistic peculiarities of the Cuban Schoolof Ballet through workshops, courses, andmethodological and master lessons. Similarly,dancers and pedagogues from other countrieshave conveyed their experiences in a fruitfulexchange with their Cuban colleagues. Inaddition, since 1995, an internationalcompetition for students is held in differentcategories (13-14, 15-16 and 17-18 years old)and four prizes are awarded: revelation, bestpartners, best individual performance and theGrand Prix.
