Scio Memorial Library receives check
The Allegany County Area Foundation recently presented a $547.16 check to the Scio Memorial Li-brary.
This check comes from the current earnings of an ACAF endowment estab-lished by the Shear Fam-ily and the Hydramec Corporation of Scio back in 1989.
On hand for the check presentation were: Caro-lyn Miller, president of the Allegany County Area Foundation; Nancy Nor-ton, library board mem-ber; and Sue Moyer, direc-tor of the Scio Memorial Library.
This money will be used to develop the side lot next to our library, Moyer said.
The library is open from 3-7 p.m. Tuesday, 5-9 p.m. Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 3
p.m. Thursday, 1-5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
For more information, visit their web site at scio-library.org.
The Allegany County Area Foundation holds as-sets of over 8 million dol-lars.
The endowed funds con-tinue to grow in perpetuity to enrich and improve the lives of Allegany County people. This past June, the foundation awarded over $239,000 in scholarships alone.
If you would like more information on how you can provided a legacy of hope and good will in our community, contact the Allegany County Area Foundation at 585-808-8444 or visit their web site at www.allegany-countyareafoundation.org.

SENIOR NEWS LINEby Matilda Charles
Do You Live Alone?Nearly 30 percent of seniors live alone. Home safety is very important to us, and even more important during the short, dark days of win-ter. Here are a few hints to stay safe. Invest in a few of those small tap lights -- the kind you touch on top to turn on -- and put them along your path to various rooms, es-pecially if you have to cross a room in the dark before reaching a lamp. Turn on a light when you reach for your weekly pill container to be sure you dont grab the wrong days pills. Use a ladder and step-stool only if someone else is around. Keep things you need on lower shelves.
Guard against slipping. Beware of scatter rugs that slide easily on hard fl oors. If your shoes are worn enough that theyre slick on wood or vinyl fl ooring, its time to re-place them. Keep your door locked when youre home alone, even if you live in a safe neighborhood. If youre on social media, be careful what you reveal online. Never say that you live alone. Be aware in the kitchen. Be sure the stove and other appliances are off when youre fi nished with them. Mop up spills. Have a fi re extinguisher and know how to use it. One of the best ways to stay safe is to stay in touch
with others. If its available, sign up for daily caller ser-vice, likely through your se-nior center. Or make a deal with a neighbor that youllcheck in with each other ev-ery morning by phone. Signup for Meals on Wheels orattend meals at a local seniorcenter. For more hints, go onlineand search for seniors liv-ing alone safety.
Matilda Charles regrets thatshe cannot personally an-swer reader questions, butwill incorporate them intoher column whenever pos-sible. Send email to [email protected].

Gretchen Murray Sepik to presentErie Canal Sal at Cuba Library
The Cuba Library will be hosting Gretchen Murray Sepik actress, storyteller, playwright, author and illus-trator at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25 when she will be pre-senting, Erie Canal Sal.
The program is a theatri-cal characterization of Sal McMurray, an Irish cook working on a packet boat traveling the Erie Canal in the year 1840. The program combines Irish folk tales and facts about the canal that are truein a very broad sense. Youll laugh while you learn about one of the engineering wonders of the world.
Sepik was born in Mer-cer, Pa. and was raised in the country where she and her brother, Greg, would spend hours playing in the woods and fi elds that sur-rounded their home. I guess Im the result of my fathers storytelling and my mothers boundless imagination, Sepik said. Her father, Mi-chael, worked in a mill and could tell the best stories about the Pennsylvania coal mines, railroads and horses. Her mother, Jinny, was a singer and encouraged her to sing songs, learn nursery rhymes and she always had a
box of old clothes for Sepik to dress up in.
My mother was the great-est infl uence in my life and was responsible for guiding me toward my lifes work, Sepik said. She was my best friend. Before I was old enough to go to school my mother would ask me each morning who I wanted to be for the day. I could be any-body.
Sepik jokingly says that she never knew her real name until she started the fi rst grade. Ive always loved to play dress up and by doing theatrical character-izations I can play dress up for the rest of my life.
Along with McMurray, Sepik also portrays Mary Jemison, a white woman who, as a young girl, was captured by the Shawnee Indians and given to the Sen-eca Indians. She lived the rest of her life among the Seneca and when offered her freedom chose to remain with her Seneca family and friends whom she loved. Jemison is buried at Letch-worth State Park, which is situated on land she once owned, and a statue erected in her honor is located at the
council grounds.Sepik does a characteriza-
tion of nineteenth-century womens rights leader, Su-san B. Anthony who not only speaks of life in the 1800s, but also comments on current issues. She also portrays much-loved chil-drens author and illustrator, Beatrix Potter, who narrates The Tale of Peter Rabbit and The Tale of Mrs. Tittle-mouse, incorporating the audience into the story.
I think storytelling is one of the most wonderfully creative art forms because it allows each person to be who they are and use what talents they have to tell a story, Sepik said. If a per-son can sing, let them sing. If a person can dance, let them dance. If a person can juggle, let them juggle. As each sto-ryteller weaves a story, their own unique individuality adds to the tapestry of the tale they tell. When perform-ing in schools my goal is to awaken children to the joy of learning, the joy of life and the joy of who they are.
As one child so aptly put it, someone fi nally got me to like history.

Winter Prep Checklist
Fall is a time to prepare homes, vehicles and even our psyches for the arrival of winter. To get your car cold-weather ready, check and repair these items now. Tire pressure can drop in cold weather. When tires DUHXQGHULQDWHG\RXORVHIXHO HIFLHQF\ VR PRQLWRUand maintain tire pressure throughout the winter.
Those who live in particularly cold climates should switch from all-season to winter tires. Much as you wear winter boots to provide more traction and protection than sneakers, so should you equip your vehicle with tires that will stand up to winter terrain.Check on the status of
your battery and its starting power. Cold weather can put more strain on a car battery. A battery that is already weak may not turn over when you need it most. Replace worn wiper blades and upgrade to D ZLQGVKLHOG XLG WKDWis rated for subzero temperatures. Each of these items will improve visibility when winter precipitation is making its presence felt. Schedule an oil change at the beginning of winter. Dirty oil can hinder cold-weather starts and, if coupled with low coolant OHYHOV FDQPDNH LW GLIFXOWfor the engine to turn over. Keep jumper cables, a battery booster pack and warning cones in your vehicle. These can come to the rescue if your battery
dies and youre strandedon the side of the road. While youre stocking the trunk or cargo bed, include a shovel, sand orFDW OLWWHU D DVKOLJKW DQice scraper, water, and ablanket. These are goodemergency items to have inthe event your car breaksdown in the winter. You can dig your tires out of asnow drift with the shovel and apply litter to increasetraction. The blanket will come in handy if you have to sit in a cold car for awhile awaiting roadside service.Consider taking a winter driving course. Icy, snowy conditions completelychange the defensivetactics needed to navigatethe roads. A prepareddriver is one who is more likely to avoid accidentsand make it home safely.

Upon the arrival of winter, many people wonder about how to cope with dark skies and increased time spent indoors. The short days and long hours of darkness in fall and winter may cause increased levels of melatonin and decreased levels of serotonin, creating the biological conditions for depression.SAD also can inspire a craving for sugary foods or carbohydrates, which may be the bodys natural way to stimulate more serotonin production or get an energy boost. The following are some ways to feel more energized and upbeat despite the long hours of darkness. Spend as many hours as you can outside. When you wake up in the morning, open the curtains or blinds and soak up the suns rays. This can help you get some vitamin D and will also suppress melatonin production, which could make you feel drowsy. Invest in a light therapy lamp. How to Stay Occupied Upon the Arrival of the Long Nights of Winter
Outdoor activities do not need to end just because night is falling earlier

Adapting your exercise habits in the winter can help you make it through the colder months in great shape. There is no reason to stop exercising when the temperature drops. The American Heart Association says working out in the cold weather has distinct advantages over working out in hot and humid conditions. When the weather is cold, you may be able to work out longer and harder because the heat wont zap your energy levels, and exercising outdoors in the winter is a great way to get small doses of sunlight that can improve mood and help your body produce more vitamin D.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says exercise can help boost your immune system, which can KHOS\RXJKWFROGVDQGXV\PSWRPV-XVWDIHZPLQXWHVRIexercise each day can help prevent simple viral and bacterial infections as well.Working out in the winter may help you burn more calories than in warmer seasons. VETERANS POSTby Freddy Groves
High Demand Seamps Caregiver ProgramThe Government Account-ing Offi ce report Actions Needed to Address Higher-Than-Expected Demand for the Family Caregiver Pro-gram is grim. The report assesses the program that was established in 2010 to support family caregivers of seriously injured post-9/11 veterans. The program was to include a stipend equal to the cost of home health assistance, re-spite, training, health insur-ance for the caregiver and mental-health support. First, however, a caregiver must be approved and the veteran assessed.Fact: The Veterans Health Administration guesstimated that 4,000 caregivers would be approved for the program. Already 15,600 caregivers have been approved. The Department of Veterans Af-fairs medical centers havent been able to keep up with the workload. They put ONE support coordinator staffer in each medical center. Ad-ditionally, onsite nurses and physicians were to handle
home visits and medical as-sessments within a certain timeframe. They werent ready either, and some 500 caregivers are being added to the roster every month.Fact: The staff didnt have access to the workload data they needed to monitor the effects of the program be-cause the software was de-veloped to handle a much smaller program and there-fore might not be reliable.Fact: Since offi cials cant get good numbers and stats out of the program, theyre trying to get another IT sys-tem ... but dont know when theyll get it.Fact: At some clinics there just isnt enough staff to make home visits for the
assessment. Directors seethe caregiver program aseven more work and not ahigh priority. At one facility, the director refused to havenurses conduct home visitsfor the Family CaregiverProgram. And the numberof physicians willing to con-duct medical assessments for the program is limited. To read the whole report, goonline to gao.gov and putGAO-14-675 in the searchbox.

ACAF to host second annual trivia contest
Its trivia time in Alleg-any County. Do you know where was Elvis Presley born? What was Ronald Reagans fi rst media job? Do you know what state Mount Rushmore is lo-cated in? If you answered any of these questions, then perhaps you should organize a trivia team to become a champion.
After an enthusiastic response from last years event, the Allegany Coun-ty Area Foundation will host its second annual Trivia Contest on Friday, Oct. 24 at the Cuba VFW. Check in will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the contest will begin at 6:30 p.m.
The cost of this event is $30 per person for up to a team of six. Great food is included in this cost. Participants must be 21 years of age, and specta-tors are welcome for a $15
fee. The proceeds from this event will benefi t the foundations Dollars for Scholars Program.
Bob Mangles will be the master of ceremo-nies for this years trivia event. Craigg Brack and Lee Gridley will serve as the judges. Also, Peter OConnor will provide the music. Prizes provided by area merchants and orga-nizations will be awarded to the top fi nishers.
Last year there were 15 teams competing for the championship. After four tie-breaking rounds the 6 Ms from the Scio Cen-tral School were declared the winners. Second place went to the Scow Boys from Cuba Lake while the Challengers form Cuba took third place. The fourth and fi fth place fi nishers were the Middle Agers from Northern Alle-
gany County and SummitRealty of Cuba. Your teamcould be the fi rst place fi n-isher this year.
This year fi ve teamshave already registered tocompete. Those teams in-clude: The Jockey Street-ers, Angelica Somethings2014, Genesee ValleyEducators Association,Summit Auction and Real-ity LLC, and the District ILegislators team.
Fifteen to 25 teams areexpected to compete inthis years competition.
