Overview Nestled in the Caribbean Sea, just a stone’s throw from Florida to the north and Latin America to the south, Cuba has long struggled to find its place in the world, yet evokes romantic images of a bygone age. The country’s character was forged in the historical intricacies of colonialism, genocide, slavery, invasion and, most recently, populist revolution. Its enduring attraction comes from the indomitable spirit of the Cuban people, keeping their country alive through sheer ingenuity while the infrastructure crumbles around them. From the fields of cane producing the rum that fuels the ever-present salsa to the beautiful bays and beaches and the magnificent colonial architecture, Cuba enthrals with its exuberant politics and culture. Our 15-day itinerary commences in Havana, where Stephen has arranged for our group to meet with a local historian to learn first-hand about the history and colonial architecture of the city. Discover Hemingway’s favourite haunts and sample a Mojito cocktail, tour the waterfront in classic cars and discuss Cuban culture with local artists and writers. Travel to Santa Clara, site of Che Guevara’s penultimate revolutionary battle and see where Fidel Castro repelled the Batista regime at Santiago de Cuba. Discover the Spanish and French colonial cities of Trinidad, Camagüey and Cienfuegos, and travel the tobacco route to uncover the natural beauty of the Pinar del Río and Viñales Valley. Return to Havana and explore its vibrant arts scene, culminating in a night of Cuban song and dance.

Your tour leader Dr Stephen Wilkinson is Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at the University of Buckingham. Stephen first visited Cuba in 1986 and has been travelling to and writing about the island ever since. Now the Chairman of the International Institute for the Study of Cuba, based in the UK, Stephen has a PhD on the subject of Cuban literature. He has written numerous articles on diverse questions such as the history of

European and US–Cuba relations, Cuban attitudes and policy towards homosexuals, Cuban art and the nature of the Cuban state. Stephen’s book, Detective Fiction in Cuban Society and Culture, was published in 2006 by Peter Lang. Stephen is an experienced guide and tour leader to Cuba and frequently leads academic study groups and people-to-people exchanges to the island.

Tour Highlights

HAVANA Unravel the many facets of Havana’s 500 years of complex and often contradictory history. Wander through the atmospheric colonial streets ravaged by revolutions and embargoes, and feel the rhythm of the salsa along the palm-fringed waterfront and in the traffic free squares of Havana Vieja. Discover a thriving contemporary arts scene and a culture of creativity in the city’s galleries, cafes and bars.

MEET THE LOCALS As Chairman of the International Institute for the Study of Cuba and through many years of travel, your tour leader has fostered many insightful connections with locals living life in modern-day Cuba. During our time in Havana, Stephen will introduce us to locals working in various endeavours, such as the arts, history and politics, enabling us to gain an insight into life in Cuba.

NATURAL BEAUTY Discover Cuba’s verdant natural landscapes and ecological reserves. Ascend La Gran Piedra in the Bocanoa National Park through native orchids and ferns, and gaze out over the Sierra Maestra. Travel through the fertile farmlands of the Sugar Cane Valley, lifeblood of the local rum industry, and traverse the tobacco route through the World Heritage-listed Viñales Valley to Pinar Del Rio.

REVOLUTION AND INDEPENDENCE Much of the island’s identity has been shaped through its wars of independence against the Spanish, and Castro’s anti-colonialist revolution. Travel to Santa Clara, rarely visited by tourists, where Che Guevara’s army faced off against the forces of the dictator Fulgencio Batista, ultimately defeating the regime. We visit the grave sites of Fidel Castro himself and Cuba’s great independence hero, Jose Martí.

COLONIAL CITIES Step back into Cuba’s colonial history and examine the influence of Spanish conquistadors and French émigrés. From the elegance of Cienfuegos, ‘the pearl of the south’, to the port and former pirates’ haven of Trinidad, where time appears to have stood still since 1850, and the maze of streets, hidden plazas and baroque churches of Camagüey, all World Heritage-listed cities.

Meet your fellow tour participants and the tour leader in the hotel in the early evening before our welcome dinner. Overnight Havana (D)

Sunday 1 March Colonial Havana

We commence at the Maqueta de la Habana, a scale model which provides an overall perspective of the city. After lunch in a local restaurant we embark on a walking tour through the alleys and squares of Old Havana, including the Plaza de Armas and the small Museo el Templete. The Palace of the Generals is a fine example of baroque Cuban architecture built in the 1770’s and having served several purposes over its lifespan. It houses the City Museum and a fine collection detailing events from Cuban history. Cathedral Square is the newest of the city’s four squares and is where we visit the Cathedral of San Cristobal. We stop in to see Hemingway’s room at the Ambos Mundos Hotel and enjoy a mojito cocktail on the roof. Our welcome dinner this evening is in Paladar, ‘La Guarida’, location of the film, Strawberry and Chocolate. Overnight Havana (B, L, D)

We continue to Trinidad with lunch on the way. Upon arrival we explore the city and take a guided tour through the opulent Palacio Brunet. Today we board an old steam train dating from 1906 and travel through the Sugar Cane Valley on to the sugar mills at Izanaga, where there is the opportunity to ascend the tower built by the sugar-rich Iznaga family to keep watch over their slave workers. After a lunch in Izanaga we continue to Camagüey. Dinner this evening is at La Campana de Toledo, a well-regarded restaurant located in a colonial setting. Overnight Camagüey (B, L, D)

We tour Camagüey’s labyrinthine streets this morning on bicycle taxis, exploring the elegant city squares and plazas, and stop in at a working artist’s studio. tourist trail. We learn of the town’s importance during the independence wars on a guided tour with a visit to the museum. Now a national monument, it was constructed and used as a barracks for the Spanish army during the wars. After lunch in Holguin we head into the hills to the village of El Cobre, famous for its basilica. The basilica is Cuba’s most sacred pilgrimage site and the shrine of the nation’s patron saint, Our Lady of Charity, revered for saving the lives of three local fishermen caught in a violent storm. Arriving in Santiago de Cuba this evening there is dinner in the hotel. Overnight Santiago (B, L, D)

Sunday 8 March Santiago

Santiago de Cuba is considered Cuba’s cultural capital and has been instrumental in the evolution of the country’s music, literature, architecture and politics. A melting pot of Afro-Caribbean culture, it is the place where the country’s rebellions originated. We visit the Santa Ifigenia cemetery, where Fidel Castro and many other leaders of the wars of independence, including the national hero, Jose Martí, are buried. We also witness the changing of the guard. We take a guided tour of Moncada Barracks where Castro’s revolutionaries made their first attack against the Batista regime. After lunch on Cayo Granma Island we visit San Juan Hill, the site of a decisive battle under the command of Theodore Roosevelt during the Spanish-American war. Later we tour San Pedro del Morro, overlooking Santiago Bay, an impressive citadel built in 1633 to protect the city against pirates. Overnight Santiago (B, L)

Monday 9 March Santiago

Today we head to La Gran Piedra (The Great Stone) in the Bocanoa Park Biosphere Reserve about 25kms from Santiago. The ascent of more than 400 steps to the top takes us through vegetation typical of the area, including native species of orchids and ferns, culminating in spectacular views of the Sierra Maestre and the coast. Thursday 12 March Pinar Del Rio to Havana

The morning is at leisure. In the afternoon we visit the Museum de las Bellas Artes for a guided tour of Cuba’s National Art Gallery, arguably the best gallery in the Caribbean, featuring the most comprehensive collection of Cuban Art in the world. This evening we gather for a farewell dinner in one of Havana’s fine paladars before visiting the Fabrica del Arte Cubano (depending on opening schedules), a repurposed factory that now serves as an art gallery and night club. Overnight Havana (B, D)

Saturday 14 March Depart

The tour ends after breakfast at Iberostar Grand Packard Hotel in Havana. (B)

Hotels Embargoes and lack of infrastructure of many years mean the quality of hotels available in Cuba varies greatly from the cities to the more regional areas.
