Strips of paper with lines for Cub Scouts to read
Cub Scout #1 – Sometimes a local hero is obvious,
the policeman who risks his life to protect us from
violence or the fireman who pulls people out of burning buildings.
Cub Scout #2 – Other heroes that come to mind are the ambulance drivers,
paramedics, doctors and nurses who save lives every day.
Cub Scout #3 – Some people around us seem like regular people, but they are
heroes because they used to be soldiers in the military and served our country to
keep us free.
Cub Scout #4 – A hero is someone who does the right thing, even when they are
afraid of failure. They do it because it should be done.
Cub Scout #5 – Some heroes are harder to spot, but they are still there. My
heroes include the people who donate blood, teachers who spend their time and
energy helping kids, and kids who say “No” to drugs.
Cub Scout #6 – Heroes are all around us. Please join us in saluting all the heroes
by repeating with me the Pledge of Allegiance.

Super Hero to Super Scout
Materials:
Blank copy paper (1 sheet per Cub Scout)
Pencils/Crayons
Instructions:
Give each Cub Scout a piece of paper and something
they can use to draw or write. Have them fold the
paper in half twice – so that the paper is now divided
into four sections. Have them number each square – 1
to 4.
In the #1 square have each Cub Scout draw or write
something about their favorite superhero.
In the #2 square have each Cub Scout can draw or right about a real person who
they know is a hero. (You may need to give them some examples – like Mother
Theresa, Martin Luther King or Abraham Lincoln.)
In the #3 square have each Cub Scout choose a favorite community hero – such as
a fire fighter, teacher or parent. Have them draw or write about this community
hero.
In the #4 square have them draw or write about themselves and how they can be
a hero – or how they already are a hero.
Once Cub Scouts have finished drawing and writing, ask the Cub Scouts about
their hero squares. Give as many as Cub Scouts as possible the opportunity to
share who they included as their heroes and why they are heroes to them.
Fire Fighter’s Relay
Materials:
None
Instructions:
1. Divide the Cub Scouts into relay teams. Even teams
are a must for this game.
2. One Cub Scout from each team will stand on the
opposite side of the play area – he is the fire fighter.
3. When the leader gives the start signal, “FIRE, FIRE,”
the fire fighter from each team runs across the area to
where the team members are standing in order to save
his team members from the “burning building”. The fire fighter takes the first Cub
Scout on the team by the wrist or hand and runs with him back to the fire
fighter’s original position.
4. When the fire fighter and the rescued team member reach safety, the rescued
Cub Scout becomes the fire fighter and goes back to rescue the next team
member in line.
5. Rescue continues until all Cub Scouts have been brought to safety.
Variation – Instead of just running back and forth, the fire fighter and the rescued
Cub Scouts could have to crawl back for a little bit or other obstacles could also be
put in their way as they try to get all of their team to safety.
Be Prepared Closing
Materials:

Cubmaster or Den Leader:
“Being a hero does not mean that you must risk
your own life. It can mean getting help, or
making a phone call to 911 to get the police,
fire department or an ambulance. The key is to
be smart and be quick. Sometimes there isn’t
much time. You can save a drowning person by
pulling them in with a life ring, and not become
a victim yourself by jumping in after them.
Many times an adult has been saved because a child knew how to call 911 in an
emergency and get help right away.
You never know when or where emergencies will happen. In Cub Scouts, we can
learn how to handle these situations. We don’t expect to get hurt and we don’t
expect to need first aid, but we are prepared just in case. So, do your best to be
prepared.”
