Servant LeaderAwards
Cornerstone students StephenWinkelman and Ashley DeWittreceived the Student LeaderAward during the Sept. 9convocation service on campus.
The award honors students“entering their senior year whohave demonstrated servantleadership on campus and/or inthe Grand Rapids community,”said Larry Rice, director ofcommunity life.
Both Winkelman and DeWitt willreceive a $1,000 scholarshipand $250 to donate to thecharity of their choice.
The award was founded whenWilliam Reichardt, its creator,wanted to recognize studentswho engage in“behind-the-scenes” volunteerwork, Rice said. Students are

Dr. Joe Stowell Publishes New Book Jesus Nation What does a Christian nation look like? In Dr. Joe Stowell’s newest book , he explainsJesus Nationsome of his ideas. “[It is about] facing the bewilderment of thinking that there has tobe something more to life than what I am experiencing,” saidStowell, president of Cornerstone University. “The realization thatI belong to an emerging nation of eternal proportions that dwarfsany earth bound identity, and I am learning to become an activeparticipant in the greatest nation ever.” He spent three years writing the 200-page book that was inspiredby his realization that he desired to belong to Jesus’s nation, andliving like the rest of the world means going nowhere fast.“I have a deep desire to help Jesus followers realize that we area part of his Kingdom and that as such we belong to a differentnation that has a culture of its own with different attitudes,perspectives and values,” said Stowell who has authored morethan 20 books. Stowell’s book further explores the Christian lifestyle and why it isso important to be a part of God’s Kingdom. “For too many Christians, our identity is shaped by the countrywe live in, the color of our skin, our economic standing and ourprofessions,” he said. “Jesus lifts us above all of that and givesus a new identity and a wonderful new way to live that reflectsJesus and his Kingdom. And while some of the Kingdom’s waysare rather radical, they are always the best way to live.”
New CU Provost Publishes Third Book Dr. Rick Ostrander, Cornerstone University provost, recentlyreleased Why College Matters to God: A Student’s Introduction
, published by Abileneto the Christian College ExperienceChristian University Press. “My book is intended to help Christian college freshmen getstarted right by helping them to understand the unique purposeand value of a Christian college education,” said Ostrander. “Thehealthy Christian college seeks to help its students grow in allareas of their lives – spiritually, emotionally, professionally. It'sabout educating the whole person as a disciple of Christ.” In his book, Ostrander explains what Christian higher education

Ostrander also draws on theinsights of a wide range of Christian philosophers, historians,scientists and theologians to affirm Christian higher education.
