For half a century, CUHK Business School has been committed to providing a world-class education and we pride ourselves in nurturing the next generation of global business leaders. CUHK pioneered Hong Kong’s first undergraduate business program and with this deep and rich history, the school’s alumni network, which comprises of more than 26,000 alumni is the most extensive in Hong Kong and the region.

CUHK Business School offers many opportunities to help our students to become global citizens, graduates who can succeed in a range of multicultural environments. Within the campus, students can further develop their multi-cultural skills and awareness by learning with our international cohort of students who come from over 29 different countries.

As well as developing the professional skills that can help our graduates to succeed in life after university, CUHK focuses on the holistic development of mind, body, soul and spirit. were held in academic year 2012/13147hours of experiential learning activities

Case CompetitionsCase competitions are traditionally one of the most significant events in the academic life of a business student. Each year our students actively participate in local and international case competitions, in which they have to formulate a strategy to a given real-life business situation and present it before a panel of judges comprising top business professionals.

In case competitions, you have to use everything in your arsenal from professional business knowledge to general analytical and presentation skills. Participating in these competitions gives you the opportunity to interact with and learn from business professionals and to expand your networks beyond campus.

Every year, to prepare you for case competitions, we organize the Academic Cup to help train your ability to apply theories to real business cases. It provides a chance for you to test your abilities with guidance from the faculty. Participation also helps you and your teammates to develop a better understanding of each other’s strengths and to practice effective cooperation strategies. The winning teams will have a chance to represent CUHK in local or international case competitions.

to Real BusinessExposure What do our students say?

Sam Zheng (Integrated BBA Program, Year 4)Q Why is internship so important to you despite having already learnt

everything in class?

A “I regard internship as an extension of study. Though I learned Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) in university, only during my internship at IBM that I understood how powerful it is. For example, it can reduce working time for rebating calculation process from two days to half a day. It’s easy to learn the theories in class but only by putting learning to use can one truly grasp the magic.”

Issac Chan (Professional Accountancy Program, Class of 2013)Q Has your internship experience changed your work attitude?

A "I was a summer analyst at Morgan Stanley and was greatly inspired by their multinational culture. With several Europeans in my team, the team culture was different from HK's tradition. HK employees usually follow seniors' instructions and simply get the job done. But my French manager encouraged me to ask questions and even challenge my seniors. I was not only expected to complete the tasks, but also to think of ways to work more efficiently. This experience taught me that working hard is not enough. Working smart is equally essential."

Christoffer Clement (Quantitative Finance Program, Year 3)Q Can you describe one unforgettable lesson that you learned during your

internship?

A "One incident I will definitely remember occurred in a morning meeting during my internship at Nomura in equities trading. I was suddenly asked to share a trading idea which I wasn't prepared for. Hence, my idea was quite weak. I was very disappointed in myself knowing that I didn't perform as well as I should have. However, I later came back with a new pitch which was actually sent out to clients. It taught me to always be ready and prepared because you never know when the opportunity to shine arises."

Tiffany Chiang (Hotel and Tourism Management Program, Year 3)Q Can you describe one incident that discouraged you during your

internship at Disneyland and what you learned from it?

A “I’ll never forget how a guest came up to me, looked me in the eye, and shook his raincoat to wet my costume. I asked why he did that and he answered, “I don’t know.” I was very discouraged but this incident taught me to adjust my feelings by recalling the happy moments. By remembering how my smile can brighten a guest’s day in the park I managed to stay positive. I believe this is very important in the hospitality industry.”

Company visitsCompany visits provide direct insights into how real businesses operate and opportunities to receive direct, practical advice from real-world management teams. Visits of this nature are core elements of, for example, programs such as the IBCE, which organizes orientation trips to leading enterprises in China.

Industry collaborationThrough close connection with industry partners, we are able to line up experts from different fields to conduct seminars for our programs, which would offer you a real picture of the nature of business. The “IBM Global Business Services – Business Consulting Course”, a four-month program taught by members of IBM’s top management is a case in point.

The Business School students also had the privilege to join the New World Navigator Business Mentorship Program, in which senior executives from the New World Development Company Limited were invited to provide advice and guidance to students and enhance their knowledge on business operation.

InternshipNothing compares to the experience of applying knowledge and learning the corporate culture of major companies. The internship programs lined up by the Business School provide opportunities for you to gain valuable on-the-job training and in-depth understanding of your targeted professions. Internship experience tends to facilitate a smooth transition from university studies to the workplace. Graduates who have completed internships often become formal and permanent employees of the companies where they have served their “apprenticeships”.

Among many others, our students have served internships with numerous internationally recognized organizations, such as:

Corporate Social Responsibility and EntrepreneurshipClass attendance and participation in student activities are, of course, important aspects of university life. However, at CUHK Business School, we attach equal importance to serving the community. Accordingly, our School encourages students to apply their professional knowledge and to repay the community by giving them full support to make their CSR business ideas a reality. With advice from our faculty members, some of our students have successfully launched their own social care projects.

Mrs. Bethy TamHead of Governance & Strategic Initiatives of Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) Ltd

"Many young people think their career development begins after they graduate from school. I, however, believe that my time of study at the CUHK was an important first step in my own career development. Apart from gaining academic knowledge from the classes, I learned a lot about communication, collaboration, leadership skills and how to exert influence during my days at CUHK. All these equipped me well for the business world."

Mr. Raymond LoChairman of BBA Alumni Association of CUHK

"I feel privilege to be a student and alumnus of CUHK. This partly reflects the pride that we all take in CUHK’s outstanding academic achievements, and also its noble vision for the sustainable development of our society. Now you have the chance to study at CUHK Business School and enjoy the great benefit of being inspired on your road to success. Just value this experience of a lifetime!"

Ms. Liza Wang co-founder and Account Director

of Guru Online“Differentiate yourself. Do something that has not been done before.” This lesson that I took away from the Entrepreneur class at CUHK Business School became my driving force when I started Guru Online in the era when the market for online advertising was completely nonexistent. When it comes to the latest trend in market, youngsters always have a competitive edge. Be confident to choose the path that fits yourself while immersing in the greater environment.”

Prof. Andrew Chan Director of the EMBA program, Head of Shaw College

"Many students enter the university in the hope of gaining professional knowledge and training. But mere knowledge is not adequate for developing a competitive position in the real-world marketplace. To perform effectively and efficiently at work, networking is essential.

As you strive for excellence in your studies, do not forget to reach out and connect with the people around you: fellow students, teachers, the school administrators, and, of course, our alumni. Treasure the friendships you develop here because you will soon realize that the bonds you forge here and the candid advice offered cannot be easily obtained in society nowadays."

Ms. Norris LamManaging Partner and President of

Forbes Private Capital Group Asia

"My first business was the tuck shop we ran as student associations in college. We opened when all other stores were closed and sold items that were not available anywhere else, making the shop popular and affording us the opportunity to practice the business skills developed in class.

The opportunities for overseas study offered by the Business School, such as conferences and exchange studies, also strengthened my international insight. Equally important was the School’s emphasis on Chinese culture and business, which gave me an advantage over foreign business students."
