Installation

UnpackingUnpacking Although your CU-910/920/930/940 is neither complicated nor difficult to operate, we recommend youtake a few minutes to read this brief manual and familiarize yourself with the important information regardingproduct features, setup and operation.

As with most electronic devices, we strongly recommend you retain the original packaging. In the unlikelyevent the product must be returned for servicing, the original packaging (or reasonable equivalent) isrequired.

InstallationEnvironmentNever place this product in an environment which could alter its performance or reduce its service life. Suchenvironments usually include high levels of heat, dust, moisture, and vibration.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS1. Read these instructions.2. Keep these instructions.3. Heed all warnings.4. Follow all instructions.5. Do not use this apparatus near water.6. Clean only with dry cloth.7. Do not block any ventilation openings. Install in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.8. Do not install near any heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other apparatus (including

amplifiers) that produce heat.9. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized or grounding-type plug. A polarized plug has two

blades with one wider than the other. A grounding type plug has two blades and a third groundingprong. The wide blade or the third prong are provided for your safety. If the provided plug does not fitinto your outlet, consult an electrician for replacement of the obsolete outlet.

10. Protect the power cord from being walked on or pinched particularly at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the apparatus.

11. Only use attachments/accessories specified by the manufacturer.12. Use only with the cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table specified by the manufacturer, or sold with the appa-

ratus. When a cart is used, use caution when moving the cart/apparatus combination to avoid injury fromtip-over.

13. Unplug this apparatus during lightning storms or when unused for long periods of time.14. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. Servicing is required when the apparatus

has been damaged in any way, such as power-supply cord or plug is damaged, liquidhas been spilled or objects have fallen into the apparatus, the apparatus has beenexposed to rain or moisture, does not operate normally, or has been dropped.

Connecting your Speaker SystemConnecting your Speaker SystemAlways switch off the power to the amplifier before connecting speakers.

Choosing the Correct Speaker CableIt is important to choose cabling designated for audio use and good quality connectors. Using guitar cableor zip cord(designed for lamps and other electrical use) or poor quality connectors will degrade your loud-speakers' audio performance. For distributed loudspeaker systems, we recommend stranded twisted pairspeaker cable with and overall vinyl jacket (plenum rated when installed in required installations).

Always use the appropriate gauge of speaker cable. For cable runs of less than 25 feet (7.5 meters), 18-gauge cable is adequate. For longer cables, we suggest 16-gauge stranded cable.

Speaker Connection ProceduresAfter removing approximately 10mm (1/4-inch) of insulation from the ends of the speaker cables, twist thestrands tightly and when twist together with the distribution cable(s), using an appropriate cable connector.Make certain the wires do not protrude form the cable connector and touch any metal on the speaker chas-sis, or any other adjacent metal.Connect speaker wires to the appropriate terminals for your mode of operation, as shown in the illustration below.

Maintaining Proper PolarityIt is very important to wire your speakers consistently in order to maintain proper polarity. All quality cablesare manufactured with clear markings to identify the different conductors - normally by color-coding, print-ed markings, or textured ribbing on the cable's jacket material. Failing to do so will cause your speakers tooperate out of phase, resulting in significantly reduced low-frequency output from your system.

Choosing the Correct AmplificationWhen selecting an amplifier for use with your distributed speaker system, it is important to choose anamplifier that has sufficient power output.Choosing an amplifier that does not have adequate rated power may result in pushing the amp beyond itslimits, producing distortion or “ clipping” of the signal. This can irritate the listener and may cause damageto the speaker.Choosing an amplifier that is over-powered can result in over-driving the speaker system.

Using Multiple LoudspeakersIt is important to consider the overall speaker load (impedance) when connecting distributed speaker sys-tems to an amplifier. Some distributed loudspeakers are marked in load impedance; others show thewattage taps. Whatever the, case, it is easy to compute the total impedance (or wattage load) that is possi-ble for a given amplifier.
