Computa(onal Tools and Techniques for Ci(zen Science and Scien(fic Outreach Public participation in scientific research takes many forms: participation of volunteers in citizen science projects, monitoring of natural resources and phenomena, volunteering of computational resources for distributed data analysis tasks, etc. The purpose of this session is to serve as a forum for discussion of the computational tools, techniques and case studies of applications that enable active public participation in scientific research. Such tools could include data access interfaces, analysis tools, and discussion platforms. Of particular interest are applications that showcase the benefits of letting the public use the professional resources (i.e., the same data and computational resources that the scientists have access to) and return something back to the research behind it, such as applications that go beyond simple publication of scientific data or applications that use novel methods for user engagement. Examples of applications for scientific outreach that use specialized computational tools or techniques, and/or educational approaches, are also of interest. We encourage the participation of both researchers, designers and developers of citizen science tools and techniques and researchers from any area that could benefit from involving citizen scientists. Topics Applica’ons of ci’zen science (with emphasis on computa’onal tools and techniques). Architectures for scien’fic data distribu’on for public use. Architectures and systems for volunteer data collec’on and repor’ng. Models, algorithms and applica’ons for knowledge extrac’on from volunteerobtained data and learning from users’ experience. Models, algorithms and applica’ons to enable the most skillful and enthusias’c volunteers to contribute in deeper ways. Data valida’on techniques. Novel techniques and tools for user engagement. Specialized hardware or user interfaces for data acquisi’on by volunteers. Analysis of interac’on of volunteers with the project (logging, traffic metrics, etc.) Metrics and techniques for measuring the impact if ci’zen science for the research and for the volunteers. Applica’ons in volunteer sensing, e.g. urban compu’ng or collabora’ve cartography. Security and privacy issues and solu’ons. • Computa(onal Tools and Techniques for Ci(zen Science and Scien(fic Outreach

Public participation in scientific research takes many forms: participation of volunteers in citizen science projects, monitoring of natural resources and phenomena, volunteering of computational resources for distributed data analysis tasks, etc.

Topics Applica'ons of ci'zen science (with emphasis on computa'onal tools and techniques). Architectures for scien'fic data distribu'on for public use. Architectures and systems for volunteer data collec'on and repor'ng. Models, algorithms and applica'ons for knowledge extrac'on from volunteer-obtained data and learning from

users experience. Models, algorithms and applica'ons to enable the most skillful and enthusias'c volunteers to contribute in

deeper ways. Data valida'on techniques. Novel techniques and tools for user engagement. Specialized hardware or user interfaces for data acquisi'on by volunteers. Analysis of interac'on of volunteers with the project (logging, traffic metrics, etc.) Metrics and techniques for measuring the impact if ci'zen science for the research and for the volunteers. Applica'ons in volunteer sensing, e.g. urban compu'ng or collabora've cartography. Security and privacy issues and solu'ons.

Important Dates March 25th, 2014 (Extended): Deadline for Abstract and Full Paper submission. April 10th, 2014: No'fica'on of Acceptance and Early-bird Registra'on starts. May 6th, 2014: Early-bird Registra'on ends. May 6th, 2014: Submission deadline for the camera-ready version of the Papers. June 30th-July 3, 2014: ICCSA 2014 Conference.
