1. All electric cars to have green
number plates
The Union Government has asked state
transport departments to ensure that all battery-operated vehicles (both existing
and new) have green number plates
immediately.
In August 2018, the road transport ministry
had introduced the new number plate for all
battery-operated or electric vehicles (EVs).
The transport ministry‟s missive to states is
aimed at indicating that the government is
serious about pushing green mobility across
the country.
The government has done away with permits
for vehicles running on battery and other
alternative sources of fuel like methanol and
bio-fuel.
2. India Ratings & Research Lowers
Growth Forecast For 2019-20 To
7.3%
India Ratings & Research (A Fitch Group
Company) has lowered the country‟s growth
forecast for the current fiscal to 7.3%,
(earlier projection of 7.5 %).
The agency has listed three key reasons for
lowering its projection.
Prediction of lower-than-normal monsoon for
2019 and the continued agrarian distress.
The loss of momentum in the industrial
output growth, especially manufacturing and
electricity, is likely to hurt growth.
The slow progress in cases referred to the
National Company Law Tribunal under the
Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016, for
resolution of the non-performing assets of
the banking sector becoming a long-drawn-
out process.
3. Meghalaya: GSI North Eastern
Region installed geological
display boards at Mawmluh
cave, Therriaghat
In Meghalaya, the Geological Survey of
India (GSI) North Eastern Region (NER)
installed two geological display boards at
two important geological sites in the State

help in creating awareness among visiting
tourists, students and the general public.
The boards are unveiled at Mawmluh cave
and Therriaghat, Sobhar in East Khasi Hill
District.
Mawmluh cave made headlines earlier as
high resolution stable isotopic studies of
the stalagmites from the cave have shown
that there was a major climatic event about
4200 years ago.
4. India 4th Biggest Military
Spender in 2018: SIPRI report
According to the latest report from
the Stockholm International Peace
Research Institute(SIPRI), India was the
world‟s fourth biggest military spender in
the year 2018 behind the United States,
China, and Saudi Arabia.
The global military spending is 2.1% of the
world GDP.
The US spending went up by 4.6% to reach
USD 649 billion in 2018.
China went 5% more to reach USD 250
billion, which is 10 times higher than the
amount spent by Beijing in 1994.
India accounts for 3.7% of the global
defence spending.
5. Former ISRO Chairman awarded
France‟s highest civilian honour
Mr. A S Kiran Kumar (Former ISRO
chairman) was conferred with France‟s
highest civilian honour, Chevalier de
l‟Ordre national de la Legion d‟Honneur.
He was awarded for his contribution to
India-France space cooperation.
Kumar was the chairman of the Indian Space
Research Organisation (ISRO) from 2015 to
2018.
Currently, He holds the Chair of the ISRO
Committee on Earth Observation Satellites.
6. Government and IIT-Delhi to set
up a Centre of Excellence for
waste to wealth technologies
The Govt of India and Indian Institute of
Technology Delhi (IIT) Delhi have signed a
Memorandum of Understanding in New
Delhi for setting up a Centre of Excellence
for Waste to Wealth Technologies, to
commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of
Mahatma Gandhi.
The partnership will provide an effective
platform for stakeholders to bring together
integrated approaches for effective
recycling, reuse and resource recovery of
waste.

7. The Netherlands becomes the
third largest foreign direct
investor in India
The Netherlands has emerged as the third
largest foreign direct investor in India
during 2017-18, with investments pegged at
about USD 2.67 billion across sectors.
The Netherlands was also the second largest
destination for foreign investment by Indian
companies, after Singapore, with
investments worth USD 12.8 billion in 2017.
The objective of the dialogue was to
strengthen the business partnership
between India and the Netherlands in times
of rapid technological changes.
The Indian School of Business (ISB),
Hyderabad, and the Netherlands Business
Support Office in Hyderabad jointly
organised the „Dutch-India Dialogue on
Trade & Technology‟ in connection with the
National Day celebrations of the
Netherlands.
8. Environment Ministry Constitutes
Committee to implement National
Clean Air Programme
The Union Environment Ministry has
constituted a committee to implement the
National Clean Air Programme (NCAP),
which aims to reduce particulate matter (PM)
pollution by 20%-30% in at least 102 cities
by 2024.
The committee will be chaired by the
Secretary, Union Environment Ministry. It
would be headquartered in New Delhi.
9. Foreign exchange reserves rise by
4.3 Billion
According to RBI data, the country's foreign
exchange reserves soared by USD 4.368
billion to USD 418.515 billion in the week to
April 26.
Foreign currency assets rose by USD 4.387
billion to USD 390.421 billion.
According to the data Gold reserves
remained unchanged at USD 23.303 billion.
The special drawing rights with the
International Monetary Fund was down by
USD 5.9 million to USD 1.449 billion.

The country's reserve position with the Fund
also declined USD 13.6 million to USD 3.341
billion.
Foreign exchange reserves (FX reserves) are

10. Indian Navy launches fourth
Scorpene class submarine
Indian Navy‟s fourth stealth Scorpene class
Submarine Vela of Project 75 has been
launched at the Kanhoji Angre Wet Basin of
Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) in Mumbai,
Maharashtra.
The submarines are being built at Mazagon
Dock Limited, with the main collaborator
being M/s Naval group, France.
The submarine has been named „Vela‟ after
an earlier submarine, which was the lead
submarine, of the erstwhile Vela class, the
second batch of the Foxtrot class
submarines acquired from erstwhile USSR.
INS Vela was first commissioned on
31st August 1973 in the Indian Naval service
and continued to serve for 37 years.
11. Chandrayaan-2 to be launched
in July this year
According to ISRO (Indian Space Research
Organisation), India's second lunar mission
Chandrayaan-2 will be launched on a day
between 9 and 16 July this year.
Chandrayaan-2‟s lander will touch down
near the Moon's south pole on 6th
September.
The National space agency said
Chandrayaan-2 will have three modules in
it, an orbiter, a lander named Vikram and a
rover known as Pragyan.
Chandrayaan-2 will be launched using
India's most powerful rocket GSLV-Mark-3

The West Bengal Government has
organised a special musical programme in Kolkata to pay tributes to Gurudev
Tagore.
Rabindranath Tagore was the Author of
the "profoundly sensitive, fresh and
beautiful verse" of Gitanjali.
He became in 1913 the first non-European
to win the Nobel Prize in Literature.
His compositions were chosen by two
nations as national anthems: India's Jana
Gana Mana and Bangladesh's Amar Shonar
Bangla. Tagore is sometimes referred to as "the
Bard of Bengal".
13. IIT-B researchers develop
„Made in India‟ microprocessor
Engineers from the Indian Institute of
Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) have
developed a microprocessor called AJIT, the
first to be conceptualised, designed,
developed and manufactured in India.
It can be used inside a set-top box, as a
control panel for automation systems, in a
traffic light controller or even robotic
systems.
The project was funded by the Ministry of
Electronics and Information Technology
(MeitY) and IIT Bombay.
14. National Technology Day being
celebrated in India
The „National Technology Day‟ is
observed every year on the 11th of May in
India, acting as a reminder of the
anniversary of Shakti.
On May 11, 1998, India successfully test fired the Shakti-I nuclear missile at the Indian
Army's Pokhran Test Range (in Rajasthan) in
an operation led by aerospace engineer and late President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.
India conducted five underground nuclear
tests at Pokhran test range in Rajasthan, on
11th and 13th of May in 1998.
The first nuclear test Pokhran with a
codenamed as „Smiling Buddha‟ was carried
out in May 1974.
15. DRDO conducts a successful
flight test of ABHYAS
Defence Research and Development
Organisation (DRDO) conducted a successful
flight test of ABHYAS - High-speed Expendable
Aerial Target (HEAT) from Interim Test Range,
Chandipur in Odisha.

The flight test was tracked by various RADARS
and Electro Optic Systems and proved its
performance in a fully autonomous waypoint
navigation mode..
The performance of the system was as per
simulations carried out and demonstrated the
capability of ABHYAS to meet the mission
requirement for a cost-effective High-speed
Expendable Aerial Target.
16. Young Scientist Programme
'Yuvika2019' inaugurated
The Young Scientist Programme
„Yuvika2019‟ was inaugurated by Indian
Space Research Organisation (ISRO)
Chairman Dr K Sivan, through video mode
in Bengaluru.
The two-week residential summer vacation
programme spread over four ISRO centres
in Bengaluru, Thiruvananthapuram,
Ahmedabad and Shillong are attended by
110 students.
The participants will be visiting the
spaceport of India, Satish Dhawan Space
Centre in Shri harikota during this
programme.
17. India to co-chair Consultative
Group (CG) of Global Facility for
disaster reduction & recovery
India has been unanimously chosen as co-chair of the Consultative Group (CG)
of Global Facility for Disaster Reduction
and Recovery (GFDRR) for the fiscal year
2020.
It is a grant-funding mechanism, managed
by the World Bank, that supports disaster
risk management projects worldwide.
India‟s candidature was backed by its
consistent progress in disaster risk
reduction in the country and its initiative to
form a coalition on disaster resilient
infrastructure.
GFDRR is a global partnership that helps
developing countries better understand
and reduce their vulnerability to natural
hazards and climate change.
India became a member of CG of GFDRR in
2015 and expressed its interest to co-chair
during the last meeting of the group held in
October 2018.

18. Election Commission curtails
campaigning in West Bengal
Election Commission curtailed the
campaigning in the West Bengal
state following Kolkata violence.
Campaigning for the seventh and last phase
of Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal will
end at 10 PM tonight.
According to Deputy Election
Commissioner Chandra Bhushan Kuma, for
the first time, such an action (Article 324)
has been taken using constitutional powers
of the poll panel.
Nine Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal will go
to polls in the last phase on Sunday.
The Commission also ordered the removal
of State's Principal Secretary (Home) Atri
Bhattacharya and Additional Director
General, CID, Rajeev Kumar from their
posts.
19. MoU signed for plantation of
Rudraksha Trees in Uttarakhand
As a part of CSR initiative under
the Namami Gange Programme,
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU was
signed between National Mission for Clean
Ganga, HCL Foundation and INTACH for
taking up a project of Plantation of
Rudraksha Trees in Uttarakhand
The project aims at planting 10 thousand
Rudraksha trees in the catchment area of
river Ganga in Uttarakhand in association
with the local community and other
stakeholders.
It will also help in generating income for
people residing in those areas.
Namami Gange Mission aims at providing
comprehensive and sustainable solutions
for a cleaner ecosystem along the stretch of
97 towns and over 4 thousand 4 hundred
villages on the Ganga stem.
20. Sikkim celebrates its
foundation day
On 16th May 1975, Sikkim became a part of
Indian state after the 36th Constitutional
Amendment.
During the British rule in India, the kingdom
of Sikkim enjoyed a sovereign status with
British protectorate against the neighbouring countries Nepal and China.
This „subordinate alliance‟ with the British
was carried on by the newly formed Indian
government after 1947.

The Government of India (GoI) has
declared 16th May as National Dengue
Day to mark the toll from the deadly
disease „Dengue‟ (transmitted by the bite of
Aedes mosquito).
The day has been taking in terms of lives
and to reaffirm nationwide efforts to tackle
the scourge by using both education and
medical intervention.
Dengue is a viral disease which includes
symptoms such as high-grade fever 2 to 7
days and headache, vomiting, muscle and
joint pains, and a characteristic skin rash.
22. Paytm launches Credit Card in
partnership with Citi Bank with
Universal Unlimited Cashback
Indian digital wallet company Paytm has
tied up with American card company
Citibank to launch a credit card called
„Paytm First Card‟.
The card will offer minimum assured one
per cent “universal unlimited cashback” on
all transactions to customers along with no
restrictions on earning categories.
Paytm First Card will have an annual fee of
Rs. 500, with the facility of a full waiver of
annual fee on spends exceeding Rs 50,000
per year.
It is the first card of its kind card launched
in India by Citi as well as the first white-
label credit card to offer unlimited one per
cent cash-back.
23. NSG commandos summit Mt
Everest in maiden attempt
Commandos of the premier counter-terror
force National Security Guard (NSG) scaled
the Mount Everest (world‟s highest peak) in
their maiden attempt.
A seven-member team of NSG, led by Lt Col
J P Kumar, successfully unfurled the Indian
flag at the 8,848-metre tall peak. The NSG commando team was flagged off
by Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba on March
29 from New Delhi.
This is the first expedition of the NSG to the
Mount Everest and the force has been
preparing for it since 2017.

24. International Army Games to
be held in India for the first time
in Rajasthan
India will host a part of the International
Army Games at Jaisalmer to promote
cordial relations with the participating
countries (from 24 July to 17 August 2019).
The event will witness the participation of
the Mechanised Infantry Scout Teams of
eight countries including Russia who is the
founding member of this format of
International Army Games.
International Army Games is an
international military sports event
organised by the Ministry of Defense of the
Russian Federation since 2015 and is
participated by around 32 countries.
The 2019 event will be held in 32 disciplines
and hosted by 10 countries including
Russia, India, China, Azerbaijan, Armenia,
Belarus, Iran, Mongolia, Uzbekistan and
Kazakhstan.
25. Govt plans introducing
artificial intelligence system in
MCA 21 portal
The Union government has planned to
introduce artificial intelligence system in the MCA 21 portal as it seeks to make the
compliance process easier as well as ensure
routine enforcement activities are done
round-the-clock on autopilot basis.
MCA 21 is the electronic backbone for the
dissemination of information to all
stakeholders, including the regulator,
corporates and investors.
All filings under the company‟s law are
submitted to the ministry through this portal.
According to the Ministry of Corporate Affairs Secretary Injeti Srinivas, the
ministry would like to introduce Artificial
Intelligence in MCA 21 when version 3 of the
portal is rolled out in about a year's time.
26. India-Singapore Naval drill
begins in the South China Sea
The Navies of India and Singapore are
participating in the annual maritime
bilateral exercise „SIMBEX-19‟ in the South
China Sea.
According to the Indian Navy, Various

aerial or surface targets, advanced aerial
tracking, coordinated targeting exercises

Minister Rajiv Gandhi was killed in Tamil

29. Kerala first Indian state to tap
into masala bond market
The Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund
Board‟s (KIIFB) celebrated its debut Masala
Bond listing on the London Stock Exchange
with a special market open ceremony.
Kerala is the first Indian state to tap into the
market for masala bonds.
KIIFB (a state government agency) had
raised Rs 2,150 crore through its debut
masala bond issue.

honoured posthumously by UN
Indian peacekeeper Police Officer Jitender
Kumar is among the 119 military, police and
civilian personnel who will be honoured
with a prestigious UN medal 2019 for
courage and sacrifice in the line of duty.
Mr. Kumar made the supreme sacrifice
while serving in the United Nations
Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the
Central African country of Congo.
He will be honoured posthumously with the
Dag Hammarskjold Medal as the world
organisation observes the International Day
of UN Peacekeepers.
31. ISRO launches earth
observation satellite RISAT-2B
Indian Space Research
Organisation (ISRO) has successfully
launched its earth observation
satellite RISAT-2B (latest radar imaging
satellite) from Satish Dhawan Space
Centre Sriharikota (90 km north of
Chennai). It will replace the RISAT-2, which was
launched in 2009.
The 615 kg satellite was released into the
orbit 15 minutes after the lift-off. RISAT-2B meant for application in fields
such as surveillance, agriculture, forestry
and disaster management support.
RISAT-2B expanded Synthetic Aperture
Radar (SAR) making it an advanced earth
observation satellite, operating in spotlight
mode, mode and mosaic mode.
32. 8th Indo- Myanmar
Coordinated Patrol begins at Port
Blair
The 8th edition of the Indo-Myanmar
Coordinated Patrol (IMCOR) is being held
at Port Blair in Andaman & Nicobar
Command (from 20-28 May 2019).
Under the program, Myanmar ships UMS
King TabinShweHtee (773) and UMS Inlay
(OPV-54) are participating in the
coordinated patrol (CORPAT) along with
Indian Naval Ship Saryu.
The ships will patrol along the International
Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) between the

34. 2019 Lok Sabha polls record
highest-ever voter turnout in
history
According to tentative data released by the
Election Commission (EC), the 2019 Lok
Sabha elections clocked a record turnout of 67.11%, beating the previous turnout of
65.95% notched up in 2014.
However, the over turnout in the 2009
election, which stood at 58.19 per cent.
The highest voter turnout was recorded in
the first phase when 69.61 per cent of the
electorate voted. Among the states, Himachal Pradesh
registered a turnout of 72.25 per cent,
which is 7.8 per cent higher than the 2014
polls.
35. Jagan Mohan Reddy to be
sworn in as CM of AP on May 30
In Andhra Pradesh, YSR Congress Chief
Jagan Mohan Reddy will be sworn in as
chief minister of Andhra Pradesh on 30th of
this month at Vijayawada.
Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy has announced this
following his party achieving inching
towards a landslide victory in the legislative
elections for Andhra Pradesh Legislative

36. NHA to collaborate with cancer
grid
In the first such move to bring in uniform
standards of patient care to battle cancer,
the National Health Authority (NHA) and
National Cancer Grid (NCG) have signed an
MoU under the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan
Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY).
The NHA and NCG will now jointly review
existing cancer treatment packages, pricing
of services, and standard treatment
workflows covered under the AB-PMJAY,
and plug-in necessary gaps to ensure
enhanced quality of cancer care.
Indu Bhushan is a Chief Executive Officer
(CEO), Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY and the
National Health Authority.
37. ADB to provide USD 750 million
loans to India for railway track
electrification project
Asian Development Bank (ADB) has signed
an agreement to provide USD 750
million equivalent in Indian rupee long-
term financing to electrify railway tracks in
India.
It is the largest single non-sovereign loan
ever committed by ADB to Indian Railway
Finance Corporation (IRFC) to fund the
railways track electrification project.
IRFC will use the proceeds from the loan to
install electric traction equipment along
about 3,378 kilometres of existing railway
lines to enable migration of passenger and
freight traffic from diesel to electric traction.
38. DRDO test fires guided bomb
from Sukhoi combat jet
Defence Research and Development
Organisation (DRDO) has successfully test-
fired an indigenously developed 500 kg class guided bomb from a Sukhoi combat
jet at Pokhran in Rajasthan.
The test firing of the guided bomb came two
days after the Indian Air Force successfully
test fired the aerial version of the
supersonic BrahMos cruise missile from a
Sukhoi jet at the Andaman and Nicobar
Islands.

39. Isro's new commercial arm
NewSpace India officially
inaugurated
NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), the
commercial arm of Indian Space Research
Organisation (Isro), was officially
inaugurated in Bengaluru on 23 May 2019.
It was inaugurated by Isro's honorary
adviser, Dr K Kasturirangan in the
presence of chairman Dr K Sivan.
Capital - NISL is provided with an
authorised share capital of Rs 100 crore
and initially paid-up capital of Rs 10 crore.
NSIL's main objective is to scale up industry
participation in Indian space programmes.
40. India on US watch list for
currency practices
The US has added India to its monitoring list
for currency practices and macroeconomic
policies, alleging undervaluation in its
currency.
The semi-annual report on the US‟ trade
partners‟ macroeconomic and foreign
exchange policies, monitors any unfair
currency practices.
The monitoring list comprises China, Japan,
Korea, Germany and Switzerland. India is
the latest addition in the report published
last month
41. India‟s economy to grow 7.5%
by 2020: OECD
According to the Organisation for
Economic Co-operation and Development
(OECD) Economic Outlook report, India's
economic growth will regain strength and
approach 7.5% by 2020 buoyed by rural
consumption and subdued inflation.
“Gross domestic product (GDP) growth in
India is projected to strengthen to close to
7.25% in FY19 and close to 7.5% in FY20,”.
The report suggested that an improved
collection of the Goods and Services Tax
(GST) and a wider base of personal income
tax will help reduce the high public debt-
to-GDP ratio

from Iran after US waivers
expired: Envoy
India has stopped importing oil from Iran
after American waivers granted to eight
buyers expired early this month.

Akash-1S is a new version of the missile

missiles from a distance of 18 to 30 km.
The Akash missile system has the capability
to neutralise aerial targets such as fighter
jets, cruise missiles and air-to-surface

The World Bank will extend more than half-

“ElectionGuard” to help countries ensure

The tool “ElectionGuard” will enable end-

The SHiELD is an Advanced Technology

for indigenous cattle and their crosses.
Buffaloes contribute more than 50% to the
total milk production in India which is the

Cyril Ramaphosa as the president of the

The African National Congress party won
