Confirmation

Confirmation is a sacrament in which

those who have been baptized receive

the fullness of the Holy Spirit, Whom

the Lord sent upon His apostles at Pen-

tecost. It is a sacrament that celebrates

God’s special strengths and gifts in

those who have been baptized.

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit help Chris-

tians live their lives more fully commit-

ted to Christ. You will learn about the Gifts of the Holy Spirit as

well as numerous other important facts about the Catholic Faith

this year.

You will have the opportunity to help your neighbor through ser-

vice in your community, church and family. You will choose a

Confirmation sponsor that will guide and help you along the path

to Confirmation.

This time of your life is a vital process in achieving greater under-

standing, appreciation and devotion to your faith. Remember,

Confirmation is a rite that you choose for yourself and one that you

commit to yourself, not your parents, pastor or catechists. Allow

the power of the Holy Spirit to move freely in your life.

As a Candidate for Confirmation you: Must freely choose to be confirmed

Must be in the state of grace

Attend Reconciliation regularly

Must have adequate knowledge of the Catholic faith

Participated in required learning sessions

Must be practicing your faith—attend mass

Are responsible for completing all required home study and

service projects

Must be aware of the initiation aspect of the sacrament of

Confirmation and be committed to continuing the faith-

ful practice and study of your religion

Must be willing to participate in the Confirmation program

of prayer, retreat, communal celebration of the sacra-

ment of Reconciliation, etc.

Sponsor Documentation due Wed. 9/20/2017

The Rite of Confirmation requires that each candidate have

an individual sponsor. It is desirable to choose as sponsor the

one who undertook the same function in baptism if availa-

ble. When choosing a sponsor, remember he or she must:

a) Support your commitment to a Christian life

b) Be at least 18 years old and willing to serve as a

life-long Christian influence on you

c) Belong to the Catholic church and be fully initiat-

ed themselves, having received Baptism, Confir-

mation and Eucharist

d) Obtain a statement of eligibility from Fr. Doug or

the pastor of their parish [If living with someone

must be married in the church “casado(a) por

la Iglesia”] e) is not the father or mother

Our Confirmation program requires that sponsors take

an active role in the formation process. Therefore, spon-

sors need to be available to . . .

attend a sponsor training session on Wednes-

day October 18 at 6:30pm at Christ the King

to meet and share with the candidate on a monthly

basis at least from October 2017 to October 2018.

to attend the “Calling of the Candidate” mass in

October 2018

to present the candidate to the Bishop at the Rite

of Confirmation.

Adoration

Our Confirmation class is committed to be with Jesus during

Eucharistic adoration for 1 hour 3rd Saturday of each month

from 9:00-10:00pm If you cannot attend according to the

schedule below it is your responsibility to find another candi-

date to trade dates with. We will have some praise and wor-

ship music and time for quiet devotion and reflection.

Growing through Service

Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members

of my family, you did it to me. Mt.25:40

Candidates are asked to: Participate in acts of loving service

to their family. Use talents and gifts to minister to peers.

Contribute to parish programs and engage in service to the

missions and/or the needs of the local community. Some

opportunities are planned on Wednesday nights in place of

class, but each candidate is responsible to serve in the 4 dif-

ferent areas listed above and reflect on their service.

One new service reflection should be completed at each of

the following dates: Nov. 15; Dec. 20; Feb. 21

All 4 service reflections due on April 25, 2018.

The purpose of requiring reflection on service projects for

our Confirmation candidates is two-fold:

1) It is a Christian duty to offer our gifts and talents for the

good of all.

2) By reflecting on their acts of service, it helps the candi-

dates to first recognize that they have gifts to offer the

community. Additionally, it also encourages them to ex-

amine how their actions affect their faith.

Mass Message—

The most cherished aspect of being a Catholic is participation in weekly Mass. The Eucharist is your most intimate sacrament and

brings you closer to Jesus than any other. Consequently, the church

asks Confirmation candidates to not only attend mass, but be atten-

tive to the mass. When you come to mass, listen to the readings and

to the Gospel. Take in the liturgy of the word and the liturgy of the

Eucharist with reverence and reflection. There is space below for

you to take notes on 15 masses throughout this academic year.

They do not have to be here at Christ the King You can attend any

mass in any Catholic church! If you think about it, that is only

about half of the weeks in this year. Please be sure to complete each

entry.
