A large closet in the bedroom provides plenty of storage. Even the floors are nice—hard surfaced and not slippery. The primary care clinic has not been forgotten. There is a new reception area and four new examination rooms. There is a new large physical therapy room with windows and plenty of room for Members to do their therapy and a big closet to store equipment that is not in use. The therapists’ offices are on the other side of a glass partition. To get back to the Etta James song, it may not be that at last our love has come along, but we are very happy to welcome something almost as good.

The DuBose expansion has been opened. And it’s very nice.

35,000 square feet have been added, more than doubling the DuBose Health Center. The open house on Thursday, August 8, showed us a beautiful airy space—two neighborhoods (or wings), Pine and Oak, with a two-story high hallway running through. The high windows in the hallway let in plenty of sunlight. There are 30 new, large rooms, 15 in each neighborhood. Six of these rooms are in three suites (or flex rooms); each suite has two sizable rooms, a very large bathroom, and an entry area, and can be used by one or two Members. Each new neighborhood has its own dining room with a view of the outdoors, and a living room. There is a satellite prep kitchen that will be shared by both neighborhoods keeping all meals served from the main kitchen at DuBose hot and fresh.

There is a large activity area that can be used for movies, lectures, and other group activities. It’s a versatile space. We saw it set with handsome tables and chairs used to serve refreshments. A combination of tables and chairs can be stacked and stored allowing for a variety of space for programs, some of which might be ones we now hold in the Clubhouse Ballroom, giving more flexibility for scheduling group activities. And there is a new courtyard, with both covered seating and a lawn area, accessible from both of the new neighborhoods.

Each large bedroom has a window and its own AC and heat, so temperature can be controlled by the Member. Each room includes a large bathroom with toilet and walk-in/roll-in shower and storage in the bathroom. The showers have both high and low showerheads that can be handheld. A large closet in the bedroom provides plenty of storage. Even the floors are nice—hard surfaced and not slippery.

The primary care clinic has not been forgotten. There is a new reception area and four new examination rooms. There is a new large physical therapy room

with windows and plenty of room for Members to do their therapy and a big closet to store equipment that is not in use. The therapists’ offices are on the other side of a glass partition.

To get back to the Etta James song, it may not be that at last our love has come along, but we are very happy to welcome something almost as good.

Northern Italy—From the Mediterranean to the Adriatic Seawith John NeterMonday, September 9, 3pm Ballroom

Our visit to Northern Italy begins in Santa Margherita on the dramatic Mediterranean coast of Northern Italy. It continues to Pisa with its famous Leaning Tower, Florence and its venerable Ponte Vecchio, Siena, home of its historic Palio, and Lago Maggiore with its diminutive Borromean Islands. The visit ends in Venice on the Adriatic Sea, well known for its famous canals.

Pitch, Harmonics, Octaves, and Timbre: Simple Physics and Math Can Explain How We Make and Perceive Musical Soundswith Tom CleggMonday, September 16, 3pm Ballroom

Why do a violin and a piano produce their recognizably unique sounds? What does it mean for a bass and a soprano to sing in unison? Listening to skilled musicians, even with our eyes closed, is often enjoyable. But listening while watching them carefully, and attempting to understand at least some of what they are doing to make their music sound pleasant to us, can greatly increase our enjoyment. This talk will utilize examples from common

musical experience, several hands-on physics demonstrations, and computer simulations employed routinely in UNC’s introductory physics classes for non-scientists. Collectively they can help explain what sound is, and how musicians with their instruments can produce the tonal and harmonic music we enjoy. Tom Clegg first joined UNC’s Physics and Astronomy faculty in 1968 and began research with students and faculty colleagues at the Triangle University Nuclear Laboratory at Duke. Though now retired from UNC, Tom still collaborates on research projects with colleagues in the lab at Duke. Nearly all of his instructional assignments during 48-years at UNC were in introductory physics classes and undergraduate teaching labs. There he regularly used many of the simple physics demonstrations and simulations that he plans to use in this talk.

Emeralds of Oz: Life Lessons from Over the Rainbow with Peter GuzzardiFriday, November 1, 3pm Ballroom

Emeralds of Oz: Life Lessons from Over the Rainbow is an uplifting treasure trove of life lessons drawn from one of the most beloved movies of all time. Published in synchrony with the 80th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz, Emeralds of Oz is also timely with its advice, as we make the journey alongside Dorothy from helpless to powerful, from fearful to courageous, from bedazzled by illusion to fully aware of life’s deepest truths. Peter Guzzardi spent decades as an editor

working with some of the brightest minds of our time—from Stephen Hawking to Deepak Chopra, from Carol Burnett to Douglas Adams, from Susan Cain to Paula Poundstone—yet he couldn’t shake the feeling that their genius felt oddly familiar. One day, he had an epiphany. All that wisdom had its roots in a film he’d watched as a child: The Wizard of Oz. Following the arc of this beloved movie, Guzzardi becomes our guide as we travel from Kansas to Oz and down the Yellow Brick Road, pointing out gems of insight large and small about longing, joy, compassion, fear, power, and faith in ourselves that open our eyes to a new way of navigating the world. Books will be available for purchase.
