EHS CTE Teachers leading the way in Professional development for all teachers!

Erin Mercs, FCS teacher, provided a session

titled “Building a Course in Canvas to Improve Student

Self-Pacing.” This course taught teachers the basics of how to build their own course in

Canvas from start to finish that is easy to

navigate for students and teachers and can be used from semester to semester.

Steve Smith, Business teacher, provided a

session titled Role Play or Real Day. During this session, teachers learned how to use

role plays and real life scenarios to improve teaching connections!

SHOUT OUT for CTE from Mrs. Henninger: To John Stewart, Carpentry teacher who never fails to help when needed. His

ability to fix computer carts is awesome, and that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Ms. Clark and Ms. Turner’s Career Management classes join forces to provide guest speaker opportunities!

Friday, February 8th, Career Management

hosted Madison Turner in the guest speaking series. Miss Turner is a 2014

Williams High graduate and a 2018 UNCG graduate. Miss Turner talked about her

career experience as a new college graduate. She detailed her negative

experience in the real world of work in her first adult job, problem solving to figure out what she truly

wanted to do, and how she got where she is today. "It's ok to try something and not like it. You have to

reevaluate, problem solve, look at your resources to determine what your next step might be." Miss Turner is

enrolled in graduate school at UNCG working on a Master's Degree in Library Science. She works part time cleaning

houses and is a Cheer Coach at Kidsport Gymnastics Academy.

February 15, Jennifer Wilson, Vet Tech at the Burlington Animal Shelter visited Career

Management classes. She shared how she uses Algebra daily to proper ly prescr ibe

medications for animals. She has a 2-year biology degree.

Here’s what Trevor Irby, a EHS senior, said about the presentation: “The presentation from Friday was very educational. If you didn’t already know about vets, then you would have learned a lot about them through the presentation. Even though I am not interested in being a vet, it helped me

better understand how impor tant their job is and how much animals mean to them. If you are thinking about being a vet

after high school, go talk to one and see if you think you would like it. “

Eagles step up to generate interest in Plumbing

Sean-Michael Joyce and Vicente Collazo, both

11th graders, signed up with Mrs. Johnson and enrolled in the plumbing continuing education classes this year through the College and Career Promise (CCP) at Alamance Community College (ACC). They talked with Mrs. Johnson about their

desire to volunteer and present their plumbing experience to students in hopes of

generating interest in the career field. Tuesday, Feb 19, they went into 7 classrooms to present. The projected growth of plumbers (2016-2026) is

much faster than average (15% higher) with a median wage of $25.28/hour (O*Net online).

Sean-Michael and Vicente discussed the types of classes at Alamance Community College, the

experience they are gaining and the opportunities available in this career field! They will receive a

certificate upon completion of the requirements which means they can often earn higher pay if

employed. Plumbers install and repair pipes that supply water and gas to homes. They also install

bathtubs, sinks, toilets and appliances.

There are other skilled trade programs at ACC:

Automotive, Cosmetology, HVAC, Machining and

Mechatronics Engineering to name a few!

EAHS Registration Fair February 21, 2019 Parents and students attended the Registration fair Thursday! Thirty minute sessions were held in the auditorium which covered high school graduation

requirements, college entrance requirements, how to be successful in AP/Honors

courses and Canvas/Powerschool. In addition, program areas had representation to answer

questions and share information. Of course ,CTE was rocking it with representation!!! We had

representation from the Business, Family and Consumer Science and Trade and Industrial program area and CTEC

as well as two of our student organizations: DECA and FCCLA!
