Blue LineThe Blue Line begins at O’Hare International Airport at the far northwest end of the city. After traveling through the Northwest Side, the Blue Line then makes its way through the Loop via the subway and across the West Side to its southwest end at Forest Park. It is one of the CTA’s busiest rail lines and one of the two lines to run 24/7.
The Blue Line serves as a vital link to various destinations ranging from O’Hare International Airport, Rosemont Convention Center, Allstate Arena and the James R. Thompson Center.

Green LineThe Green Line is completely elevated and is comprised of portions of the CTA’s most historic rail segments, that dates back to 1892. The western end of the line originates suburban of Oak Park, and the southern end has two branches that originate on 63rd Street in Chicago.
Monthly Ridership: 1,191,873
The Green Line caters to a widely diverse clientele including a heavy African American population, business professionals and students.

The Loop Overview

The LoopThe Loop is Chicago’s Major Business Center. Most specifically, the Loop refers to an area bounded by the CTA ‘L’ tracks. In general use it refers to the core of central business district, which is the second largest in the United States after Midtown Manhattan.
Skyscrapers dominate Loop architecture, which include the Chicago Board of Trade, Willis Tower, and the Lyric Opera House. This area also offers numerous shopping opportunities, such as the historic State Street Shopping District. Numerous government buildings are also within the Loop, including City Hall, the James R. Thompson Center and multiple federal buildings.

Orange LineThe Orange Line runs below grade and elevated tracks from downtown Chicago to the Midway Airport on the Southwest side. Orange Line stops all Loop elevated stations before returning Midway. The Orange Line’s main route consists of eight stations.

Pink LineThe Pink Line runs from the 54/Cermak station in West Suburban Cicero through the West Side of the city to the Loop in downtown Chicago. This line serves Chicago’s Pilsen and Little Village neighborhoods, which are rich in Hispanic culture.

Purple LineExtending south from the Wilmette terminal at Linden Avenue and passing through Evanston, the Purple Line covers the northernmost section of the rapid transit network. The Purple Line runs from Howard Red to the Loop during weekday morning and evening rush hours.

Red LineThe Red Line runs from Howard Street to 95th Street and the Dan Ryan Expressway on the South Side. On the North Side, the Red Line runs through neighborhoods such as Lincoln Park and Lakeview. This line runs as a subway between North/Clybourn and Roosevelt and above ground and parallel to the Dan Ryan Expressway on its South Side route.
Monthly Ridership: 4,798,798
Since the Red Line runs from one end of the city to the other, it is often referred to as the “backbone” of the CTA; and therefore, it serves a wide range of riders–locals, tourists, white collar workers, blue collar workers, sports fans and students.

Yellow LineThe CTA’s Yellow Line, begins at the Howard station and runs west and north to Skokie. With only two stations along the line, trains make the short five mile trip in virtually no time at all. In many ways, the Yellow Line more closely resembles a light rail operation rather than rapid transit.
