Your CDs, Talk to La Bomb and your self-titled, have been the office crack for a while.

We’re not those kind of music nerds. Though, with your albums, I think there’s a very clear line. Those two albums are quite different. Talk to La Bomb, as the name indicates, is definitely harder edged, I think.

Does Sabina get a lot of attention? When I recommend this CD, I apologise, but I just say, you’ve got to hear this singer – it’s this timeless, confident, gorgeous voice… and the music doesn’t suck.

I do sometimes think of the music when she’s on a language I don’t understand. Which would really be all of them.

Uh. You’re in the band.

This may sound like a stretch, but I was telling someone in Wisconsin about Brazilian Girls and I said, ‘Go to a good CD shop, and look for Björk. Brazilian Girls will be in the same section, just a little back.’

So you’re familiar with Icelandic music.

There are a lot of bands here. What I think musicians would appreciate is that most of the bands try to do something different from each other. Nobody wants to be like the next guy.

Do you think you’re in any danger of suffer-ing from overhype? You are from the art scene, and yet you’ve been celebrated in the New York Times, Rolling Stone, the AP. Do you get any reaction from your original base?

Assuming your name, Brazilian Girls, is based on an affinity for Brazilian culture, or maybe the eclecticism Brazil represents to the world, what would you choose for another country, a backup choice. Like Polish Boys, or something?

It’s a huckster’s vibe?

Well, I like both albums, and on a Sunday af-ternoon, I like that lounge feel of the first album. That album is extremely evocative, honestly. If it is based on a real-life lounge, that must be a pretty fucking cool place. Please, name and ad-dress of the lounge.

Okay, we’ve got the place. When exactly did this happen?

I’ve put some time in around Alphabet City in New York, and I met hip people, but not people who are this ridiculously hip. I mean, you listen to Brazilian Girls, and you’ve got five languages, and you’ve got friggin Neruda poetry.

You’re somewhat the anomaly among British pop bands, at least as far as I know. You broke into the big time with your live performance at the Philadelphia Live 8 stage. I typically think of British pop bands getting popular first based on image… a fashion shoot or something like that.

Is image bigger in the UK? Of course, hard to get perspective, I imag-ine. But do you feel there was a time when this wasn’t so essential?

I have. Have you thought of this: you’re going to hear your pop songs for the rest of your natural lives.

Can you tell us about the Cribs? You seem to have hand selected them for your upcoming tour. Why do the Kaiser Chiefs like the Cribs? Why bring a great live band and have them steal your thunder?

the Kaiser Chiefs. You came along just as Pete Doherty of Babybshambles was doing his drug abuse thing. I personally believe that Pete Doherty makes life as a human easier, as we can all fuck up, then point to Pete and say, “At least I didn’t do what he did.” Did Doherty take the pressure off the other bands? You didn’t seem to get touched with any negative press as you came along.

Here are the bands I hear when I listen to Employment, your first album, the influences: the Animals, especially in the keys, the Kinks and The Beach Boys. Seems like you have pretty different influences from the bands you’re lumped together with – I don’t hear such rootsy influence from other Britpop bands.
