Highlights

October 1, 2012

Panelists talked with high school girls from around Connecticut at a special dinner before The State of

Women 2012. Here, the group poses for a once in a lifetime photo!

On stage, Gloria Steinem, Connie Schultz, Ashley Judd, Michelle Bernard and moderator Michel Martin talked women’s rights, future generations, modern feminism and more.

YOU brought Neil deGrasse Tyson to Hartford. Tyson brought vision, brilliance and laughter to The CT Forum at our pre-Forum dinner for sponsors and donors.

Neri Oxman displayed her own unique brand of materials science on stage at Vision & Brilliance with fellow panelists Neil Gaiman, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and moderator John Dankosky.

Neil Gaiman made one YOUTH Forum student’s night when he gave her some sage advice about pursuing the arts...and then posted video of the moment to his almost 2 million Twitter followers!

Forum Board members Laura Donna and Bonnie Malley enjoyed cocktails and dinner at City Steam with James Wehr, President and CEO of The Phoenix Companies, and Tammy Wehr.

At our 20th Annual Hartford Children’s Holiday Party we celebrated with over 300 elementary school students from Hartford and over 100 high school students from around Connecticut.

YOUTH Forum students attended a special screening of the documentary film Divided We Fall, including discussion with filmmaker Valarie Kauer.

As a follow-up to the Our Fragile Earth Forum, we produced a report on nutrition in Hartford and convened key stakeholders

for further action.

Individuals from the community joined Forum staff before each Forum to help craft moderator outlines.

In September of 2012, The Forum collaborated with Our Piece of the Pie to bring Geoffrey Canada and other expertsexperts to the Shubert Theater in New Haven for a panel discussion about education.

The Bright Ideas Innovation Fund is an important new fund that supports innovation, testing, piloting, and the development of new “bright ideas.” In fact, The Connecticut Forum itself

was a “bright idea” 21 years ago.

“Another masterful event! Profoundly funny. Thank you!”

- Christine D. on A Meaningful Life

“I wish there was a Connecticut Forum in all 50 states.”

- Panelist Michelle Bernard in the YouTube clip “Backstage at The Forum...”

“The two greatest Neils in one room...Connecticut may implode.” @AllieStevens11 on Vision & Brilliance

“I think what makes The CT Forum so interesting is that it doesn’t just bring world class thinkers, creators, artists to

Connecticut, to Hartford, but it puts them into conversation with each other. So you’re never going to hear somebody say what they say at any other conference or staged event. There are going to be surprises. There are going to be

admissions. There are going to be people taking their shirts off and putting on Whalers’ memorabilia. And it’s all because off and putting on Whalers’ memorabilia. And it’s all because of this collision of minds that happens here.”

- John Hodgman (Panelist)-

“What an amazing Forum! The chemistry, wisdom, empathy, insight and humor of these brilliant women made for one of the best Forums EVER! I'm still in awe of the evening!

Congrats to all you fabulous Forum folks who made it happen!”- Laurie S. (Advisory Board Member & Donor)

on The State of Women 2012 -

“What a treasure the Forum is to Connecticut.”- Bill K. (Sponsor & Donor) -

“What a wonderful CT Forum this past Saturday. Amazing to see true brilliance and vision on the stage. Thanks for the great experience!”

- Paul P. (Sponsor) on Vision & Brilliance -

“I LOVED the YOUTH Forum! That you had 30 smart kids talking to us, and us getting to talk to them. For me, I learned just as much from them as I think they did from us.”- Neil Gaiman (Panelist) -

“Truly fantastic evening! My husband and I can't stop talking about it!”

- Melissa L.T. (Audience Member) on Vision & Brilliance -

People are talking about The Forum’s 2012-2013 Season!

I feel as though I’m a part of something that transforms this community a couple of nights each year... in Hart-ford, in these programs, you develop what is the most pow-erful, the most important, and sometimes the most lacking thing in the United States of America. And that is the sense of a community and the free exchange of ideas.

I’m really happy to be a part of it.” - Anna Quindlen (Panelist) -

“Last night was superb...the best Forum that I have ever attended. The panelists were intelligent and gracious and the moderator was 'on task'. The Youth Forum representative was clear and articulate...I'm not sure it gets any better than A Meaningful Life.”

- Nancy Z. (Board of Directors Member & Donor) on A Meaningful Life -

“I am still in awe that I was in the presence of these amazing women. Makes me want to get out and DO something! And you know what? I think I will. I’ve got a daughter who is going

to need a torch someday. May hers burn bright”- Kriste S. (blogger) on The State of Women 2012 -
