TEAM HOPE is an Irish, interdenominational Christian develop-
ment aid charity, working with children, their families, and communities in Eastern Eu-
rope, former Soviet Union and Africa (Irish charity number CHY 14524).
Best known for our annual Christmas Shoebox Appeal, we also help children all year
round (many in families surviving on less than €1 a day) through a variety of community
development projects.
Who
We work with anyone, irrespective of race, religion, ethnicity or background. Believing
that in God's eyes, everyone in need is equally deserving of receiving help. We will not
make distinctions on any other criteria apart from need.
We work together in co-operation with the people of Ireland, and with our overseas
partners to make this happen.
How
Team Hope adopts an approach to Development Aid called Asset Based Community
Development. This philosophy makes use of the resources a community has, their
skills, money and people, together with the money we can give, to create a project that
is sustainable. This means that when outside funding ends the project can continue.

Where we work
We all have a story…
These girls came to Romania from Iraq and are now living in a refugee centre.
They loved getting make-up & earrings in their
shoeboxes! All of them were delighted with the
sweets, the school supplies and the other little
surprises, it reminded them that they weren’t alone
in the world.
Ali, a 10 year old boy from Congo, also lives at the
centre. He was freezing and said that he missed the
warm sunshine in Africa!
He had many scars, but Ali spoke 5 languages
fluently! He was able to translate for the girls from
Iraq. He loved the toy cars in his shoebox.
The future is uncertain for them, but there was
one thing for sure, as all their troubles were put
behind them for a little while, they were allowed to
be children full of excitement as they received presents from someone far away in
Ireland.
Eastern Europe
Moldova We help to educate girls who are at risk of being trafficked and work with young women
who have been rescued to re-establish themselves back into society.
Romania Providing HIV/AIDS care, and care for street children and orphans in Western Romania.
Also running social care programmes for the most needy & elderly.
Transnistria Enabling a local church to address some of the needs of their community.
Armenia Working with refugees and the children in the major cities.
Ukraine Bringing practical care to street children in Odessa, and helping families in the
surrounding villages.
Albania Supporting and helping orphans and children through local organisations.
Where we work
A World in Need
In groups of 4 discuss:
a) Which of the above needs do you see as most important?
b) Why?
c) What makes one need more important than another?
d) Why do some people have what they need and others don’t?
e) EDUCATION: Where do you think education fits?
f) Why is education important?
CSPE.TV:
Where a person is born in the world has a major affect on issues such as what
access to education and healthcare they will have, how much they will have to
eat and even how long they will live. We can see this clearly by looking at the
life expectancy people have in different countries.
We can see that people in the developed world (North America, Europe and
parts of Asia) live much longer than people in the developing world (Africa,
South America and South Asia). One reason for this is because the wealth of the
world is very unevenly divided. Many people in the developing world do not
even have enough money for food and cannot afford basic healthcare or educa-
tion.

Worth a watch…
If you earn the minimum wage in Ireland,
you are among the richest 5.8% of
people in the world.
You are richer than 94.2% of the
world’s population.
Discussion continued...
a) FOOD: Why isn’t there enough food for everyone? Why can’t everyone
grow their own food?
b) Where does our food come from? Look in your fridge/ cupboards and list
3 surprising countries that your food is imported from.
c) WATER: Check out teamhope.ie and learn what a Bio Sand Filter is. How
does it work?
d) INCOME: Should we provide for those in need or help them to provide for
themselves? When are each of these appropriate? (Check out our work in
Swaziland)
Supply clean water
Provide healthcare
Care for those with HIV/AIDS
Provide education
Helping trafficking victims
Generate income for those living in poverty
Look after widows and orphans
Help communities in need
Our response:
A World in Need
Through our Christmas Shoebox Appeal we
recognised many struggles faced by the
communities we visited. With this knowledge,
we have been able to work with our partners
to help in the most needed ways in each
country.

Until Florence (who lives in rural
Kenya) got a TEAM HOPE Bio-sand
water filter supplying clean water
in her home, her family always had
stomach problems. Sadly, her husband also
passed away at a very young age from water-
borne disease.
Now, it’s no more dirty water, illness or hospital
visits. She told us “Now I’m healthy and my
children can go to school … Thank you TEAM
HOPE for making this possible”
We all have a story…
Martha (not her real name) in Moldova didn’t have money to feed her
children, and a family friend offered to help her get a good job working
as a seamstress in Ukraine. When Martha arrived her documents were
taken and her ‘friend’ sold her into the prostitution business in
Turkey. She had become another victim of Sex Trafficking. For 18 months she was kept
with other girls in a basement. She was brutally
beaten and raped, day & night.
When police raided the house, Martha was freed and
made her way home. TEAM HOPE’s partners in
Moldova are providing food for the family, and
helping Martha to get an education and a job.
Our partners work in schools to educate teenage
girls about the dangers of such offers. They give
them resources to find out if jobs are legitimate and
help them to make good decisions for their futures.
YOUR ACTION PROJECT should reflect something that you and your class feel passionately about.
Step 1: In groups of four, brainstorm some things that you really care about. You
can use words, issues or topics from the news, your own lives or use some of ours…
Shortlist the words that come up again and again in your class:
Now you can see more clearly what direction you want to take for your action project!
Step 2: Having looked at www.teamhope.ie, pick a project to work on. We will
support you all the way!
Idea A: Christmas Shoebox Appeal
Idea B: Providing clear drinking water in Kenya
Idea C: Supporting orphans in Lesotho
Idea D: Providing schools packs so that children in Malawi can continue their education
Write your project name and a brief plan, this will help you to keep on track during the
project. Make note of your goal and the steps you will take to reach it.

“The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something. Don’t
wait for good things to happen to you. If you go out and make some good
things happen, you will fill the world with hope, you will fill yourself with
hope.” ― Barack Obama

www.teamhope.ie) to make sure you have resources.
Use unique talents Every school has individuals with unique skills & resources. Consider how to get them
involved as well. Here are some ideas:
Social Media: I’m sure you have people who love social media and would get involved
in sharing what you’re doing and encouraging others to get involved.
Event Coordinator: Fundraise for products to make boxes with. Throw a party, a
non-uniform day, a sports match…
Networking: Do you have someone who would represent your team with local
businesses and ask for sponsorship or a donation of products?
Graphic design/ Art: Get your artists to design posters/ media to share to
encourage everyone to make a shoebox.
Speaker: charisma and charm are two words to describe this person. Design a
PowerPoint or Emaze to show the other classes in your school and tell them about the
Christmas Shoebox Appeal
What
Pack shoeboxes individually?
Collect items and put boxes together at school?
Run a special event to raise money to buy the items
instead of people bringing them?
Think outside the box!
How
How many shoeboxes will you collect?
Set a target!
How will you spread the word?
Do you need to raise any funds?
How often will you meet to make sure
you are on track?
Where
Do you have access to a classroom to
hold meetings?
Where will you collect packed
shoeboxes?
Where can you host events?
Could you contact feeder national
schools?
The Map In order to develop strategies, you need to make some
decisions collectively before you split into teams.
When
November 10th is the deadline to get all of
your shoeboxes to the checking centre.
When are you going to have students finish
packing?
Before mid-term?
When should events & promos be held
How
When
What
Where
Write your strategy
The Strategy Team have the foresight to keep their eyes on the final goal while being
practical and organized to make sure each team is pulling their weight to make the
dream a reality.
Set a Goal What’s the target?
Make a decision and get all the other teams on board so that you are working together to achieve this!
Marketing Team
Work with the Marketing Team as there are SO many creative ways to spread the word about Team
Hope’s Christmas Shoebox Appeal:
Social media: spread the word and run innovative campaigns.
Set up a presentation team and give them the stories, photos, DVDs, and posters to speak to every
class on how students can get involved.
Run an event like a concert or sports day to raise awareness and to raise funds
Think outside the box and organize a Fun-Day Festival or Break a Guinness World Record!
For a full list look at www.teamhope.ie/involved-school
Finance Team
Work with the Finance Team to make sure you have enough funds for promotion and marketing.
Maybe consider running a fundraiser to pay the €4 fee for each shoebox?
Maybe consider selling wrapped shoeboxes (don’t forget to wrap the lid and box separately!) and use
the funds raised to buy extra fillers for shoeboxes?
Logistics Team
Work with the Logistics Team to make sure you have enough shoeboxes, have sourced budget (or FREE)
products for shoeboxes and have enough volunteers on board!
Strategy TEAM
There is an entire class, school, community, town, city, COUNTRY out there that
would like to hear from you! Here are things to consider when making your strategy:
What?
Time to get creative hats on and figure out how to brand and market your Shoebox Appeal:
Social Media: What platforms will your campaign cover? How?
Design your own posters, articles, and advertisements but make sure to include:
Title: Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal
Final date for collection
Link to website: www.teamhope.ie
Contact person for any questions
Lots of photos and graphics!
Ensure you also have instructional posters on HOW to fill a shoebox to either promote around
the school or to send with your presentation teams.
Will you have a presentation team? Run an event (like a party? Concert? Sports day?) to raise
awareness and get students interested? Check out www.teamhope.ie/involved-school for more
creative marketing ideas!
Where?
Where can you advertise?
Notice boards, windows, newspapers, ONLINE, in classes, in cafeteria…
When?
Come up with a marketing timeline that includes what goes up when.
Resources
The Team Hope office has leaflets (that go with every box), posters (A4 and A3), DVDs and other
things we can provide to help you. Contact us at (01) 2940222 or [email protected]
Marketing TEAM
Your team might needs funds for some or all of the
following: Buying items to make up shoeboxes
Buy fillers for shoeboxes that could use a little more stuff in them.
Pay for, or subsidize, the €4 that needs to go into each shoebox.
Team Hope is an Irish charity involved ALL year around in amazing projects in these countries so
check out The Christmas Catalogue on our website and explore ways your school can donate
towards water, hygiene, school supplies, nutrition and so much more in the neediest countries.
Ideas for sourcing this money: Running a fundraiser (with strategy and marketing teams)
Organize a concert and charge at the door.
Sell donated baked goods
Ask a sports team to play a charity tournament and donate fund towards the Christmas
Shoebox Appeal.
Break a Guinness World Record – finds something the school loves to do and find a way to do it
better than ANYONE has ever done it before! Get friends and family to sponsor you for doing
so.
Be organized Get on Excel and keep track of costs, revenues and profits so that you are on top of things financially.
Finance TEAM
Team members, volunteers, partners, collection centres, warehouses, shoeboxes…it can get a little bit
manic which is why your team is vital in keeping things moving effortlessly!
The Basics
Get in touch with Team Hope for resources (leaflets, posters, DVD, and so much more) and agreeing on
how shoeboxes will get from your school to our warehouses.
You will need 1 leaflet per shoebox
Keep the entire team, volunteers, and staff motivated to work towards the goal!
Collection Centre
Find a large enough place in your school that is covered, secured, and dry (an empty classroom? Corner
of the gym?)
Volunteers
Ensure you have enough hands on deck to help the Marketing Team in promoting (presenting, putting posters up, etc) and the Strategy/Finance Team in running special events. When the shoeboxes roll in you’ll need people to help collect, stack, and load! Sign them up now.
Partners
Speak to the local Euro/convenience shops to see if they’ll donate towards the Christmas Shoebox Appeal. Get down to the local retail shops for wholesale practices or donations for fillers for shoeboxes. Call local businesses to see if they’ll sponsor your team’s Shoebox Appeal.
Go the Extra Mile
Contact a shoe store and ask if you can collect empty shoeboxes from them. Wrap them (lid and box separately) and give them to students who can’t find a shoebox! Send your teams to primary and national schools and offer to present to their students, as well as collect their shoeboxes!
Logistics TEAM
We all have a story…
These 2 little boys in Kosovo stood in the
freezing cold with probably the first gifts they
had ever received.
The older brother excitedly pulled back
his #shoebox lid and on top were two packets of
sweets.
Tucked in the corner was a little car. Without
hesitating, he gave the car to his little brother.
Then he found a comb, and he gave that to his
Mum. What generosity!
Sizwe said. “I call this my surprise gift as it was
a big surprise for me and I got it from special
people. Team Hope has showed me love with
their gift and how important I am. This special
gift encouraged me to continue working hard…
…I just liked the fact that they were more
things that boosted me in my school work so to
reach my goal. This has really encouraged me to
get good results.
Everyone was shouting with joy in class “look,
look what I got” Sizwe also showed his friends what he had got from his gift box.
The class especially loved the toothbrush and toothpaste as many had never owned these
before.

This week:
Final Tips Organize weekly meetings to have time to work on this and check on each other.
Check the final deadline with our office. This will be in MID NOVEMBER!
Set clear Action Points (things each person needs to do) after every meeting and
set a clear Due Date for each of those.
Involve everybody! Find out what people are good at and find a way to get them
to use that towards this project.
Final Word We, Team Hope, sincerely hope that this project is both fun and educational. We
intentionally wanted to shift responsibility from parent and/or teacher to YOU so that
when you write your CV, look for work experience, or need a recommendation letter for
college/work, you can point to your work with this project.
Go all out and push yourself so that you can look back and be proud
of what you did. What you do locally as part of your team has a
HUGE impact in the lives of those who receive these
shoeboxes. So…thank you!
