Dear Music Lovers
What is there about music that is so fundamental to us? We celebrate our lives with music from birth to death and everywhere in between. Music says things we can’t put in to words; it inspires our imagination.
The CSO, our government and corporate partners, our donors, benefactors and patrons share a love not just for music, but also for what music brings to our community.
Attending a CSO concert is sharing and contributing to the excitement that can only be possible at a live music performance. This experience brings us together and enriches our lives.
And why is this important? Because however impressive our technological achievements in the modern world, we have a fundamental need for simple human connection. We need some things to be real and face-to-face. No matter how fantastic your stereo system, there’s nothing like being in the concert hall with 80 musicians right there in front of you and the music resounding in your solar plexus!
If you think CSO concerts are boring, you haven’t been to one lately! Come and discover what others are raving about as our audience numbers continue to grow in response to the exhilarating performances of our Conductors, Soloists and Musicians. Under our inspiring Chief Conductor and Artistic Director, Nicholas Milton, your CSO brings fresh, dynamic and memorable artistry to the stage throughout the year. With the generous support of the ACT and Commonwealth Governments, as well as our many dedicated corporate partners, we are growing and engaging with our community like never before.
On behalf of us all, I would like to welcome you to the Canberra Symphony Orchestra’s 2012 concert season. Nicholas Milton has devised an inspirational program for you which brings the excitement, passion, beauty and spine-tingling thrills you’ve come to expect from your CSO. Imagine the possibilities!

Dear Friends
It gives me enormous pleasure to welcome you to another season of thrilling music-making with your Canberra Symphony Orchestra. All of you who were with us for our spectacular concerts over the past few years know exactly what I am talking about when I refer to the inspiring, fascinating, and thrilling experiences we have shared together.
It really is a privilege and an extraordinary pleasure for me personally to make music with the
remarkable musicians of the Canberra Symphony Orchestra. I want to thank all of our musicians, from the bottom of my heart, for their exceptional concentration and energy during the often intense and exhausting rehearsal periods that culminate in the wonderfully uplifting concerts we are proud to share with you, our passionate and supportive audience. May I also take this opportunity to express my thanks to our small management team, whose tireless work behind the scenes makes possible the undisputed success of our orchestra. My personal and deep thanks to our incredible Chief Executive, Henry Laska, who is the most passionate advocate for our orchestra and whose dedication makes my job significantly more enjoyable. Henry encourages all of us and leads a truly inspirational and motivated team—a family, really, that you are invited to join for another extraordinary year in 2012.
This brochure offers you a glimpse into what I promise will be a treasure trove of exquisite riches for our imagination. As always, the CSO musicians and I have invited exciting guest artists to join us to interpret for you some of the most glowing masterpieces of the literature. With each program, we will experience a tremendous excursion into the resplendence of human emotion. Music is food for our souls, and each of the concerts you share in 2012 with us will be a feast of perfect proportions.
I think that orchestras are quite miraculous organisms—humans getting together to try to make something absolutely stunningly beautiful happen at a particular moment in time. It’s quite remarkable when you think about it, and I often contemplate this tiny miracle that happens when I am privileged enough to stand in front of fellow musicians. I am increasingly and passionately convinced that the CSO is not only a unique and extraordinary organisation, but a quiet miracle-worker for good in our city.
Thank you for sharing our passion for exquisite music in 2012. Together we inspire and nourish the essential imagination in our lives.
Warmest regards
Nicholas Milton

The 30th annual Prom takes on a carnival atmosphere in our 2012 performance as we join with the Embassy of Italy for the ‘Carnevale di Canberra’! Featuring orchestral blockbusters inspired by the festivity of the richly exciting Carnevale tradition, we feature Dvorak’s rousing
‘Carnival Overture’, the ‘Barber of Seville Overture’ by Rossini, and selections from Vivaldi’s ‘Four Seasons’ performed by CSO Concertmaster, Barbara Jane Gilby while our guest vocalists thrill with love duets from ‘La Boheme’. What Italian feast would be complete without the ‘Triumphal March’ from Verdi’s ‘Aida’, or a spine-tingling rendition of ‘Nessun Dorma’?

================Chief Conductor and Artistic Director Nicholas Milton opens our 2012 Llewellyn Season with a powerful selection of masterpieces. We begin with the drama of Beethoven’s ‘Egmont Overture’ with its stunning power and ferocious heroism, before Australia’s foremost Beethoven interpreter, Gerard Willems,
brings his virtuosity to the intense sound world of the 3rd Piano Concerto. After interval, Tchaikovsky’s emotionally charged Sixth Symphony, which debuted just days before his sudden death, is a deep and turbulent masterpiece to conclude a memorable concert experience.================

“Beethoven’s Third is the turning point
in Beethoven’s concerto writing where
the soloist is the real protagonist against
the orchestra. He turns away from the
Mozartian style of concertante writing
and the orchestration is very flamboyant.
It also reflects the political tension in the
air when Napoleon was about to invade
Vienna.” Gerard Willems

“The Strauss concerto is a
special work for oboists and
really the pinnacle of our
solo repertoire. It asks for
such depth of expression and
technical mastery that make
it the type of work that you
can spend your entire life
discovering.” Shefali Pryor
================Llewellyn 2 is an evening of refined elegance with Guest Conductor Andrew Mogrelia making a welcome return to the CSO stage. Associate Principal Oboe of the Sydney Symphony and winner of the Symphony Australia Young Performer Awards, Shefali Prior showcases the intimate and beautiful ‘Oboe Concerto’ by Richard Strauss,
a gorgeously lyrical work that makes great virtuosic demands on the soloist. George Palmer’s intoxicating dances for orchestra overflow with energy and melodic appeal before the program’s joyful conclusion with Beethoven’s triumphant First Symphony. ================

=====In 2012, we present a very special Gala event—An Evening with George Gershwin. Effervescent pianist Piers Lane joins us for a bewitching rendition of ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ and Canberra-favourite, Trisha Crowe sings some of the most beloved show tunes penned
by George and Ira Gershwin, including ‘Stairway To Paradise’, ‘S Wonderful’ and ‘Summertime’. Nicholas Milton and the CSO add a saxophone section and go into big-band mode to perform the extraordinary ‘American in Paris’, Gershwin’s ever-popular portrayal of the city of love. Another sold-out

“Mozart’s glorious double
concerto is always a real treat
to play. Mozart played both
the violin and viola himself
and he understood perfectly
how to write for them. In the
sublime slow movement the
two instruments sing together
in a heavenly duet that is
simply out of this world”
Roger Benedict
========In Llewellyn 3 Chief Conductor and Artistic Director Nicholas Milton returns for a massive concert of astrological proportions. Acclaimed soloist William Barton opens the evening as the didgeridoo and orchestra blend with soaring lyricism in Sculthorpe’s moving
‘Earth Cry’ while the second act journeys across ‘The Planets’, Gustav Holst’s mighty showpiece. These two musical spheres orbit around the centerpiece of the evening, Mozart’s brilliant ‘Double Concerto for Violin and Viola’ featuring the heavenly talents of Ji Won Kim and Roger Benedict.========

In this final Llewellyn blockbuster for 2012 we open with Berlioz’s dazzling ‘Roman Carnival’ before being joined by one of Australia’s most scintillating artists, cellist Julian Smiles. His interpretation of the remarkable ‘First Concerto’ by Shostakovich is a performance of emotional focus and searing intensity.
The evening concludes with the beloved ‘Organ Symphony’ by Saint-Saëns. This is a magnificent work like no other—with astonishing melodic turns, delicate colours, and above all, a design and architecture of immense grandeur.

“This is one of my favourite cello concertos. It starts with menacing power and ends in a manic fury, but it is in the beauty and sadness of the second movement that the work has its heart. It also has one of the longest and most exciting cadenzas in the repertoire!” Julian Smiles

The CSO’s Music Education Program, Noteworthy, has inspired over 25,000 young Canberrans since its inception in 2007. This has been possible due to the vision and support of the Macquarie Group Foundation who share our commitment to nurture the future of music with free, interactive music-education concerts for ACT school children.
Beginning in 2012, the ACT Government is also supporting Noteworthy so that we may enhance and develop the educational needs of our young people. Concerts are devised for specific age groups with everything from “clap along” rhythm concepts in Noteworthy Kinder to on-stage workshops with senior music students playing alongside our professional musicians. This support gives us the opportunity to further develop Noteworthy Outreach which takes our musicians to schools in our community for students with disabilities.
Noteworthy concerts are open to students in all ACT Government, Catholic and Independent Schools. The CSO thanks the Macquarie Group Foundation and the ACT Government for their inspirational commitment to young people and music in our community.

CSO in the community
Play your part in the Canberra Symphony Orchestra! Annual Giving and Planned Giving are directly responsible for supporting and strengthening your orchestra’s artistic achievement, now and in the future. More musicians, more rehearsals, more music—the full and glorious symphonic experience you love with the CSO needs your support to make it possible.
CSO Annual Giving Program
Donations are gratefully appreciated and all contributions over $2 are tax deductible. Each donor becomes a member of our Giving Program with those pledging over $100 receiving acknowledgement in our concert programmes.
To play your part, please direct enquiries to Isobel Griffin—Philanthropy & Giving Manager on 6247 9191 or you can give online at www.cso.org.au
Chair SponsorshipsA lifetime commitment is required by musicians who dedicate their lives to the performance of classical music at this level. The pursuit of perfection in performance requires unbelievable emotional fortitude, physical stamina, and tremendous innate talent.
We invite you to chat with us about supporting those efforts through a Chair Sponsorship. Join a musician on their journey to excellence, sit with them during a rehearsal, chat about the music or instrument you truly love and deeply enhance your symphonic experience.
CSO Planned Giving
Will Power! To help ensure the future of one of Australia’s finest orchestras, consider making a Bequest to the Canberra Symphony Orchestra. Planned Giving means contributing to the CSO, while gaining access to financial benefits for yourself or for your estate. This provides creative and tax-friendly ways to support the CSO in today’s challenging economic environment.
Donations through Planned Giving are secured in our Legacy Fund which preserves your donation while using the interest earned to support the CSO’s future projects. Therefore your contribution ‘lives on forever’ providing funds for such projects as the Emerging Artist Fund, the commissioning of new Australian works, education and community outreach programs.
Your financial advisor or solicitor can help you choose the option that works best for you to ensure you share your love of music and to inspire others—now and in the future.
Together we are creating the orchestra our city deserves.
HeartStringsA program of social inclusionFor those who may be socially or geographically disadvantaged, the CSO can provide life-changing inspiration, a chance to experience beauty and possibilities that might otherwise elude them.
HeartStrings is an exciting new program which shares the generosity of community-minded donors by providing concert tickets to our young and not so young, and giving them the chance to experience the magic and wonder of a live orchestral experience. This represents a unique opportunity to help educate, entertain and inspire.
We invite you talk to us about how you can support the HeartStrings project.
Please direct enquiries to Isobel Griffin Philanthropy & Giving Manager on 6247 9191
